  1. I take 40 mg of Nexium and 20 mg of Prilosec each morning and then 20 mg Prilosec before bed. I also keep Rolaid chews, Tums and Gas-X with me all the time. I get acid in my throat/nose every night I sleep in a recliner at 45 degrees. I've asked about this at my support group and I was told it could last up to 6 months post op, but will eventually stop. I'm finally getting regular, but I've used the vegetable stool softeners/laxative since surgery out of necessity. Hopefully I'm past that stage. You're not alone. These are just a couple of the complications that you hear about before surgery but can't truly appreciate until you have them. Good luck.
  2. I used Slim Fast High Protein premade shakes (180 calories/20 grams protein). They only come in milk chocolate from what I could find. But they do have a sugar-substitute after taste. I now drink Speciak K protein drinks. They don't meet the high protein criteria (190 calories, 10 grams protein), but they are very tasty and come in multiple flavors. I use them for snacks and the 10 grams protein definitely supplements my food consumption.
  3. Retail Goodwill stores. I've started buying my blue jeans there ($5.99 in Florida). I've gone down two sizes in 10 weeks and refuse to buy new clothes until I stabilize. I've also pulled out my sewing machine and figured out how to take in my dress slacks etc. I did have to buy new bras and underwear. Amazing how 39 lbs can change your sizes. But its all good. Try the Goodwill or consignment stores. Good luck on your weight loss journey.

    Last minute BIG DOUBTS

My husband and sons did not support my having surgery, but I did tons of research and I knew it was my only hope for long term weight loss and better health! I knew how to lose weight, I didn't know how to keep it off. Take care of yourself and trust your gut!
  5. I'm 57 and lived my pre-op life feeling constantly hot. My sleeve surgery was Nov. 12, 2014 and now I spend all my days trying to stay warm. And......I live in Florida. I now wear socks, Under Armour and never sit down without a fleece blanket around me. I've looked on the internet and the best answer is the loss of the fat layer directly below the skin surface that used to act as insulation. I'm down 39 lbs since surgery and I know it's all in my feet and that fat layer!
  6. mae7365 I went to my first post op bariatric support group last night and found my surgery sole mate. We had surgery one day apart, 4 weeks ago tomorrow. I was happy to hear that I am not alone with my less than perfect post op recovery. I spent two days hospitalized last week for severe nause, vomiting, dehydration and dangerously low potassium levels. I'm still struggling with food and vomiting, but at least I know what to look for to make sure I don't get that sick again. The dietician assured me I'd feel much better by next months meeting. I look forward to it since I've felt pretty crappy the past couple weeks. I guess I wasn't prepared for the learning curve associated with eating following surgery.

  7. I'm almost 2 weeks post-op and I'm actually afraid I'm losing too much weight. 20 lbs since day of surgery 11/12/14. But I've also been sick with a terrible cold/flu and getting OTC medicines down my very sore throat has been a struggle. I see my surgeon on Tuesday and I plan to ask him what he wants my weight loss goal to be. I used the top of the recommended for my height. I'm confident I will loss the weight, I just want to remain healthy in the process.

    Who Are You?

I'm a 57 yr old retired hospital executive. I never planned to retire so early, but now my husband of 35 years is being offered early retirement in January 2015. Wow, never expected that! We are both now talking about what kind of part time jobs we want to get just to get out of the house and apart from each other! I have three wonderful children. Oldest son is 30, married to the best daughter in law, and they live in Southern California. My 27 yr old son lives in Jacksonville, FL (that's where I live), works full time and is a part time student at University of North Florida. My daughter will be 20 yrs old this coming Friday and she's a sophomore at FSU. She is my best friend, confidante and just about the only person who can make me laugh until I cry. I love to teach at the university level and may go back to being an adjunct professor sometime next year. MY PART-TIME JOB??? I had a dog until I had to put him down last July. I still cry just thinking about him. My husband doesn't want another dog, and I'm not ready for that fight until I've taken care of myself - health, weight, social, self confidence etc. etc. So I spend my time reading, taking daily 3-5 mile walks and working on my family tree at Ancestry.com.

    Low BMI and Gastric Sleeve

I just had my sleeve surgery last week with a BMI of 36.1. My insurance approved the surgery due to my sleep apnea. Ever doctor I needed to see (Family Practice, Pulmonology, Sleep Medicine) jokingly told me I was the skinniest patient having this surgery. I'm 57 and choose to be proactive before I ended up like my mother who has COPD, is an insulin dependent diabetic, has heart disease and morbid obesity. I've chosen to only tell a very few people outside my immediate family. I didn't want to have to explain my choice to people who think I'm "skinny". Just keep focused on your journey and ignore the people who don't truly appreciate the health issues associated with even mild morbid obesity.
