Random.. About blood clots
They will check your blood counts prior to surgery, and if there is any reason to be concerned, they won't proceed. A bruise does not indicate any problem with clotting, unless you suddenly notice you bruise easily or are covered in bruises for apparently no reason. I'm sure you will be fine.

One Last Drink
It always sends off warning bells in my head when I hear things like this. It means that alcohol is pretty important to you, and you may have trouble with it when you can no longer "use" food. Please be aware!! You might blow off this post, and think, "alcohol is not a problem for me." If that is the case, it should not be a problem to give it up.

Abdominal pain 3 weeks post-op?
As long as you have had the pain since the surgery, and it didn't start suddenly after a period of not having it....does that make sense? Pain after surgery should steadily decrease. Any sudden or new pain after you have been successfully healing may be cause for alarm.

Substance abuse issues and VSG
I am a recovering addict, and my drug of choice is opiates. I have over 3 years clean and in recovery, and this was a concern of mine as well. I am more concerned with taking pain medication, since I haven't taken anything for over 3 years, and will have to while in the hospital (im assuming). I am not planning on taking any narcotics home on prescription. Once i'm discharged from the hospital, that is it for the pain meds. I have a support system of people also in recovery and I still go to meetings regularly. I also attend weekly bariatric support groups. I'm not sure what makes you think it's your business to tell your friend he is or is not ready to have wls. I would be pretty annoyed if one of my friends, who is not an addict or expert in addiction, tried to tell me I am not ready for the surgery. As long as your friend is running his decisions by someone he trusts, just try to be supportive. He may actually be in a better position to deal with the long term consequences of wls, since he knows he has addictive behaviors and can take steps to deal with them. I think a lot of people get blind sided by the aftermath of wls, and realizing their relationship with food was addictive. Many of these people turn to alcohol or other substances to cope with their feelings. I am not sure exactly what I'm trying to say here, but this post really annoyed me.

Just Starting Out!

3 Days post op
what you "feel" and what you are able to or supposed to do are not the same thing. Part of using the vsg successfully is complying with your surgeon's instructions. They didn't do surgery on your brain, although undoubtedly most of us could have used it.

Sleeve surgery
I got tired of being fat and invisible. I'm still young, and used to turn heads. I really miss that. Like the poster above, I am one of those 'healthy' fat ppl (no comorbs). So, although health was a good motivator for me, at first it was mostly vanity.

Breaking up protein?
http://www.marksdailyapple.com/dear-mark-how-much-protein-can-you-absorb-and-use-from-one-meal/#axzz2gjZamnkx It is much more complicated, and depends on body composition, activity level and what you're mixing your Protein with. It's a good read.

Alcohol calories and working out
my surgeon says he'd rather his patients eat butter than consume alcohol. ever.
