I think the answers to each of those questions varies depending on your insurance and what kind of Bariatric coverage they offer if any. My insurance covers Bariatric surgery so I had to do a 6 month weight loss program. Then they submitted and authorization to my insurance to have a consultation with the surgeon. Once I met with the surgeon and we chose which surgery I would have I then got a list of required medical testing I had to complete plus a class that was required by my insurance. Once all of that was finished I had to submit another claim to get the actual surgery authorized which it was. I started this process last August and I am scheduled for surgery June 13. It could have been sooner, around April, but I pushed it back. As far as a pre op diet goes, most surgeons do require a 2 week pre op diet but they aren't always 2 weeks of liquids only. Mine is 2 weeks of liquids for Breakfast and lunch and dinner is a sensible meal. And then the 48 hours prior to surgery are liquids only. Like I said, most experiences will vary but that's mine and I hope it helped you a bit!

Hello everyone. I am the original poster. I did decide to postpone my surgery until June at which point my daughter will be almost 14 months. Now the obstacle I'm dealing with is my family giving me a guilt trip for wanting to wean her. I have just about 2 months from now to accomplish this and I feel it is totally doable but they aren't being supportive. 😕

I'm sorry but I am able to get plenty of liquids down. I'm 8 days post op and drinking 70 fl oz a day Protein and 30/40 fl oz of Water. I have been power pumping, drinking Protein Shakes with added vitamins/brewers yeast/fenugreek and drinking mothers tea to boost my supply, feeding my baby every 2 hours and it's coming back. Anything is possible if you want it bad enough. I had a weak moment yesterday but after support from my breastfeeding group and following their advice I'm in a better place.
Also, my doctor was fully aware that I have a 4 month old and that I am breastfeeding. He told me to bring my pump and pump/dump in the hospital etc...
Ladies do whatever makes you happy. You can do whatever you want! Every single day gets easier for me.

This is the hardest obstacle I've ever tackled next to parenting, but I think I got this.

I had a four months old at the time and she was fully breastfeeding. My husband fed her bottles while I was away and once I came home I continued breastfeeding her and all was/is fine. I have a very good supply of milk even with the few calories I consume.

I'm expecting my surgery to be February/March and at that time my youngest will be 10-11 months old. My husband and other family members will be around to help but I'm also breastfeeding and a bit nervous about that. Has anyone gotten sleeved while having a baby to look after? How did it go? Any advice?

When I started my 6 month program that is required by my insurance I would go month to month just trying to wing it. Hoping I'd done enough in between appointments to lose some weight. I started to make little changes. I wasn't losing much (obviously) so I thought I'd try 2 Protein shakes a day plus a balanced dinner. That was around month 4 and everything just clicked. Things are still moving slow weight wise unfortunately but at least now I feel I am in the right mindset and really ready for this change. The dietician did mention that the surgeon wants to see a 10-15 pound loss pre op before he'll set a date which scares me that my surgery will be delayed because I'm in my 6th month and I've only lost 4 pounds (no gain but still...) so January 13 is my last weigh in and I'm just going to try my hardest these next 2 weeks to try to get as close to the 10 pound mark as possible, so 6 more pounds. Finger crossed!!

nennas_mommy got a reaction from Loyd G. in Weight loss requirements pre op?
At my last check in, which was 3 out of 6, I was told that I should lose about 5 pounds between each of the remaining appointments. So about 15 pounds total. She said if I do not do this then the surgeon will ask that I lose weight before I will be scheduled for surgery. And I'm not talking about the liquid diet that shrinks your liver type weight loss. She means, just lose weight. Im 250 now (6 pounds lost since I began) so it's not like operating on me will be dangerous due to my weight and after all, Im doing this because I can't lose the weight on my own! I'm a little freaked out about it and I guess I should add that I have feminine issues that make it difficult for me to lose weight. Did any of you have pre op weight loss requirements other than then liquid pre op diet?

My co-worker just got the gastric sleeve done on July 9th. We obviously work for the same company and we have the same insurance, same plan, everything. Well, I recently went to the same seminar she did, at the same hospital she went to and today I got a call from the coordinator saying that my insurance does not cover Bariatric surgery!! What the heck is going on!!?? So I called them myself and the representative gave me a "yes and no" type answer. He said I'd have to go through 6 months of medically supervised weight loss, a psychological evaluation, so on and so forth. All of which is done at the hospital where I went to the seminar! I am just confused.

Yes. My BMI is 43! The minimum is 40. She was told that neither the HMO or PPO plans covered Bariatric services at all! I gave her my call reference number and She said she'd call again tomorrow so finger crossed!
