Lapband recipes Hints – “BANDSTER SIZE PORTIONS”

When I make most of the recipes I prepare them ahead of time and bake them in large muffin tins.

Once the meal is cooked in the muffin tins (for example Shepherds Pie, meatloaf, steel cut oats, etc.)... I freeze them in the tins... then pop them out and put them in small zip lock baggies in individual portions.

Make sure you spray the muffin tins with non-stick cooking spray.

When I make things like Wendy’s Chili, Soups, or Pasta I freeze them in plastic single serving containers (perfect size band portion).

Below is a message that I've posted several times before but I think it's worth reposting for new bandsters.

I’m now entering my 8th year of being banded and have talked about this here several times but I think it’s worth repeating for new bandsters.

Try and take it one day at a time. Don’t compare yourself to others. Don’t go into this journey saying “I’ll never be able to eat this or that ever again.” I can eat ANYTHING except rice and apple skins and no carbonated beverages. Follow the guidelines given to you by your doctor. Remember… take tiny bites (the size of your pinky fingernail) and remember to finish what you have in your mouth before you take your next bite.

When I was losing weight I checked in every month with my family doctor to get weighed and measured. (I don’t own scales) I also attended three coffee groups for people that are banded. (I host them). These things really keep me motivated and on track. I still check in every month with my family doctor to get weighed-in and I host two coffee groups. For me support from fellow bandsters plays a big part in this journey.

Back when I was banded my family doctor and I came up with something called the “Egg Timer Distraction”. It’s kind of difficult to explain here but I’d be happy to email you the .pdf document. It REALLY helped me with “head hunger”. I can’t tell you the number of people in my lapband coffee groups over the years that have said how helpful this “trick” has been in dealing with their head hunger.

Also, I’m not really a “diet” book type person but I recommend you pick up two books.

Eat What You Love, Love What You Eat: How to Break Your Eat-Repent-Repeat Cycle – by Dr. Michelle May

I had the pleasure of hearing Dr. May speak at a conference when she came to Toronto and her book and guidelines really work well with the lapband journey.

    The second book is:

The End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Insatiable American Appetite – by David L. Kessler

Please feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions and also if you would like a copy of the “Egg Timer Distraction Document”. --- tomander@bell.net

Relax, relax. She's fine. What I mean by the topic title is that when I was at my son and daughter-in-law's house for Thanksgiving last night, I was talking to her mom and she he knows about the lapband so I had no issues discussing details with her. When she asked how much weight I had lost, I told her it was now around 95 lbs.
She said, 'really? Do you realize that's what Debbie weighs'. ...and suddenly I realized...OMG...I've been literally carrying around another person all this time. I know we often say of someone who has lost alot of weight that they're half their size and while I haven't actually lost half my size, I really have lost a whole person. And not just a 'virtual' person, but the person who was right in front of me cooking dinner.< /p>
What an amazing visual that was. I pictured carrying her around on my back and realized that was what I had done to myself. I'm proud of the loss yet truly disturbed by having gotten so heavy. In my head, I will keep a picture of me carrying Debbie on my back and hope that this will really help me if I find myself not being compliant in the future.
I think it will really help me to keep the weight off as that is my focus now.
PS: I hope everyone had a wonderful and successful day yesterday.

Princess - I had gastric bypass and am still on liquids however, I can eat yogurt and I notice with yogurt that I can eat the whole cup!! It takes me a little but I can do it - I've heard people call these slider foods. Some foods of down easier. I don't know the ins and outs of band patients, but I would think that it is more normal than not.

Hey. I had mine done 16 days ago, and I don't regret it for a second. I'm eating mushy food and it fills me up for so much much longer. I haven't been doing a lot of walking but work keeps me busy lol

Estrogen is stored in fat and it floods your system during rapid weight loss. I didn't have anger but sure felt the rollercoaster. It does level out but I think counselor and other suggestions are good.
I do want to comment on the idea that losing weight will make you happy. No. Losing weight will make you healthier, clothes fit better and confidence is boosted. However all your problems remain and you no longer have food and the fatsuit to shield and comfort you. NOW is the time to be tackling any underlying problems as they will get worse once u no longer numb yourself with food and layers of fat.
I AM happy overall but this has been an epic journey...

This whole is experience is an emotional roller coaster, it's good you recognise the problems and maybe seeing an individual or couples therapist may help. Your probably getting so angry through frustration with the stress, strain and your relationship with food. I hope you find your solution soon

Entire states aren't stopping the use of the band. Select surgeons are.
The reason so many surgeons are stopping use of the band is because of the high patient failure, not the high band failure. They're tired of removing and revising band patients- regardless of the cause. Only 5% of complications with the band are by no fault of the patient. Sadly, it seems a lot of patients go into this surgery totally ignorant to the facts of what is necessary to be successful with the band. Some are aware of the facts but choose to ignore them and misuse the band anyway. Because of this, they end up with a lot of slips and erosion as a result.
The next time you see a thread about someone throwing up for weeks or months, or intentionally having their band too tight, or chronically over eating? There's your reason for so many band complications. It's not the band it's the people totally misusing it.

    JF,
I understand your frustrations. However, it also feels like you are discouraged because either you had higher expectations (expected wl/month) or you are comparing results to others. 23 lbs in less than 3 months is pretty on par. Always aim for the healthy 8lb/month wl goal. This is a much more realistic goal and is much more achievable than the whopping 20+ losses some may experience (especially upfront).
I don't know why we get it in our heads that quicker loss is better- it's actually harmful to our bodies. I also struggle with understanding where and why we start expecting things we never accomplished preop. I think many of us buy into the extreme stories where someone loses 100 lbs in 3 months and we hope for the same results. But there's a huge spectrum of loss (in all 3 surgeries), the real goal- lose the excess weight. Keep to the rules, stay vigilent with food choices/portions and wl will follow.
I just wanted to chime in to say sometimes we need to focus on the mental obstacles as much as the physical ones. You'll get there, just keep going

Ok, ok... so let's forego the, 'Josh is an idiot comments'.... Keep in mind I'm 18 days post surgery. I was working on my car today and as I was laying on the ground stretching to reach the oil plug I felt a pop. Turns out I popped one of my incisions wide open.
Let this be a warning to all who think they don't need to take it easy after surgery!!
