    Keto

Hello, I've was sleeved back in May of 2015 and was losing weight but had a stall. I started Keto on 5/30/2018 and have already lost 40 lbs as of today. I love the Keto lifestyle. I would and have recommended this lifestyle to many of my family members and even co-workers. The change in weight has been dramatic and I am always being asked how am I losing the weight. Only draw back is having to buy smaller clothes.
  3. Back on track! Been disappointed in myself. I have no one to blame but myself. Haven't been following what is should be to continue with this weight loss and eating junk but a recent wake up call has got me back on track and I have lost 8 lbs since this past Monday and I have been going back to gym almost daily hoping to jump start my weight loss again. Have to complete this journey.

  5. Lost 10 lbs over holidays. Yeah!

  6. Well I was able to get the vertical gastric sleeve done on May 6, 2015 and had a hernia repair at the same time. The only problem I had was that I didn't wake up following surgery until a month and a half later. Apparently following the surgery, which my doctor said went well, they could not bring me out from the anesthesia. During this time my family tells me hey lost me on the table but were able to resuscitate me. When they tried to re-intubate me I apparently aspirated into both lungs developing double pneumonia, sepsis, ARDS, and a plethora of other health problems. I was stabilized and taken to ICU where about 2 weeks later I had a tracheostomy tube inserted into my trachea to allow them to better manage my respiratory status as well as suction the secretions coming from my lungs. I was also kept under induced coma by the doctors for this month and half with TPN feeding, IV's infusing, being placed on a ventilator. From what my family tells me the doctors gave me little chance to survive as I was in very critical condition during this time. There was also talks of placing my on dialysis as my kidneys were shutting down because of all the medications being given to me to try to help me. At one point blood was even coming out of my catheter and draining into bag. When I was allowed to wake up I found myself bewildered as to what had happened. was unable to talk because of the trach. When I tried to move I was unable to lift my right arm or both legs as the muscles had atrophied during the month and half of being comatose. I spent another 3 weeks in the hospital then was transferred to a sub acute rehab center where I would spend a little over a month learning how to walk, dress, bathe, and feed myself. The trach was finally removed this past Monday and I was discharged home on Wednesday. I am able to walk for short distances but I do still get winded and fatigued. I also have some difficulty coughing up phlegm as my cough is still weak. Probably a residual from the trach but pray this will resolve it self in time. I start out patient physical therapy tomorrow and hope I can walk as before and with I feel more secure and stable. Since the surgery I have lost 60 lbs in these past 3 months and continue to lose about 5-8 lbs a week. I continue to eat very little food and fill up quickly. I am still trying to get all my Protein in as well as all my Water and liquids.

    Complications following surgery

I just want to thank everyone for their kind words and good wishes. From my understanding it was just something that just happened and was not attributed to any allergic reaction to anesthesia or other medical condition. Besides the complication following surgery and everything I have endured, I would get the surgery again. In just this short amount of time since the surgery with the weight I have lost I am feeling much better health wise. My knees do not bother me as much as they did before, the sleep apnea I had has diminished and my snoring has decreased tremendously. I have gone down almost 2 sizes in clothes going from a snug 5X to almost a size 3X. Don't let my story frighten anyone reading this from going ahead with WLS if this is what you want. It has helped me lose weight and become healthier. Any surgery comes with risks but also living at a weight of 450 lbs.
  8. Surgery date tomorrow

My surgery date is finally here tomorrow. Not to nervous about surgery but more concerned about not being able to eat anymore. I guess that's what got me into this situation in the first place.

    5 days and counting

Will be sleeved in 5 days or so I hope> My doctor has me on a pre-surgery diet for the last week and a half. Have lost a total of 26 lbs since my surgery was schedule, My doctor said if my liver is not thin enough he will not be able to do the sleeve or repair the hernia as well. Hope these last 2 weeks of sacrifice of drinking broth and protein shakes have been worth it.
  10. 6 days away from getting sleeved

  11. Surgery fast approaching on May 6. I am excited but anxious to get it done. Has been a long process to get to this point. I'm currently on a pre-op diet to shrink my liver. Will see surgeon on the 23rd of pril for pre-op labs and eval. Hope everything goes well. Just want to start my journey and get healthy.
  12. Hello all I am scheduled for surgery on May 6th. I am scheduled for pre-op visit with my Doctor in two weeks and final pre-op labs that same day. I am anxious to get this done as it has been a long journey getting to this point. I am having my surgery done at Kaiser South Bay in California.
  13. Hello all, Just saw my surgeon after almost a year of waiting following removal of lap band last April. My Doctor finally set a tentative date for May 6, 2015 for my surgery. I am excited that I now have a date set as I have struggled this past year. Not surprisingly I have gained weight following the removal of the lap band. My doctor has started me on a pre-surgery diet not so much to lose weight but to shrink the liver and give him space to move around inside me to do sleeve and also to take care of a hernia as well. Now its up to me to stay on this diet. I can have a Protein shake for Breakfast another one for lunch and a sensible portion controlled meal at dinner. He suggested using lean cuisine or healthy choice as examples for meal portions. I hear of people having problems with a 2 week pre-op diet but at almost 8 weeks I hope I can hang in there and not cheat as I really want to have this surgery done and start my journey to my new life. He did say I can have diet Jello and popsicles so I hope its not too bad.
  14. I will be having the sleeve done on May 6th and am looking forwards to finally getting it done. Its been a long journey getting to this point and just want it done. My question is that I always enjoyed contact sports when I was fit and trim in my youth. I am looking forwards to getting back in shape and was concerned about contact after being sleeved. Since staples are used is there any risk for the site to open up after a year or so of healing? I hear about leaks sometimes so was just concerned. If anyone can answer I would appreciate it. I am looking into kickboxing/krav maga classes to help weight loss and to help with cardio once I lose significant weight and am able to participate. Thank you
  15. Thank you all for all your input. It does seem a long pre-op diet to follow. I will follow up with the nutritionist tomorrow. As for the pre-packaged food, he mentioned to use them as a guide for portion control and just a little more convenient for some of his patients but prefers if you make your own sensible meal at home.

    Upcoming appointment with surgeon

Its been awhile since I last made a entry. Its been 10 months since my lap band was removed and I have scheduled an appointment with mu surgeon for this Thursday February 26, 2015 at Kaiser South bay to see If he will perform my surgery. He told me to wait a year to see him I pray that this is close enough for him to consider giving me a date for surgery. I think one of the hardest things this past year was the uncertainty of when I would be able to have it done. This has definitely been a hard year. I am a little afraid of seeing him as I have gained weight over the past 10 months. I'll keep everyone informed as to what he says on Thursday.

    Kaiser So. California

I just finished my options classes at Kaiser Downey. The classes are very informational and you get a lot of support from your classmates. we were fortunate enough to be able to attend a Post op support group meeting and received straight forward and honest answers to ourquestions from patients that had received their surgery. After you finish all of your classes and have labs and physical done you literally will get called within the week to be scheduled for consult with your surgeon. I have seen my surgeon but due to the fact that I just had my lap band removed I have to wait at least 6 months to a year to be cleared for surgey. Fom what I have heard from classmates it will go real fast.

    Frustrated with whole system

It's been a frustrating couple of months and it keeps getting better. In January I was able to get insurance through work. Kaiser is my Insurance. I asked my PCP about weight loss and he referred me to the options program through Kaiser. Its their weight loss class you have to attend before being approved for weight loss surgery. As I had previously had a lap band in place I was told that Kaiser no longer wants to deal with these as they have been found to be basically worthless and problems with slipping and erosion they are just not worth the problem. I was interested in getting it removed as in the 6 years Ihave had it I only lost 50 lbs initially and since then I have just stayed the same. Plus I was having complications of vomiting and unable to eat certain foods. As I received a call from Kaiser to see a surgeon on the following week I went to see him and was scheduled to have it removed. I asked him about the sleeve and said he needed to remove the band first then we would discuss the possibility of getting the sleeve after finishing the options program. 2 weeks later I went for out pt surgery and had the lap band removed. On my follow up visit 2 weeks later the surgeon told me he would be happy to see me in a year to discuss getting sleeved. 1 year I have to wait, Is he kidding me?. Depressed I continued to go to the options program and complied with their requirements of having labs drawn, being tested for H. pylori, going to 3 hour classes everyother friday evening after a long days work just to be told to wait a year. I talked to the program director as to having to wait a year to discuss with surgeon ossibility of having surgery but she said to complete the program as it was good for a year and she would schedule me for another consult with another surgeon. I researched on linne about timeline from lap band removal to having sleeve done and some said could be done immediately other said wait 2 to 3 months. I went to see the other surgeon and was asked why did I go see him. I explained my situation and was basically told the same thing. I would have to wait at least 6 months to a year as I run the risk of leaking from the stomach as the tissue has been damaged by the lap band. Has anybody heard of thishappening? Now I am not sure what I want to do. I know I can't stay this way and need to lose this weight but the possibility of a leak and complications really scared me. I wish the first doctor would have told me the risk and possile complications associated with the lap band removal. Now my hopes of being healthier and fit by this time next year is out the door and feel depressed at being overweight for another year. Sorry all just venting at this situation.
