MKCMom got a reaction from Alex Brecher in Intersting NPR article on the effects of ghrelin on metabolism
A study found that you were more satiated if you thought you were eating something indulgent than if you thought you were eating something low cal. The study participants' ghrelin levels and metabolism reacted differently just based on what they thought they were consuming, even though they all were actually consuming the same thing.

MKCMom got a reaction from TrailriderJulia in Do you do it ? the X word . EXERCISE !
Yes! 5 to 6 days a week. I walk 3 or 4 days a week and work out with a trainer two days a week. I few weeks ago, I pulled a muscle and had to take 10 days off and I felt sluggish and tired by the end of it.
I used to roll my eyes at those people that always said that exercising gave them energy, and now I am one of them!

MKCMom got a reaction from Ginger Snaps in Quest Protein Bars
I've seen people on this board talk about Quest Protein Bars and how good they are. I've even seen a few people say that, for them, these bars are a trigger food and that they couldn't keep them in the house; but I could never understand it. To me, Protein bars are the kind of food that you tolerate or choke down, but never one that you crave. Until this weekend, when I had my first Quest bar and now I get it. Those things are delicious and I could totally see myself over-eating them!

I work out with other people that will give me a hard time if I try to bail! I walk three mornings a week with a few friends and I work out with a trainer two mornings a week. I run with my daughter on Sundays. All of those people have permission to harass me if I try to cancel, and they do!
That worked to get me started. Now I look forward to it and feel icky on the days I skip my workout.

I am two months post-op and 4 of my 5 scars are faded enough that they don't look new. They are still visible, but don't jump out at you. I do have one that took longer to heal and it is still fairly visible and red. I think there is no way to predict how they will heal.
How exciting to meet a great guy! If the relationship progresses, you will need to tell him at some point, but I don't know that he needs to know right now. I also kept my surgery private; only my husband knows.

So today I hit the 70 pound lost mark! Exciting huh? That's about the weight of a 4th grader. Well, this is about the 4th time I've hit that mark. The other 3 times I hit a plateau, got frustrated, long story short, I ended up gaining all of it back with an extra 50 pounds. So I declare war on the 4th grader and I'm going to bust through this curse this time and make it history! Onward and downward!!

MKCMom got a reaction from Denise73 in Alcohol and the Social Drinker
I work in an office that definitely likes its alcohol. We even have a conference room with a liquor cabinet. But, I decided that I would avoid alcohol until I get to goal. In addition to the calories in the alcohol, after a drink or two, I like to eat junk-- more calories. I don't miss the drinking nearly as much as I thought I would.
When people ask what I am doing to lose weight (I kept my surgery private), I tell them that cutting out alcohol is part of my program. Nobody has batted an eye. My surgeon said no alcohol for 3 months post-op, and I do plan to starting drinking once in a while after I get to goal. I'll figure out my 'rules' for that when I get there.

I am 7.5 months post op and down 116.4 pounds! I started to get discouraged today because as the numbers get smaller, you don't see those huge changes in your body from month to month. So I thought maybe I should remind myself of where I've started & where I am. I shot this pic after my work out :-)

I also got oral thrush a few days post-op. I took a probiotic (which also helped with diarrhea) and gargled with apple cider vinegar. 2 tablespoons in a cup of Water and swish and gargle twice a day. My thrush cleared up in about two days with the vinegar.

MKCMom reacted to MichiganChic in Has weight loss surgery made you rethink your career?
I didn't change careers, but I did get a much better job in my field. I now work in a place where I am treated with respect, and they appreciate me. At my old job, they took me for granted, and thought nothing of treating me poorly compared to peers. And I am not paranoid - others saw it, too. Of course I'll never be able to prove it was weight related, but I think it was.
Interestingly, I made up my mind that I needed out of that job, and even though my resume was and is stellar, I figured it would be hard to get a potential employer to see past my weight. I also figured that even if they did, they wouldn't pay me what I was worth. So, I had the surgery, let the old employer pay for it and all my recovery time, started giving no more than 8 hours a day, and focused on me. I lost the weight and gained a lot of confidence. When a headhunter contacted me, I was in a much better physical and mental place where I felt I could go after a bigger/better/great job and negotiate a fitting salary. I've been there about 6 months now, have lost another 40 pounds since I started, and love the job! I feel like the sleeve gave me that.
