    Anyone on here in Kansas?

I used St Lukes South in Overland Park. Dr. Slayden. It was well worth it and I have not had any regrets. I would be lying if I told you I was not nervous too, when I had the surgery. Coming up on one year post op, But again for me it was well worth it and the whole team was very supportive.

    Help with Protein 'shots'

I like isuchick4, use the nectar. Not sure if GNC sells it but Vitamin shoppe has it in stock if there is a Vitamin Shoppe where you are at. After surgery I did not really have a desire for milk, so all my protien I mix with Water. nice thing about nectar is it has no carbs or sugar. I recently got the cappucino and mix it with decaf coffee.

    Very light headed and dizzy

May want to check with your surgeon. Just a thought though, are you getting enough water?
  6. Hi Fostermama, I did get approved and was sleeved. The pulmonary embolsim happened about a month after the surgery, plus dvt. But I have not had any complications since the surgery and so far am very happy I made the decision.
  7. Thanks those all sound great. I cant do chike, tried it once, before the surgery and got hives :-)
  8. For those who love coffee and have a hard time with getting their protien shakes in. I had a hard time with protien shakes after surgery. i had read about Syntrax nectar, the company is now owned by Bariatric Advantage. So I tried the caribbean cooler and it was a bit to sweet for me but very doable. Back to yesterday and my trip to the Vitamin shoppe. They had a wide variety of the Syntrax Nectar. They had both sample size and the big tubs. I got the Cappuccino and also the choclate. I took about 8oz of decaf coffee and one scoop of the cappuccino and mixed it in a blender. End result it taste pretty good if you like those international delight cappuccino mix. It is 100 calories and 23 grams of protien. Plus it is a no sugar and no carb mix. Also the chocolate was very good.
  9. Not sure about prior to surgery so it may be the same procedure where you stop for a few days prior. I was not on blood thinners prior to surgery, but after surgery they did use an injectable blood thinner not lovenox but another. As far as after surgery, there should not be an issue with blood thinners. I actually had ended up with blood clots in my legs and lungs about a month after surgery resulting in using lovenox and warfarin. I will be on the warfarin for about another 4 months, so there does not appear to be an issue with blood thinners. As always please follow up with your surgeon and family dr or specialist.

    Tips for a newbie runner

Lot of great posts. I love running, have ran my whole "fat" life. When I was getting ready to do my first marathon I got a book that I loved. It is called Galloway's Book of Running. It had a lot of awesome information. From a personal perspective, I only noticed this after running a long time, I am a shuffler so I dont actually lift my feet of the ground that high, so I was not using a pounding type action or bend my knees to much. This is what really saved my knees I think as my stride was a bit differnt than "normal runners" :-) Does it get easier? You betchya as long as you enjoy it. I think and again just my humble opinion, the secret to fitness is to find something you like and don't think of it as exercise but it just becomes another habit you love and don't want to live without. One of the things I use to do was while walking, I would walk for about 5 minutes, then pick a spot and jog to it. Slowly decreasing my walk time and increasing my run time. The C25k I think uses the same type of principle, walk and jog building you up to eventually running the full time. For shoes I agree a specialty running store is great. I use mizuno beast because my feet are pretty wide and they come in a wider shoe plus they are built for heavier runners. Good luck on your journey.

    advice please

I was in a similiar situation. My surgery was Dec 10th just before all the Christmas and New Years parties. Did not tell anyone until after surgery. When they wanted to discuss it I explained I had thought about it for a couple years and tried several alternatives along the way. Finally this seemed to be the best choice for my health moving forward. They seem pretty receptive and even if they arent thats ok with me, you can please some of the people some of the time but not all of the people all the time :-)

    Hungry

If you are good thru the day. What if you moved your 4th meal later in the evening? Also may want to add more Water since you are exercising so much. Just a thought.
  14. May want to let your Doctor know. The program I went through advised taking a stool softner if you had not gone in 72hrs. If that did not work he wanted to know. I did not go for the first 72hrs.
  15. wow great recipe. Will have to give it a try later this week. I got cleared for "real food" last month. Fortunately I love chicken and fish so I use that as my main protien of choice :-) I do marinade both using Ponzu which I got at Walmart, it is a citrus based soy sauce which had lower sodium than the low sodium soy sauce. At the local oriental market it comes in lemon or lime. I then use mustard and coate the chicken or fish with it then take Mrs Dash any flavor you have a liking to and then sprinkle that over the mustard. If you want a little crust they do have Panko bread crumbs and I think they may even make a low carb bread crumb and lightly coat the chicken or fish with that. Bake at 350 for about an hour. With Spring upon us instead of baking I will use the grill.

    Gout

Hi not sure how bad your gout is. I suffer gout episodes, usually start on one foot on the big toe then is the most painful thing after it is done it moves to the next foot. I don't have them often and when I did I alway's got Knudsens Just Black Cherry choice and this redued the pain by about 50 to 60%. The content in cherries and other fruits I think like blueberries breaks up the crystalized purine that forms. About a year ago I spoke with my doctor and started taking allpurinol and have not had any major issues. Sorry for the long story, to make it short, I had the sleeve in December and knock on wood and a lot of prayers have not had any big flare ups. I think you definately want to discuss with the Dr prior to surgery since it is my understanding purine is high in protien from meat sources. So an alternative is to look at plant sources. But and I am no expert, the amount of any of the protien we consume is quite a bit reduced from when we did not have the sleeve, having half to three quarters of a chicken strip vs two chicken breast would have a lot less purine :-) The biggest issue with gout is moving after surgery. You want to be sure to keep those legs, toes and feet moving to keep circulation going and prevent clots. Good luck
  17. Glad to see everything worked out fine. I did end up in the hospital via the ER. I spent about 5 days and will be following up with the Pulmonary Dr. as well as my Cardiologist. Most likely I will be on blood thinners for awhile. It is a setback, but I like to look at the positive, thanks to them I am able to reply to the post :-)
  18. Just my two cents. I think you should call the Dr. and explain the pain. Make sure you are active keep your legs and feet moving. The reason I bring this up and I realize my situation is differnt then yours, is I felt great the first two weeks after surgery and then thought I had a respiratory issue, turned out I ended up with clots in my legs and my lungs. Again, not trying to be an alarmist, just think this early always good idea to run certain things by the dr.

    Seriously.... Gout!?

I too suffered gout prior to vsg surgery. I use to get 100% black cherry juice. Knudson is the brand I use to get. I had read about the remedy on a gout specific blog and that it breaks down the purine crystals that form. I would drink quite a bit and noticed about a 70% less pain. It would work wonders. However, now with a smaller stomach it may be harder to get the amount of juice needed. Also for gout they say to use heat not ice but you may want to check some gout specific sites. I now take allpurinol which is specific for gout. My flare ups use to last a couple weeks.
  20. Hi danielledalton , My surgery was on 12/10/13. First two weeks were great. I just started weeks 3-5. I was really doing well last week then all of a sudden I am really lethargic also have a hard time sleeping at night. I just follow the food guide in our books they gave us. Recently this week I have really had a hard time scheduling the meals with the protien and the Water. I am hoping this is just a phase and I need to readjust my schedule. Food wise, I have pureed some hamburger which goes ok. I stick with cottage cheese, pureed fruit. Had some tuna and crackers that seemed to go down ok. T

    Walking Post-Op

Congrats, I think that is awesome. I am sure a lot of the vets on the site may have better insight. I get sleeved tomorrow. I have been reading everything and anything for the past 6 months. The program I am on wants us to start walking after the surgery, and work up to a mile. I get the impression there is no magical number but to get out and get moving to help aide in the healing process.
  22. HI, I am using insurance. I am in my two week pre phase diet and it is hitting me that I am really getting this done. My famiy physician had said she heard lots of positive for the group he is with. I am in that dreaded mind game stage where I am questioning if I should be going through with it. Deep down I know it is the right choice.
