Have been same weight 3 days so figure I have to keep tricking my body. Other than Vitamins, eating almost nothing except Protein and a bit of low-cal dairy.
Clearly, my body believes this is Armageddon and is rallying to save me. Yesterday I took a long bike ride and today I swam for the first time since surgery. Eventually, it will be reflected in my weight but I can tell I've lost inches.
I told my husband it would be ironic is I did lose a bunch of weight and then, some day, need that fat in some post-disaster situation...

It took me three days, and 5 meals, to get through one grilled chicken and veggie kabob and that included sharing with the dog! I think I'm a little tired of chicken now...

Those things are permanently off the list. There is no nutritional value in corn, noodles, rice potatoes, chips, taco shells for our small tummies. Protein first. It has more seity and will stick with you. Avocado is really fattening and to be eat very sparingly. Lettuce in salad fills tummy but not with what it needs-protein!!!

hrhlaurie got a reaction from HumanMerelyBeing in THIS is how the first 4 weeks go...
I'm at 2.5 weeks out and really hovering between feeling great and a sudden loss of energy that knocks me back. I don't have pain and never used a heating pad or slept in the recliner but did have an extra pillow to hug to me for the first week while I slept.
My doc and nut had me off liquids after a week and on to mush but I keep having to dial myself back when I feel really good and do too much, eat too much, etc.
Working from home has been the biggest benefit in helping me recover and work. I have a lengthy commute and can't afford to suddenly be drained of energy when driving.
Good summary on the first month though. Early days are iffy and then OK and I look forward to hitting the one month mark!

My dietician says if you get to the point where you are eating food and you have a bite of cookie or something it doesnt defeat your whole diet. Have the bite, enjoy it, and put it behind you. She said the mistake is in telling yourself that now you've ruined your diet so might as well have more. We tend to not forgive ourselves.
I agree that some foods are worse for me than others. More than likely I will not eat white bread items, Bagels, tortillas, Pasta or white rice because Protein first and all that. If I do have a bite of Pasta, I don't consider it to be a step down a slippery slope. I would hope that these months of eating discipline will provide me with a solid foundation of habits. However, I'm not an emotional eater and haven't had any head hunger. I was a great white shark eater, mindlessly grazing on what came across my path to feed my bottomless pit of a stomach without thinking much about it. No stomach, no hunger for me now. My hardest habit to break will be sloth - coming home from office job and 60 min commute and not collapsing on the couch, but that's a problem for a different thread!

Just to be clear, ive lost 14 pounds in the two weeks since surgery. In March I hit my high weight and had a bit of a panic diet prior to my 6th month dr appt. I managed to lose 10 pounds by April and then I lost another 10 pounds from April to May in preop diet. 34 total still makes me a happy camper!

I'm so glad if any of this has helped at all. Sharing my daily activities, my health info and, for crying out loud, my WEIGHT has been beyond bizarre! However, the one thing that helped me navigate the murkiness of a life-changing surgery were the personal stories, advice, good, bad, pain, eating, fears, eating experiences and more that everyone shared with me and other total strangers on this board. We're all united in this journey and should do what we can to help each other but keep in mind that our experiences may differ greatly. I don't know if it's due to our surgeons, anatomy, meds, life experiences or a combination of them but knowledge is power and the more you know, the more prepared you will be.
My pain was up and down after surgery and for me, the nausea was the far worse experience. I took the patch behind the ear, told the anesthesiologist to do what he could to minimize the nausea, took all nausea and pain medication they could give me and figured the rest of the post surgery steps would follow. Today I didn't take a pain pill at all but I will when I go to sleep. My stitches itch like mad now, all I do is scratch around them and I may need benedryl or something. However, I sneezed today and almost had no pain, a victory there since I was fearing coughs, sneezes or hiccips for the past week!
So, from those first days in the hospital, when they lined up plastic 2 oz cups filled with Water and encouraged me to work my way through them to less than a week later I'm drinking several ounces at a time, along with 3 Protein shakes and Vitamins, to today when I had my first pureed food and am learning all over again what to eat. Think of this journey as a sort of bunny hop through the steps, a couple of hops forward, a couple of hops back, and several more steps forward again. Just as I got the hang of drinking Protein Shakes, now I'm figuring out the mushy and pureed food process, hop, hop, hop...
Today I had a strawberry banana Protein shake with additional Protein Powder added to it for Breakfast. I had about 20 ounces flavored water and then set the kitchen timer for 30 minutes and planned lunch, which was 2 -3 Tbsp of high Protein yogurt. Even though I ate with a baby spoon, out of a pre-measured container, much stomach gurgling during this meal kept me eating slowly. I ate slow, listened to my stomach, and stopped before the container was empty. Once done, I set the timer, and then started drinking my Water again. Next meal, 2 Tbsp of a mix of mashed banana and ceeamy Peanut Butter. Same eating process and gurgling results. Again, I stopped before the container was empty. Kind of an interesting process but I got in my liquids and Vitamins. I guess I'm supposed to be tracking calories and protein and stuff but I'm just going to get the hang of the food eating first and then talk to my Nut next week and let her tell me what to track.
I'm feeling good and optimistic and even planning to walk with my daughter in Walk for Life tomorrow. Can't wait to swim and ride my bike again!
I think I'll stick with shakes for Breakfast for awhile, have a few small meals during the day, and keep each one at 2 Tbsp each and high protein. Oh yeah, and I'm down 10 pounds since surgery 8 days ago. 10 pounds, is that the size of a watermelon? 10 pounds is cool! I've lost a total of 30 since my high weight this past March. 30 pounds is like a whole toddler or something, right! Again, I say cool!

Thanks, I'm going out to pick up a few things tomorrow so I'll look for some. My Nut recommended a probiotic also, which I can take more safely than mirilax. Whole Foods, here I come!

Saw my Nut today. Water and Vitamins all good but Protein low and need to step up my exercise to more than 20 -30 mins walking a day. Today I went out on my bike and it feels more like the kind of exercise I enjoy.
Took granddaughter to lunch today at Noodles where she had my former favorite, mac and cheese and I ordered a side of pork loin. We came home and I ate some meat wrapped in a piece of swiss cheese but couldn't more than 3/4ths of it.
Went to dinner with friends and I ordered a side of grilled shrimp. When the plate came, it was so much I had to laugh because there were so many. I ate 4 med shrimp with my knife and fork taking tiny bites and chewing well and my husband ate the rest of the shrimp with his steak. Being in a restaurant isn't hard and the food at the table didn't affect me but I didn't drink any Water at all when I got there because I thought my food would get to the table within 30 minutes. But, my husband had an appetizer and it took awhile to order so I went without drinking over 45 mins and I was so thirsty so hardest part of eating out is judging time it takes to get food! Then just as my 30 mins were up and I could drink again after eating, everyone was ready to leave so I took a couple of drinks of my water and was glad that my new habit is to always carry a bottle of water with me!
I wasn't sure how I'd do with grilled shrimp, but they were good and settled well. I knew to stop when the gurgling and hiccups started which is good since it's hard to measure food when you're out.

Rode my bike today, so much fun and great exercise!
Went to lunch at Noodles and ordered a side of pork loin, could have also chosen chicken or shrimp. Took it home and wrapped some in a piece of swiss cheese but could only eat three quarters of it. My dog appreciates my new small tummy!
Going to dinner tonight with friends at a mexican rest. I know there will be a side of something I can eat. Feelin good!
