I am in South St. Paul and pre-op. Planning to have my surgery at Abbott Northwestern with Dr. Raymond Drew. Has anyone had their WLS at Abbott or with Dr. Drew? Not far from scheduling surgery, only 5 lbs to lose and 1 more psych visit to make it through.

Hello! Fairly new to this site and looking to see if there's anyone from MN still on here and active on the site. I am about to have surgery Nov 2014. Really about to hit the liquid diet phase. Getting excited and nervous.

Hello - so awesome that you were just posting an update about the support group. I was just online searching when the next one is here at my hospital. I have not been to one yet (10 days post op) but really wanting to do this RIGHT and make it successful. I'm still on puree foods (til 11/25) when I have my 2 week check up. Since surgery day I have lost 10 pounds and feel really good.
Hoping the transition to soft foods goes well and that I stay in control. As I go through this journey I am finding more and more that I have quite the relationship with food. Use it for companionship, entertainment, coping with stress, to Celebrate things. Working on that now....figuring out replacements, etc.

I am so glad someone posted about this. My surgery is on Nov 10th and being just 2 weeks out, I've contemplated about this all along. Really, as of today, only 5 people in my life know that I'm about to do this. The comments about being "such a personal decision" are SO right on. I had a really hard time telling people. Not because I am not sure about my decision, but because it is hard to re-explain, re-defend the decision. And it's like you want people to know, look, I didn't come to this overnight. This was a long process of education and decisions. I really like the suggestions of "thank you" and then giving some general answers of diet, exercise, etc. I'm sure people at work will figure it out - I'm taking the 2 weeks off work and since I'm their Supervisor, a peer of mine is being flown in to fill in for me. I know they'll figure / know that I'm clearly off for a medical reason, coming back with some obvious weight off will be telling. But the fact is, they'll think what they think. I am grateful for others sharing their same feelings on this!

I am wrapping up my puree foods stage. I gotta say "creativity" is tough for me but my go to's are: Cottage cheese with pureed canned pineapple (the "no sugar added" can). I scoop maybe 2 tablespoons of the pineapple mush on top of 3 tblspns cottage cheese. Another common one I do is instant mashed potatoes with a scoop of cream of chicken Soup on top. Swear this pretty much tastes like gravy :-)

Oh Shellbell - yes, I had a case of the "lasts" but what was awful is that it didn't really start until AFTER I began my 2 week pre-op liquid diet. Prior to it I thought oh yeah, this my last Caribou coffee...or this is my last Buffalo Wild Wings. But I didn't really give it much thought. 3 days into the liquid diet I found myself obsessing over wanting just one last time with a chipolte burrito, one last time with a great Pasta dinner. I think it's totally normal. I see your surgery date was yesterday - how did it go??

    Hello!!!
I am scheduled for TODAY....November 10th. AH! So much excitement, nerves, unknowns. I've been on the 2 week liquid diet (1,000 calories or less) and dropped like 14 lbs from it. Cannot wait to make it to the other side.
Have a great day - I hope too as well!

November 10th for me. I am also both excited and nervous at the same time. I am also having a hiatal hernia repair and my gall bladder removed so I will be having a three part surgery. I would love to connect and provide support to other November surgeries!

Oh THANK YOU for posting on this. My husband started out by "going to do the 2 week liquid diet with me". That can't and doesn't last. I even asked him to go back to eating so that one of us was in a normal state of mind for our kid.
But up to 3 weeks before my surgery date, I still had not told my Dad. As everyone on here has said - it's a mixture of reasons and fears. As days went by I expressed my hesitancy to tell my Dad. Finally one night he just yelled out "JUST TELL HIM - GOD!" Naturally, I shut down. I did tell my Dad. And ever since then (about a week or so) my Dad is well, reacting somewhat how I feared. A mix. Ugh. I don't think anyone understands unless they have been through this. There's just no way.

Teensibaby - I am November 10th. Very similar, had my first surgeon appt in June/July-ish and all has just sailed from there. Have you started the pre-op diet yet? My surgeon requires a 2 week liquid diet, I'm on Day 6. REALLY shocked at how well it works and how quickly the body adjusts. Good luck to you, I'm just a day ahead.

Kymcakes...I am Nov 10th as well. Day 1 kicked my butt. I got sweaty and shaky around noon, had consumed 400 calories. I tried getting a Protein Shake in then but it didn't seem to kick in. Learned I need the Jello, yogurt, pudding hitting my stomach to help. I'm going to concentrate on the 10 - 12:00 hours to get more Protein in. Dinner....I slept through it! This 1000 calorie max is leaving me very tired!

I know what you mean, wanting to cut the taste of sweets. I'm allowed broth and it very much does what you say. Odd suggestion but maybe try heating up Water or the flavored water so it will seem like tea?
You CAN do this. Yes, I hear all sorts of variations from different surgeons. My best friend had this in July at another hospital but same network. She only had to do liquids a couple days before. However, she was also constantly scared that last week about gaining weight. I knew, going on 2 week liquid, there's no danger of that :-)

Dabliss - how are you doing now with the liquid diet? I'm on Day 6 and still hanging in there. Found that I DO NOT like the GNC powders or any powder I mix, I seem to be partial to the already mixed stuff like EAS AdvantEdge Carb Control. Good luck with it all, take care!
