I am a librarian so research is my thing. However, I'm leery of spending my time locating the research for you when a simple Google search using the key words, "alcohol dependence bariatric surgery" returns quite a few results. Seems like this issue is no secret. If I thought it would make a difference & you would use this info in a responsible manner, I'd hop on that research for you. But Something tells me that you are going to do what you want to do anyways. What I don't get is why not save time & take your surgeon's & the many folks on this board's word for it. I mean we can't all be blindly following our programs plans without logic & reason... right?

I don't get it. What is the attraction with liquor that it is so important to defend? Most of it smells like horse piss anyway. What amazes me is that a person can drink a six pack or a twelve pack of beer on Superbowl Sunday, but no way would they drink 12 cans of Water.
I do understand that in some places around the globe, the wine is safer to drink than the Water, but we are not in Outer Mongolia. Oh well. We have gone around the barn and back with this thread. I give up. I'm out.

My program is very conservative, particularly about alcohol. The transference of addictions was the main concern, as nutritionist, surgeons, psycholologist, and nurses all discussed with me during all stages of this process. I drank maybe a glass of wine a month before surgery, so didn't quite understand what the big deal was. Well after they showed the research during our various meetings...I no longer questioned the importance of being aware of this problem. Combine the research proven issues of addiction, empty calories, stress on the liver after a major surgery, not to mention my new tummy is so small I really don't want to waste space on alcohol...I choose not to go against my program's rules in regards to alcohol. Just not worth it in my opinion.
But something I've learned on boards...some people rationalize/loosely interpret their programs rules...so my words or the words of way more experienced/successful others is taken offense to or just ignored anyways no matter how much logic is provided. Folks will do what they want to do period.

Some people will insist on drinking days after surgery regardless of the research. Don't waste your time.

For me personally, carbs are the devil If I go over 40 carbs, it slows my roll. I eat mostly paleo/primal. That means basically that I avoid the inside rows in the grocery store except for spices or paper products. I strive to not eat anything made in a factory.
I wag my head and my heart sinks every time someone posts that are disregarding their doctor's plan and just doing what they want, and eating stage four regular foods as soon as they get home from the hospital. If you follow the stages of re-intoducing foods to your new tummy and are gentle with it, you will be rewarded with the weight loss you are seeking with little or no complications. I wish you good luck and good health.

It was pretty cut and dry, the way the NUT put things. No bread, Pasta, sugar, soda. It definitely amazes me what I've seen others eat, but hey it's their journey not mine. I want to use my new tool as effectively as I can, while I can. Its potency, for lack of better terms, seems to not be very long (long enough to lose), so why jeopardize any possible progress?

I haven't read through the responses...only the original post. So here it goes...
When I was obese, I would frequently make people laugh when I said "God made me big because he knew I wouldn't act right skinny." You see, I have no issues with women with lovely figures or even lovelier Confidence displaying what God gave them. I appreciate beauty. There's something powerful in feeling great & dressing in a way that makes you feel good & not caring what others think. Now that I've gotten my groove back, you'd better believe I'm going to wear whatever makes me feel pretty, sexy, etc. as Bobby brown said, It's My Perogative!

    Congrats all you guys!
I've lost 103 lbs -- 36 more to go. This last week I started being able to run on a soft track again without my knees hurting--first time since high school. Ran 2 miles without a break! My birthday is in early July so not going to get to my goal by then, but maybe below 200. I am starting to not recognize myself in the mirror.

I'm 9 months post-op and have reached my weight loss goal.
I lost my weight in a way that worked for me -- ate lots of Protein, ate Protein first, ate lots of "healthy" carbs (veggies, some fruits, occasional whole grains), minimized my intake of "slider foods" (highly processed carbs), and waited until 5 months post-op before I started drinking wine again and then only 4 oz. a day and not every day.
But occasionally I had a a few bites of dessert or some bread or some fast food or something else I didn't eat very often. The key word there is occasionally. And I didn't eat a lot of those "not recommended foods."
I also planned my daily menus and tracked my food intake during the weight loss phase on www.myfitnesspal.com, so I'd know what I was really doing. I tracked everything I ate, whether protein or Pringle's potato chips. It worked for me.
But there are a lot of people who don't do it this way. The "eat until I'm satiated" way works for some people. But there's quite a range of people in the "eat until I'm satiated" department. Some follow the protein rules and don't overeat. Others seem to suffer badly from the conviction that "Nobody can tell me what to do, and I don't have to follow the rules because I'm a special snowflake and I don't feel like doing it, so fukkit and pass the ribs and potato salad now! If I wanna cheat, I'll cheat, so get off my back."
All kinds of people get WLS. Some of 'em are smart. And some of 'em are really not. The ones who seem to do the worst with WLS are those who are have very little impulse control and can't delay gratification at all. It takes a lot of commitment to change a lifetime of giving in to one's desires of the moment to conquer those bad habits. Very tough.

@@B-52 Real quick...cause I'm going to be late, but just wanted to say that I hear you and agree. I wish there was a forum specifically for those who actually follow the plan or whose level of commitment is unwavering for the most part. Ive also found that some of the folks/vets that stick around are really negative & as we know...negativity is contagious. Peace & blessings

This was an interesting thread. Thanks for making me think @@LipstickLady . As I thought this through, I came to the conclusion that whether we call it, cheating or choosing, simply doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. I came across a quote that says, "If you kind of sort of try, you kind of sorta get results." In other words, the results you achieve are directly proportional with the efforts you put in. So really, whether we call it cheating or choosing...kind of a moot point in my opinion and is just semantics describing the same effort or lack thereof.
