Pre-op vets- I have a question for you
I stopped drinking diet soda four months before surgery and I watched what I ate and worked out and lost forty pounds. This number includes my two week liquid diet too. My surgeon required that I loose fifteen pounds before surgery to help reduce fatty liver. I would say that the majority of us have fatty livers and that's why we have to loose the weight prior to surgery to make it easier for the surgeon to do the surgery. I wish you the best of luck with your up coming surgery.

What aftercare do you guys get?
I had two week, one month, three months, six months and will at one year with both surgeon and nutritionist. After that yearly with both surgeon and nutritionist. At three months and six months I had blood work. No X-rays needed for I had no problems. I have the opportunity to contact them any time with problems or questions via phone or internet. I go monthly or bimonthly to support meetings run by the network of surgeons, nutritionists, therapists, physician assistants and other speakers. This group takes care of their patients very well.

5 weeks out
You're doing wonderful.... Don't be frustrated and don't worry because your on the right path to better health. You've been through a major surgery and your body is healing and it takes as I was told by my surgeon and nutritionist that it takes a year for the body to fully recover and heal inside. May I make the suggestion that you take pictures of yourself weekly and watch your progression appear before your eyes. Pictures are a great tool to watch your progression. Another thing you could do is take your measurements and keep a chart of your progression that way. You'll be amazed with at your results when you see them in the pictures and your chart.

Stomach growls
I make noises too. I think it's coming from the intestines too while processing things and move down the line so to speak. It usually doesn't hurt and sometimes loud like you said. I don't think it's anything just annoying at times. You're doing great keep up the good work.

Three months post op
You're doing incredible. You should be very pleased with yourself. If you are weighing yourself everyday DO NOT do that..... It's bad for your self image. Your nutritionist and surgeon would say the same thing. It's self defeating. If you are going to weigh yourself do it once a week on the same day at the same time wearing the same clothes. That's our lecture for today. LOL Keep going on the path you are on and everything will be fine.

What 2 expect on 2 week visit
I saw my surgeon before surgery and in the hospital. For my check ups I see the PA. She took care of checking me out at first check up. Then at three months, then at six months and don't go again until my one year check up. After the one year I will go to her every year to be checked up on. I also can contact her any time I have a problem or question. I also she the nutritionist on the same schedule. If I were you I would tell them you want to be seen for a follow up. Let us know what happens.

Negativity in Surgery Support Group Meetings
I just from the monthly Bariatric meetings I go to and it was very supportive. I've never have heard anyone being really negative about any of the surgeries they've had. I look forward to going every month and sometimes I go to a second one. So no problem here.

WLS
Anita, Try to relax about everything. Each test is done for reason. Your surgeon wants to make sure that you are in the best shape possible to do the surgery safely. When I did my surgery I was required to meet with my primary care physician four times over a three month period, then I had all the various tests to do at the same time. My first meeting with the surgeon was in May and my surgery was in September. I'm doing very well after the surgery. I had no complications from it. I follow everything that I was told to do to let myself heal properly. So follow the guidelines your surgeon and nutritionist give you and everything will be fine. The best of luck to you for your upcoming surgery.

Liquid diet
Follow what your surgeon says it's very important. The reason you have to do this is to reduce your liver for surgery to make it easier for the surgeon to get to your stomach. Remember that after surgery you will be on liquids for a few weeks to help your new sleeve to heal. Your sleeve is delicate and takes months for it to heal properly. I know this even though I had gastric bypass I was first preparing for the sleeve and didn't change procedures until two weeks before surgery. Please don't cut corners here you need to do this for everything to go right with surgery. I wish you the best with your upcoming surgery.

Pre-Op Question
Hi NieMarie, The endoscopy was one of the last things I did from my list of requiremenrs from the surgeon and insurance. For most people that list of requirements takes several months to do to get approval from their insurance company. I see from your message that your doing three of the requirements in one day and that's a lot to do in one day. I wish you the best in doing those. Didn't your surgeon give you a time frame of how long it would take to do everything required to get approved from insurance? What about your nutritional meetings don't you have those too? I'm just curious. I hope everything goes well for you and the best of luck with your surgery.

blood sugar
I took didn't watch my self and was on Victoza and metaformin at the same time. I went from an A1C of 8+ to under 7 before surgery. I haven't taken any diabetes meds since surgery and when my A1C was checked in March it was 4.7. So keep up the good work you are doing and you'll be amazed when your numbers come way down more. Good luck with your surgery.

Anyone else with this problem? 2 weeks post op tomorrow *embarrassing*
I suggest that you contact your doctor and tell them about it. The doctor is there for you when you are having problems or just questions. Drink as much as you can of Water so you don't have any problems with dehydration. It's possible that you could be reacting to dairy in your shakes. People have been known to have that problem after surgery. Again check in with your doctor so they can tell you what to do to combat the diarrhea.

Burping?
I'm sorry your having such a problem. I use Gas X strips that work faster then Gas X pills. They help me much faster with gas pains. If that doesn't work contact your surgeon and ask what they can do to help you. Feel better soon.

Protein drink
If you can't have milk based Protein drinks or powders you could try soy protein powders or Jay Robb makes an egg powder protein. I have not tried the Jay Robb egg Protein Powder but I have used other products from them and they are very good. You can get the Jay Robb at Whole foods, Amazon, directly from the company, or eBay. Good luck in finding something that works for you. Oh and you can mix your drinks with soy milk or almond sugar free milk.

Starting puree today.
Hi Scylla, Dr, Denham was my surgeon too. Who is your nutritionist? I had gastric bypass 7 months ago and am very pleased with it. I followed everything to a tee and still do. I wouldn't mess in eating something you shouldn't at this point because your stomach is very delicate and even if you think it's okay to try something you will do damage. If you have any questions at all or problems call Dr. Denham's office and talk to Liz and she will be a great help or call your nutritionist. If you belong to North Shore Connect even better to Contact him, Liz, or your nutritionist. Continued success to you.

Protein powders
You could try Torani sugar free syrups made with Splenda. They come in many, many flavors. You purchase them from World Market, directly from the company, Amazon, or eBay. They are really good.

Too soon
I would insist that he check you out or go to see your primary doctor and have them run tests to see if you did any damage. I really think your surgeon is not on the ball about this. If you can't get any relief from the pain meds then take a trip to the emergency room where they can start the process of finding out if everything is okay. Good luck.

is it a fart... nope, it's poop, adult diapers, really?
I had chronic diarrhea after surgery but I had that problem before surgery too. I had accidents a couple of times but I guess that I knew what was happening and got to the bathroom in time to go. I now only have it sometimes now but basically I'm fine. I do keep Imodium with me just in case while out. I also memorize where bathrooms are when out and about so if I need to go suddenly I can. The thing with your friend is rare and I think she should see her doctor about it right away. Take care and good luck with your surgery.

Post op success
I had surgery September 25, 2013 and I'm doing well. I've had no major issues except the dreaded problem with gas which comes with gastric bypass surgery. I have lost at least 97 lbs and counting. I don't weigh myself and my last weigh in was at the end of March so I might have lost more. I will get weighed again maybe in May but more likely not till the end of June when,I have my next doctors appointment. My eating is good for the most, part. I still can only eat small amounts of Protein so I have a Quest bar and a Protein shake everyday to supplement. That's all I can think of to say.

Surgery went well!

The dreaded dumping syndrome!
Hi, I use Jay Robb whey Protein powder that comes in chocolate, vanilla, strawberry and tropical. It has 25g of protein in it. You can purchase at Whole Foods, Amazon or eBay. It's not gritty and it's made with Stevia. I also add Torani sugar free syrup which is made with Splenda to it for added flavor. Torani sugar free syrups come in many flavors and you can purchase from the company, on Amazon or eBay. Premier shakes come in vanilla, chocolate and strawberry at costco. I use Fage 0% plain Greek yogurt and Costco has it in 3 lb containers since you use it in cooking too for your family. The fruit flavors have to much sugar. I forgot that if you want to try Jay Robb whey Protein Powder Whole Foods carry the individual packets to sample it. I also used unjury chicken broth to help get in my protein because it has 20g of protein in each serving I hope that you feel better and it will all improve.

Question...?
It bothers me also. I don't think that these people should be broadcasting what they are doing and making light of it. Especially the ones that say they are still losing weight. I think they have a lot of nerve doing this on this board. They are not setting a good example for the rest of us that try really hard to stick with our proper eating. Shame on them.
