I only told my 2 kids, my hub, 2 sisters and a friend about my surgery. I figure it's a private thing. When people ask me how I'm loosing weight, I tell them the truth.....I am following a high Protein, low carb diet. Enough said!

I just want to thank everyone who was so kind to share their views and diet suggestions. I'll keep plugging along trying to eat mostly Protein but i do plan on adding in a bite here and there of veggies and such. If all of you have had success with a more liberal eating plan then I truly believe I can too. I will still be calling my Dr about my problems too. Thanks again!

Thanks IcanMakeit and BellaLuce......I will be calling my Dr on Monday and advocating for a less restrictive diet. At one month out, there must be a few things that I can add to my diet without blowing it. I really appreciate all the input!

I'm exactly the same way. I have never passed so much gas in my life. It's like I've been holding it in for the past 30 years and now it's time to let loose! BTW.....I'm almost 7 weeks out....

Wow this is something. At almost two months out, I can have whole grains, some frutis, low fat cheese and even a pat of butter. I am sitting her snacking on 2 tbls of bulgar and curry shrimp(one shrimp) now. truly every plan is different. I hope the best for you. Hang in there.

Since I went to Mexico for my surgery and wouldn't have a local team providing support, I've done tons of research for myself. I felt very comfortable making my own choices as far as what to eat and when, using what my surgeon suggested as a guideline.

My personal choices were to start pureed and soft foods earlier than recommended, I don't eat 80g of Protein every day, I eat a lot of veggies, I don't use Protein shakes/mixes/bars on a regular basis, and I eat whole foods (clean eating, paleo, whatever... it's real, not processed).

Much to my sadness, I've found that simple carbs like bread and pizza crust don't work for me -- I stopped losing, I actually gained, I felt "heavy", and so I'm leaving them out for now. I don't believe carbs are BAD, just at this point in my journey, they're not my friends.

When I hit 80lbs gone, I began the Whole30 program to eliminate dairy (OMG, no cheese!!!!), gluten, legumes (I miss black beans) and added sugar, including artificial sweeteners, from my diet. An elimination diets of sorts. We'll see how I feel when the 30 days is done and I'll make additions... or not... from there.

I eat over 1,000 calories almost every day (usually closer to 1,200-1,400) and am still losing at a great pace and HEALTHY so whatever works for you!

Sorry you have to go through this difficult and unnecessary diet regimen. I still don't get why your surgeon does this because you WILL lose weight after VSG without the addition of a fad diet. Just like Buffer, I've been there done that with the Atkins.< /p>
Personally, I feel it's important to learn to eat healthy from the start. This new lifestyle is forever, you might as well learn how to make good, healthy choices. The more restrictive a diet plan is, the more likely you will cheat and that sets the patient up for failure (in general) I also don't think the extreme calorie restrictive postop diets make sense, either. If you only eat 600-800 calories, that's what your body will get used to, your metabolism will slow down and it will be much more difficult to lose and or maintain at a "normal" caloric intake for the rest of your life.
Sorry for my ramblings, but seeing that a bariatric surgeon doesn't have faith in his own procedure is very weird to me. And obviously I'm not a "professional"....just a successful WLS patient who knows what works for me. Oh, and BTW, even while eating normal food, nothing tasted good to me, I had no appetite, and eating was a very unwelcome chore for about 3-4 months. So I think a lot of that is normal no matter what your postop diet is. Good luck to you...it will get better!

hey change it up....i am 5 weeks out...i am supposed to eat what you are too....but like you...i'm sick of that stupid list of 10 foods to eat and nothing else. yogurt and cottage cheese are dairy products...so apparently you CAN have dairy. i hate yogurt and the Protein shakes are just so gross sometimes. i tried eggs, ricotta cheese with spaghetti sauce, ricotta cheese with s/f blueberry sauce, refried Beans with l/f sour cream and taco sauce, chicken, tuna, fish, and creamed Soups. everything gets blah so fast. 4 or 5 bites of something and i'm done. have you made s/f pudding at all?? i made s/f chocolate pudding and put chocolate Protein powder in it. not too bad... i have to admit...i have been trying bites of other foods here and there...ham deli meat, turkey deli meat, cheese from a pizza, pretty much anything i make for my family...i will take a bite or 2 of it and see what happens. if you chew anything enough times...it'll be pureed. my next f/u visit is next week and i know the next phase is pretty much the same as this one....YUCK...i'm going to be inching along faster than that because the diet is just so ridiculous. by christmas...we should almost be able to eat everything again. i don't understand the discrepancy between all these different doctor's diet...why some can eat and some can't...there should be a standard rule of thumb...and if there isn't....them there's nothing stopping us from advancing our own diet little by litte.

Hi Lag50......thanks for your post. I was exactly like you before my surgery and am still in the mindset of eating to live, not living to eat. And i have never been a 'bad eater'.....can honestly say that I haven't eaten a dessert in years. If I had any craving before surgery it might have been some chips with french onion dip and I'd have that maybe 4 times a year. And, I'm not looking to "enjoy" food at this point, I'm looking to tolerate the stuff. Nothing....and I mean.....nothing.....tastes good to me. It's all like mucky cardboard! I would just really like to know if this is normal, how long it lasts and if anyone has any ideas how to deal with it. BTW....good luck to you in your journey.

Hi All........I'm not usually one to complain but I really am becoming miserable over here. I am one month plus 2 days out and I'm losing 3 to 4 pounds a week, which is great....but it's becoming a battle to eat. My Dr keeps his patients on NOTHING but Protein for the first 3 months and I'm hating the stuff at this point. Absolutely nothing appeals to me nor does it taste good. I have to force myself to eat and my typical day is either a scrambled egg or yougurt or cottage cheese for Breakfast, the same for lunch and then approximately 2 oz of shredded Protein for dinner plus a Protein shake somewhere along the way. I can't seem to get more than 2 oz down at a time and I know that I'm barely hitting my target of 60grams of protein a day. I also have become totally adverse to my bariatric Vitamins (swallowable type) and am planning on going back on the chewable as soon as I can pick them up on Monday.
Anyway, my question is this.....Is this normal? To actually have either no appetite at all or to feel nauseous at the thought of approved protein? I do get my Water in pretty well each day.
Please advise and thanks to everyone in advance!

Change it up got a reaction from RJ'S/beginning in plastic surgeon. Just going to say it!
I am so sorry you were subjected to such an assine Doctor. The medical creed of "I shall do no harm" obviously wasn't learned by him very well and he and his staff sound like they are in it for the money. The first thing I would do if I were you is remind myself how far I have come and that true beauty shines from within no matter what our "shell" looks like. Secondly, I would report him to the AMA or whatever organization it is that looks into complaints against Doctors, along with the facility that he works at.....and I'd do it by certified mail. Third, I would contact my bariatric surgeon's office and ask for references of reputable plastic surgeons who work consistently with bariatric patients and their needs. They seriously should be able to help you. If not, call other bariatric surgeon offices and find out who they recommend. I sincerely hope that you will get the help that you need, both medically and emotionally and I'll be shooting up prayers for you. God Bless.
