Both ways of losing weight are hard but what these people dont understand is that less than 5 percent of morbidly obese individuals succeed in losing a significant amount of weight and maintaining the weight loss with non-surgical programs.
That's the difference between your family member or friend who did it by exercise & diet only they probably weren't morbidly obese. If they are morbidly obese lets keep an eye to see if they yo-yo.
This is hard in a different way and truely a life change that can't be undone.

HawaiianTexan got a reaction from My Bariatric Life in Divorce after plastic surgery and/or bariatric surgery
Problems in my relationship was the finally straw that convinced me that I needed a whole life change and so I made an appointment to see a surgeon. (Bariatric surgery is something I wanted to do since 2010.)
Anyhow we aren't 100% broken up at the moment but I don't know what that future holds.
Im curious are people getting divorced because they are prettier so they attract some new prospects? Or because a bad/mean/jealous/unsupportive spouse...

Only one person said that to me, Ive never updated that person on my status. My family has been supportive I think they all know someone that's had a lot of success with bariatric so they were on board immediately saying "how can I help". I never really spoke to my older brothers about it but I think we give each other enough respect to live our lives the way we see fit.

@@scootie my 36 hours I was a mess too. My pain was only a 4, but my nausea was an 8. I couldn't stay up for more than 5 mins I made myself keep going back to sleep because being up sucked. Then boom I finally woke up feeling 100xs better my surgeon said all the anesthesia finally cleared my system. I started taking walks alone and so on. I barely requested pain meds from the nurse that night. Anyhow yes it totally gets better!

I think it comes down to a matter of self care. I have always had a good sense of self. I just have never allowed anyone to make me feel bad or ashamed of who I am. Except for after facial shingles scarred my face I have never not felt beautiful. I've always liked myself and be good at setting up boundaries. I have a large multi-generational family that I love and respect.
I am a firm believer that we teach people how they can treat us. Anytime we quietly seethe or hold in out feelings we only hurt ourselves. I like myself too much to do that. You have to find the way to say "that's not okay". It can be done without having a hissy fit. Whether it's deflection, laughter, changing the subject, you need to find the words and use them.
My mother remains my biggest challenge. Despite many conversations with her about lifestyle changes she only hears "diet" and "weight loss". This has gone back to when I started eating clean and exercising regularly 2 years before my WLS. Since she doesn't get it, I'm not going to put myself in a position to get upset at her or try and hurt my feeling. I simply said, " I do not want to discuss my weight with you." It wasn't said in a mean manner. It was just stated as a simple fact. Post WLS I've had to remind her of this twice. Both times it was "How's the diet coming, have you lost any weight?" I gently remind her that we don't discuss my weight and moved on. There are a thousand things to discuss and share with my family. I'm not going to let one topic ruin those.
    Self care is important.
