Help! Incision is opening surgeon useless
Just keep an eye on it and try not to worry. If it starts to feel warm to the touch or oozing yellow then call your PCP back. Otherwise just give it time to heal.

African American vsgers!
I've never heard such a thing or seen any studies to support that. From what I've seen on the forums here I don't think that's true at all. Follow your doctor and nutritionist advice as close as possible. Remember the basic rules: Protein first, then veg and drink your Water. Exercise as soon as possible even if it's just walking for 30 mins a day.

Having the poop issues again
@@lclemur A stool softener is much gentler than a laxative. My doctor actually prescribes them for 30 days post op. I took one colace a day for the first 30 days. I had my first BM 3 days after discharge and I have been regular ever since. I also drink plenty of water. That really does help them move along.

Does everyone meet their protein goal every day?

Warming Up to Water Exercise
@@Martene81 - Check the gyms in your area. Chances are if they have a pool they offer water aerobics or aquafit classes. Also check your insurance career. Some of them cover gym memberships.

1200 calories 6 months out
It varies. I am 6mths and one of those who still eats between 750 - 860 every day. I work out 5 -6 days a week. It works for me. If you are still losing and your nutritionist is okay with it then don't worry about it.

African American vsgers!
It took a week or 2 post op to work up to getting in at least 60gm of protein per day, but now I get in at least 70 pretty much every day. I am 6 mths out. At first hair loss was not a problem. I take Biotin regularly. I was taking this pre-op since I am menopausal and have locs. This week I noticed my temples are a little thin. I've started back using Jamaican Black Castor oil. From what I read on the forums as long as you are getting in your protein, the hair loss should stop after a month or two. My locs are bra strap length and I'm not sure if the thinning edges are from my swimcap( I do aquafit 5 days a week), the WLS, or a combination of both. If you are a loose natural, I would recommend putting your hair in a protective style, make sure you are getting in your vitamins/supplements and protein. Hopefully the loss won't be too bad.

Warming Up to Water Exercise
LOVE my aquafit classes! It is my number 1 exercise. Thankfully I have no shame so putting on a bathing suit has never been an issue for me. I swear my classes are a large part of what made my surgical experience a breeze. A few tips: Krinkle suits are the best. They hold the jiggly bits in but aren't super tight. The built in bras are very supportive. They don't fade or wear thin like even the best chlorine resistant suit does. For those who want more modesty, there are also swim unitards. I'm thinking of trying one of these. A friend suggested they may provide more compression support. A good Water shoe not only makes sure you don't slip walking poolside, it also provides good support. I am currently wearing tevas. If you are walking solo it helps to have some music. I have a water proofed Apple shuffle that I love, but Amazon has several options available at different price points.

Vitamins postop
Why wait? I was taking vitamins and supplements from the day I went home.
-
Pills you say?
Make sure your medical team is aware of all medicine and supplements you are taking. They will advise you as to whether you can swallow the or if you need to find a chewable version. They will also review what may or may not need to be temporarily discontinued. Also be careful opening gel caps. Some were not meant to be taken that way and aren't as effective if you do.

How Closely Do You Stick to the Program?
"Sticking to the program" doesn't mean a diet in any way, shape or form. It simply refers to eating the recommended foods your nutritionist has suggested, taking your supplements and exercising. Of course most of this is a lifestyle change. I full understand this for the rest of my life. However, there is a difference in what I did pre-WLS. Before surgery I took a multi-Vitamin once a day and Biotin for my hair. I know take 2 multi's, biotin, D3, calcium citrate and B12. Before surgery I aimed for 50gms of protein a day and the only worry I had about carbs was making sure I was eating complex carbs more than I ate simple, "white" carbs. Before surgery I worked out 3 - 4 times a week, now I work out 5 - 6 times a week. It doesn't mean I don't have a piece of chocolate on occasion. I do, but I was able to implement the occasion treat into my diet prior to WLS. I don't think anyone here is discussing guilt over the occasional indulgence, but some have admitted that they aren't consistent with things like drinking enough Water, getting enough protein or taking their supplements/vitamins.

Pre op worries
I agree. There are too many factors at play to give a blanket yes or no answer. However I would say a healthy 20 year old who weighs in the 200lbs range might want to try other lifestyle changes before going the surgical route. Try a basic clean eating routine of eating good healthy foods. No fad diets, limit fast foods and take out to once a week. Eat a nutritious Breakfast every day. Just eat balanced meals at least 85% of the time, drink more Water than soda or juice and exercise at least 3 times a week.

Not quite 2 weeks post-op and stalled?!
I only weight myself when I go to the doctor. This often means I don't get wieghed more than once a mth. The good part about this is if I have had a stall, I missed it. I've shown a loss every time I get weighed. I rely more on my food diary. I can usually tell if I will gain/lose by how I am eating. I take measurements every 3 mths.
-
I never thought I'd have this problem
Almost immediately. I didn't have a pre-op diet but did lose a lot within those first 2 weeks post op. I was down 26 lbs at my 2 week check up, then down another 6, then down another 15. At that point clothes started hanging off me and I had to go looking for some of the things that were starting to fit me a little snug.

How Closely Do You Stick to the Program?
With clean eating my motto is 90/10. So 90% of the time I drink water or my Protein shakes. I have coffee maybe twice a week and on occasion I will have fruit juice or tea. I gave up sodas 4 years ago and I like how my body responds to being well hydrated. My skin is clear, I am never constipated and I rarely get hungry between meals. I don't use water additive because I am allergic to food dyes and artificial sweeteners.

How Closely Do You Stick to the Program?
Funny thing. When I first started my weight loss journey, years before I decided on WLS, I joined a gym to take Water aerobics. Even though I was going 4 times a week, I can't say I loved it. I liked that I felt better and was more mobile and flexible as a result so my body liked it. I took and African Dance class yesterday and while I sweated and tried to move my body like the instructor, I realized that not only do I like working out, but when I can't work out like the 3 days last week when I couldn't get to the gym because of the snow, I miss it. I currently work out 5 -6 days a week and not only love it, but I am always looking for new things to try. My point is keep it up. At some point your body not only starts to love the how it feels, but craves it.

Snacking - hard time staying full :/
It might be better if OP would plan 5 small but nutritious meals. This way you don't morph from snacking to grazing and by planning you can at least make smarter food choices. If that's how your body works, there's no need in fighting it, just make it work for you.

Vegetables after weight loss surgery
Try adding Protein rich add ins. chicken breast if you eat meat, black Beans if you're veg. Unless you have a family history of high cholesterol, eat the whole egg. Most of the nutrients are in the yolk. Ease up on the dressing. I use vinegar & olive oil most days. Occasionally I will add a spoonful of salsa instead. Avocado is a healthy fat and very filling. Try different greens. Dark, leafy greens are best. I often use spinach, occasionally blanch kale, spring mix and once and a while arugula.

How do you manage stomach acid and heartburn?
The foaming isn't from acid, it's likely from eating too fast.

Colace 4 Days Post-op
I was started on them in the hospital. They went down fine for me. The gel cap slides easier and feels like it dissolves pretty quickly.

Bathing Suits
I've bought several swimsuits from Swimsuitforall and one from Land's End. Land's End does a great post holiday sale. Swimsuitforall I get my suits for Water aerobics. I buy the kirnkle suits. They are the best for an active water aerobics class. The suits have nice support inside and good, sturdy built in bras. The krinkle fabric holds up to the chlorine better than any chlorine resistant suit. I just picked up a swim bra from BCCOutlet for $7. I'm getting a swim unitard and I wasn't sure how supportive the bra section would be.
