BloomingLotus got a reaction from JustWatchMe in Not telling anyone
I haven't told a soul about my sleeve. I took a week off from work to "see family out of state."
People are starting to ask about the loss now. I explain that I'm watching what I'm eating and moving more. I thank them for their compliment and then quickly change the subject.
You don't owe anyone any explanations. I know it's uncomfortable to shoot someone down who is expressing concern for you, but you have to do what is best for you!
Good luck!

@@finediva WOW. I can get snarky sometimes and I'd really have to stop myself from making a face and saying "yeah, cancer" and walking away. I suppose it's wrong to lie in church though!
I think most people are so used to everyone oversharing that it's weird when you don't. My mum had some health issues and I went home to see her (out of state) and my boss asked out of genuine concern "is everything ok?" I said "yes, it will be" and left it there and he was kind of staring at me waiting for more information that I just didn't give. I know he only asked because he cared but I didn't feel like sharing.
It makes it uncomfortable to not share when people almost feel entitled to know more (whether genuine or not). I made the decision to tell no one - not a single person outside of this site. No family, no friends, nada. As awkward as it can be, I owe no explanations.
I'm being polite now but I'm sure as I lose more I'll have to watch my level of snark though ???? I'm impressed that you were as nice as you were!

BloomingLotus reacted to Bandista in 75 Pounds Down Today -- I Love My Band!
Weight Loss Surgery was such an out of the blue decision for me -- I'm not even sure exactly how it came about. We live in the boonies, I don't watch TV, and I didn't know any one else with a LapBand (or any other WLS). I am kind of a health food type and had never been an overnight patient in the hospital before. I guess I heard that a cousin's doctor had recommended this for him and so I started digging into the research. Almost right away I realized I was the perfect candidate. I think what this means is that I was READY. I had spent two decades dieting and working every weight loss angle under the sun, yet I always put the weight back on again plus a little more. Each year I was a little heavier, and since I'm in my fifties it was really starting to add up. I ate well, just too much. Now I eat well, just in much smaller portions and at appropriate intervals. What a difference this makes over time.
Here I am today 75 pounds down from when I started 17 months ago. I honestly can't believe it. Next month at a year and a half I hope to be able to report 80. It's been a long winter and I have not been exercising as much as I'd like. I know from experience that for me the exercise is really the magic ingredient. I hate the gym and as soon as this sleet and snow clears off I can't wait to resume outdoor walking again. Last year I bought a bike and I look forward to that. I have arthritis and being able to do these things is a real gift. So much easier without carrying around all that extra weight!
The scale is the scale and sometimes it doesn't budge. I tend to lose some and then hover a long while around a particular number for a while. This can be frustrating but I've learned that it is okay, that the scale will eventually move. Meanwhile, its all about the pants, the pants. I have gone from 18 jeans down to size 10 in the same brand. Right now I have a pair of size 10 jeans in another brand that I picked up on sale and they are way too tight. But I'm going to get into those jeans over time -- and I also have a couple of pair of linen pants in my closet. I try them all on from time to time and that helps keep me motivated. It's all about the pants, the pants.....
Determining a goal weight is hard -- I guess I will know when I get there (and I know I'm not there yet). I'm fairly tall and don't want to be "skinny" -- I like my curves. For now I am thinking 155 might be a good weight for me and I am thrilled to be just 22 pounds away from that goal as of this morning. Oh my goodness, I am so happy!

BloomingLotus reacted to JustWatchMe in Wow. I really changed a habit.
It's been over a month since I started a new thing in my day. I started a routine of walking stairs at work.
Three times a day I walk down 4 flights and up four flights. That's 24 flights of stairs a day. 504 steps.
I do it midmorning, then midday, then midafternoon.
I do this five days a week.
And now it's really a habit. It's easy. It's my routine. I don't have to think about it anymore. I just do it. So much so that I'm considering adding another set of eight flights because I'm often getting my three sets in before lunch.
This is what my new life post WLS is all about. New habits. New patterns.
I'm not a gym rat. But I love to walk now. I also started walking outside on my lunch hour at work. On the days I do this, I easily get in 2-1/4 to 2-1/2 miles. On my lunch break. With arthritic knees yet. This habit is about three weeks old and I do it when the weather permits. So much better than sitting in my car for an hour with a lunch of fried chicken strips.
I need to put this out there because my weight loss has slowed. No, stopped. I want it to start again. I want to lose the last fifty. The first hundred was awesome. Time for the last fifty.
I believe it will happen. If this old broad can make these two changes and enjoy them, anything is possible.

BloomingLotus reacted to Bufflehead in Not telling anyone
You don't have to tell them you are having surgery. Just tell them you are taking some time off. If you do tell them you are having surgery, or they find out somehow, I wouldn't lie about it -- that can come back to bite you and erode your credibility and trustworthiness at work. Sample answers:
"It's female stuff" (assuming you are a woman) -- this is true to an extent because most people who are obese are women, and something like 75% of wls patients are women. If they ask you for more details, just say you aren't comfortable discussing it.
"it's really embarrassing, if I told you we would both be mortified" (let them assume you are having anal fissures repaired or vaginal rejuvenation, who cares)
"it stresses me out too much to talk about it, let's talk about something else"
Or if you are super-confident about your right not to have your privacy invaded:
"that's a really personal question. why would you ask me that?"
I just told people at work that I was taking a couple weeks off for surgery. No one asked me what I was having done -- they are smart people and figured out that if I had wanted to tell them, I would have. Also, I work in a legal setting and the people I work with know that they have no legal right to know about my medical situation, so that made it a bit easier.

Gardening, stargazing, cooking, writing in my journal, being completely absorbed in reading a book, making art or writing. Watching ocean waves, exploring new places, speaking another language. Dancing, having parties, cooking with friends, going to outdoor venues for music performances or picnics. Paper -- I love paper. And scissors, cutting up paper. Beautiful fabric. Tiles. Italy. Europe in general. Trains, ferry boats, art museums. Babies, children and old people, plus some of the ones in-between those ages. But also being alone -- having the house to myself. Quietude. And flowers of all kinds, flowering shrubs and blooming fruit trees, perennial borders, raised garden beds and fields of plantings -- agricultural and landscape design, patterns in nature and having the time and mindset to see them.
