    Disappointed

It seems like forever but hang in there... compared to the rest of your life, it's a really short time!

I am scheduled to have gastric bypass on 10/7/14

Perfectly normal to be nervous and excited! This is a big deal and if you weren't nervous, I'd think it meant you haven't researched it enough. One thing I did to help pass the time before surgery was to pack up the past season's clothes. My surgery was June 7, so I went through and packed up all my big winter clothes and put them in bags. I didn't actually donate them until after surgery (just in case I didn't have the surgery for some reason) but as soon as the surgery was over, they went to Goodwill. And, now that the weather's getting colder, I'm in MUCH smaller sizes and need to go shopping like TODAY! Start packing up all those big summer clothes because next summer, you're going to be enjoying all the new, smaller stuff! Start now looking at how much Protein is in different foods. It took some education for me to know what was really high in protein and what was not. I mean, meat is pretty obvious, but I didn't know what Beans were best, yogurts, nuts, etc. It's good practice to go ahead and start finding the foods you'll be eating after. Best wishes! This has been the greatest experience for me -- hope you're just as successful. Ginger

    Frustrated. ...SLOW WL!

I'm sorry you're frustrated with your loss. I agree about tracking... I can never "keep it in my head" but track everything I eat. Not real hard to do when you don't eat much. Are you focusing on Protein? I find if I'm eating 60 grams of protein a day, I don't have much room for anything else. The only other things I eat are fruit, veggies and maybe half a whole wheat tortilla wrapped around some lunch meat or Beans. I usually have a piece or two of fruit a day or a small serving (few bites) of a veggie. Almonds are my best friend... Either have 14 as a snack or sometimes 28 as a "meal". Low sugar (less than 10) fat free Greek yogurt is also a staple. That can make a meal for me or the yogurt with the 14 almonds. I also agree with sharing the food diary with your NUT and/or doctor. If you're doing everything right, the weight will have to fall off. You're exercising a lot -- my NUT told me to add some carbs in when I'm heavy exercising. That's when I added in the fruit and veggies to the diet (around week 5). It's important for the quick energy you need for exercise. You don't really have the option of giving up, so stick with it and look to your support team (doctor, NUT) to help you see if there's anything they can suggest. You can do this!
  4. So, the day I complain about not dropping a pound in 10 days, I drop a pound. Obviously complaining is the secret to losing weight! lol

LMAO, I do it all the time, and then the next week I drop like 2 or 3 lbs, it's funny???

Yes, it is frustrating! I've lost several pounds in a under a week, only to see most of it come back a day later. Fluid retention plays games with our minds! Keep the faith.

  5. Hurt my hip - can't exercise... scale has stayed the same for 10 days straight now - going crazy but I'll keep keeping on

Hang in there girl, it will move again. I have been stuck for almost 2 weeks now. But, I figure our bodies have to do some catching up. I haven't been able to walk/exercise for about 3 weeks, so I am sure that is part of it as well. I am going to keep keeping on too!

So, yesterday I complained, today I dropped that next pound. Complaining obviously burns a lot of calories! I knew weight loss would get slower the closer I got to goal so I expected this. Makes it a little easier to swallow.

Nope, it was a fluke, I complain all the time and it doesn't work. Wait, maybe it only works for WLS patients. I GOT TO GET SOME! LOL

I am so angry at myself

@jessiquoi Short term solution -- can you postpone your appointment for a week? Say you're sick or something. And then stop beating yourself up (that DOESN'T count as exercise! ) and get back on track. After surgery, you have something helping you stay in control, so even emotional eating is easier to manager. Best wishes G

Why do I need so much protein?

Protein helps protect the muscle you have and build more. More muscle = faster metabolism. Muscles burn fat. End of story! Ginger
  8. Challenging weekend of a LOT of driving, trying to find healthy options when I stopped (packed some food but not everything) and having car trouble causing an extra nights stay. Add that to PMS and a problem with my hip keeping me from exercising... I'm in quite a state!

@ginger snap, ok lady, it happens to all of us from time to time, so, these are the places that I go to when this happens to me - sans the PMS because hopefully that is over with for me. Wendy's for Chili, Taco Bell for Cantina Bowl. When knees give me problems, I take the needed rest and sit back with my favorite crystal light drink and say WOO-SAH~~~ What else can we girls do right?!? Peace.

I noticed that change, too. I wonder if it's if you get WAY below the 1200 or so they think everyone should be on? I only get around 600-800 a day so I used to get the projection and the "starvation mode" warnings but now just that warning.

Some unexpected NSVs have me LOLing in public. You?

I went to see a Broadway play 2 weekends ago and it's amazing how much bigger they've made those theater seats since the last time... oh, wait... it's not the seat that's bigger, my butt's that much smaller! Saw the pulmonologist Tuesday to officially dump the sleep apnea machine since I don't need it anymore (woot woot!). She told me how great I looked and said "you look like you're at the weight you're meant to be." How great of a compliment is that and I took it for all it was worth even though I still want to get down about 20 more.
  11. Ginger Snaps

    How many calories?

I think a lot of us are on MFP... At 2-4 weeks out I was only getting around 300-400 calories a day. Now I'm 3 months and average between 600-800. Don't worry too much about calories, just try to get that Protein in. It is really hard to do but will get easier. Don't stress too much... it gets better.

    I just want to cry

Our bodies are strange how they react. I do weigh every day but instead of letting it frustrate me, I try to use it as motivation. If I gain, I just use that to recommit to staying on my food plan that day, exercising... It reminds me not to slack up. If the scale stays the same, it's the same thing -- stay on plan, exercise, drink Water... If I lose, well, that's a happy day and I feel energized to work out even harder and feel even more committed to staying on plan. It is absolutely impossible for you not to lose weight if you're staying on the plan your doctor ordered, taking in less calories than your body uses. I saw someone say the other day that it's not a day by day factor, it's a long term one. Water weight, sweating, needing a poo, sodium... all those things can make your weight fluctuate. Just keep going -- you'll be fine!

    Eating is no longer fun

It does feel a little like a chore because I don't ever really feel hungry. I kind of eat by the clock and just eat the amounts I'm supposed to. I don't mind eating with the family -- I was always a slow eater but it's funny now that I eat 4 ounces of something and my teen boys have each put away 2 plates of something. It is so much harder when you're still on liquids or soft foods. When you're able to eat more normal foods, you'll probably feel more comfortable than you do now. And, as you lose more weight and see the results, you won't mind those tiny meals at all. It's all worth it!
  14. Scale moved this morning -- 51 pounds down and 19 to go until my conservative goal... Woot Woot!

    Feel like giving up

@Marie8777 We've all been there... the waiting game is tough! I started calling my insurance company and it helped me. They kindlly explained the process, told me the status of my case and even gave me the name and number of the nurse reviewing. I aclled her and explained that my surgery was scheduled for Monday (this was the Thursday before) and that I was really stressing. She had asked some questions earlier in the week and she told me that when they request more information, your file goes to the bottom of the stack again. But, she said since it was so close, she'd put me on the top of the pile and get back to me. About 4 hours later, I got my approval. It never hurts to call and ask for the status. I think we tend to think of insurance companies as the bad buys who want to deny us, but in my case, they were all extremely helpful and very kind to me. Your mileage may vary, but it's worth a shot. Best wishes!
  18. My doctor recommended taking 2 Colace pills a day (one in morning, one at night) and getting more Fiber. He said once I was more regular, to drop the Colace to once a day. I chew 4-5 fiber gummies a day -- which is a nice treat because gummies were always one of my favorite foods. However, I found I had to stop taking Vitamins that contained Iron... nothing else helped. I've never been anemic (even while pregnant) and have never been able to tolerate vitamins with iron in them or I would get horribly constipated. My doctor is concerned about me not taking iron and I have to go get bloodwork. If it shows I'm getting anemic, we'll have to figure something out because I cannot live on stool softeners and laxatives. I don't think I'm anemic because I have so much energy and feel great, so hopefully I'm just an iron machine and won't have to supplement.

    Help for stalls

I use MFP, too and you're right... it does help you see the overall downward trend. I also keep an Excel spreadsheet and calculate my average weight loss per week since surgery. When I do that, I see that on average I'm losing 3-4 pounds a week, even with a stall week here and there. Very motivational!
  20. Ginger Snaps

    I was denied!

One piece of advice... try to get your appointment scheduled as early as possible in the morning and that morning, don't eat or drink anything before going. I can weight as much as 4 pounds less earlier in the morning than later in the day.
  21. Up at 4:45 this morning to run with Zombies... my son starting back to school has moved my wake up/work out time even earlier. Not sure I can maintain that...

I'm right there with ya. 5am is bad enough - let alone getting up any earlier. :/ Going to the gym today after work. Hoping I can keep that up until our schedules go back to normal in a couple weeks. GREAT JOB for getting up and getting it DONE!!!

Good for you! One day at a time, and you did today. Keep it up.

  22. You might ask your surgeon if there is a bariatric coordinator at the hospital or if there is a class to tell you what to expect in the hospital. My hospital had an hour long class where we toured the floor we'd be on and they described every step of what to expect... pre-op meds, starting IV, during operation, recovery, what liquids you'd get while you were there. It was very thorough and answered all my questions. Worth checking into.
  23. Ginger Snaps

How long does it usually take?

You can always call your insurance company and ask them. I did and they told me the status of my approval and also told me they had 10 business days to review and make a decision. No harm in asking!

    Finally

I can remember how I felt pre-surgery... couldn't wait, felt like time was dragging, couldn't get it off my mind, obsessing... Let me tell you, post-surgery life has been wonderful! Feeling like a million bucks, exercising, dropping pounds, buying smaller clothes... The wait is SO worth it. You should start now figuring out what foods have the most Protein, trying to cut out bad carbs (breads, processed, rice, pasta) and sodas. However, if you can't do that, don't worry. I had my last diet Coke the day before surgery because I just couldn't stop on my own. But, since surgery, haven't even craved one. It seems like time's crawling but just try to be patient and you'll get there soon enough. Best wishes!

    Surgery tomorrow!

@Floridagirl2 Best wishes on your surgery. Follow the plan and you'll be successful. But remember, as soon as they'll let you, walk, walk, walk!
