    Anemia! Surgery soon. Worried.

I was told to take and otc high dosage iron 3x a day when they did my labs. I was still able to have surgery w/o an issue. At almost 7 months out my iron is now normal and I was told to only take 2 a day.

    Quest bars!

Just found these delicious gems! They have a lot of Protein and not a lot of sugar! On another side note: being 5 weeks out I've stopped checking the scale daily! I've stalled and checking everyday was getting frustrating and depressing. I'm focusing on protein and fluids! Anybody have some favorite Quest bar favorites? I'm interested in trying more varieties.
  4. I actually have this problem right now too, however it isn't too bad. My gym has a manual scale that generally gets it almost right. My job has a machine that is about 4 lbs more every time from my scale at home (which weighs me 4 lbs less). I didn't know which to trust but I do think my home scale is off while my job scale is right. So right now my home scale says 219 but at work it said 223. Which goes down or up depending on Water and food intake. But since its so close I don't worry about it too much. Not much you can do about it really. I'm learning to sort of step away from the scale because I've become quite obsessive about it. Instead of focusing on whats important...like how I feel and how I'm doing mentally.

    Menstruation after Sleeve?

After surgery mine became very heavy. My surgeon warned me of this and while I always had cramps so I keep Tylenol with me even though I was cleared for midol. (I was told that taking it for a couple days a month won't hurt my sleeve but didn't want to take any chances)

"You'd be much prettier if you lost weight"

Before I switched weight loss clinics (I went to two before considering surgery) the doctor complimented me on my loss so far and then said, "Don't you want to find a husband?" and "Don't you want to wear small clothes?" and my personal favorite: "You will die with all that extra weight on your bones! You will DIE!" ...Needless to say, that was my last appointment. (This clinic gave you a strict meal plan, no exceptions) The second clinic was amazing! They were supportive, they were into switching out things for healthy alternatives(So I didn't feel deprived! They emphasized moderation NOT deprivation), and adding exercise of course. In the end, I gained a lot of what I lost back and thats when I decided wls was right for me.

    Female Issue, been warned

I asked my surgeon this because I thought as the weight came off my period would be lighter but she flat out told me it may get heavier. I was hoping it wouldn't. (Because who wants that...) But alas, It did get heavier. I went from regular and occasionally super pads with regular tampons pre op to overnights with super plus tampons post op. My surgeon also said it could become irregular but so far its only been 2-3 days late one month and then 2-3 early the next month. Nothing to crazy. I started at 270 (Day of surgery) but remember all of our bodies are different. You may be one of the lucky ones!
  8. I know how you feel! If I eat something bad or something that doesn't agree with me my stomach gets extremely loud! Looking back I realize the bypass would have been better for me because I have to really re-learn self control with the sleeve. Self control I thought I had! Just take it one day at a time. I have bad days where I graze and then bad water days where I barely get in a liter but I try to look at all of my good days and remember how creating many more good days wills help me get healthy. Right now focus on creating good habits and keep in mind slip ups may happen. We are not perfect. It'll be okay. I really sat down and took a look at my problem with food and why I felt like I have to compulsively eat/binge. Its easier said than done but it takes practice.
  9. I backed out out of fear in June 2014 and lost 50 pounds. The weight began to creep back on and at 270 o felt this is something that would help me not only lose the weight but keep it off.

    25 year old seeking advice!

I also didn't go to the doc because I had no insurance but I had tried two different times with a weigh loss clinic. You might have to do a six month diet to show you are motivated to try losing weight. I had BCBS of IL and I was approved at 270 with no comorbities and I'm 22.

    What I miss most

While I don't miss prunes I had them along with prune juice about a month after surgery to help with constipation.

    Mental

Believe it or not but cassey ho has a recipe for key lime pie with AVOCADOS! It tastes really good too! I modified it though to one avocado, three limes and a couple of packets of stevia. The crust was made with dates and walnuts! She also had a recipe for ice cream that was just Peanut Butter and bananas! So good! Her segment on YouTube and her blog is called blogilates. She also had awesome workout vids.
  13. Since I've lost I've found that I will confidently wear fitted clothes and have noticed more attention that I still don't know how to handle. When I was 300+ I was getting some attention but now at almost 220s it is becoming more frequent. It's overwhelming but my resting b*txhface game is pretty strong! (I commute to school) and I'm really good at ignoring it...plus wearing headphones helps in ignoring. At least for the moment.
  14. I literally only take it as a last resort. In fact I've done enemas before reaching for the milk of magnesia! While I don't like enemas I will happily take one over milk of magnesia any day.

    Movie time

10 days out is probably not a good idea. I've had some now and my sleeve doesn't really like it too much so I only eat a little every now and again. (I'm almost 3 months out) My taste buds have changed though so I like popcorn with nothing on it because anything else tastes too salty. Careful though, popcorn is a slider food and I've found I can eat a lot of it if I don't implement some self control. I haven't cut it out but I don't keep in the house so I can avoid excessive snacking.

    Women Only!

My doc actually told me that after surgery my period would get heavier. My period was heavy before but the first month out was crazy. My last period(I've had two since surgery) was back to normal. Not overnight heavy but my normal heavy. They said my body is adjusting to changes so my period may change as a result.

    What are your food stages?

Mine was completely different! (Which felt odd at the time! I wondered if my surgeon was crazy) Day 1(Day of surgery): Nothing by mouth Day 2: Clear Liquids Day 3: Full liquids & Soup Discharged from hospital on Day 3. Day 4 (At home): pureed food. Day 30(1-Month Follow Up): Solids.

    Young Gastric Sleeve Patients

I'm 22!!! Congrats on your upcoming surgery! My starting weight before surgery was 307, but my weight on the day of surgery was 270! First and foremost, GAS X, walking, and if you're in pain let them know! Also Water is the most important thing to get into your body post op! Seriously, dehydration is not fun. Its just as important as reaching your Protein goals. (You will work up to 64 ounces a day of water and meeting your protein goals). I told my immediate family about the procedure and while I will eventually tell my bff she has a habit of not being able to hold water. *If you catch my meaning* I'm not quite ready for the world to know all my business. Surgery was pretty straightforward. It felt like I had a really rough day of ab work at the gym, lol. The first month was the hardest for me though. (After discharge my diet was pureed food) It was hard and tedious but doable. Second, the young adult college life thing...as of right now, not much has changed. At least not that I've noticed. Of course people who see me regularly noticed but to strangers I'm just some woman. Though I did have a guy say hi to me and was interested in talking when I was going into the gym but I completely blew him off because I didn't realize he was talking to me! (Epic fail! He was cute too) That was definitely a first for me. I never had someone close to my age actually try to approach me. I'm used to old pervy men. Of course I'm still early post op so this could change but for right now its pretty much the same as before surgery except I'm healthier, happier, and stronger.
  19. Is this a thing? Can you be re-sleeved? I'm just curious...I thought you can only go from being sleeved to a bypass...

    Out of pocket cost

When I didn't have insurance I was quoted a "discounted" price of $13,000 for self pay without financing at the hospital I was looking at and $17,000 with financing. Other hospitals in my area quoted me: $22,000(With their finance options and another $10,000(If I traveled 2 hours away and had the money up front as a cash paying patient)

    ADJUSTING TO EATING....

It takes a while to adjust because you basically have to relearn how to eat, lol! Drinking as per my surgeon: stop drinking 30 mins before and don't start until 30 mins after. (Every surgeon is different however) It doesn't bother me at all! Even if I eat spicy food which I love. I was told I was allowed a sip of Water if I REALLY need it but nothing to crazy or it will cause me to flush all the food out faster. It's just something you eventually get used to. I had to learn my "full" signals too like when to stop eating (Still learning!) so that I don't get uncomfortable or have to vomit. Right now, I am trying to really stop my habit of trying to guzzle water! It really hurts, like I swallowed a bowling ball. I think that is the one real thing I miss now! I find it annoying to sip all day but I'll be damned if I am going to be readmitted for dehydration. Good luck to you!

    Preop diet

I also had no preop diet but was told no eating after midnight the night before. After discharge I was put on pureed food. I was freaking out (because not many surgeons do pureed right after discharge and no preop diet. There are a few however.) I was immediately being put on pureed and was even mildly scolded during a follow up call for having Soup, I was told to make sure I get back to pureed at my next meal. I'm two months out now and perfectly fine. I've learned that every surgeon is different for sure however.

    Couch to 5k

@@jenn1 I have the app and when I did use it I loved it! You can listen to your own music while it prompts you. I gave up before week 2 because of pain(I tried it before I even considered surgery) but I plan on starting again soon, once I build up some stamina and endurance.
  24. My NUT actually gave me this! I was going to do it but I no longer have any insurance. It would have cost me $25!

    a little annoyed...

Being pushy gets the job done! I was assertive with my insurance company and my surgeon and his staff seemed pretty confident that I was going to get approved and he told me surgery would most likely be after the holidays. (I had my first appt Dec 1, 2014). He was right. I had surgery Jan 16, 2015. From being pushy and asking constantly what I needed to get done, what paperwork, scheduling my psych eval, hell, my surgeons office even gives everyone a check list.
