StarryNightSky reacted to Dooter in Two Years out: LISTEN UP NOOBS AND SEEKERS! *warning-harsh*
Hey all- Dooter here. I haven't been on here in a while, but this thought has been plaguing me, and I need to get it out. -Let me preface this discussion by saying I am GLAD I had the sleeve surgery, and I would not change it for the world. I had NO complications and I lost 102 pounds in eight months, and for that I am grateful. I needed to do that quickly for my own sanity and health. HOWEVER- that said-
DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT think for one teeny tiny minute that having surgery and dumping a bunch of weight is going to fix your head and the behavior that got you here. Not gonna happen. During the "honeymoon" period where you can sneeze off five pounds at a time and you're never hungry after your teaspoon of food, you can't imagine EVER returning to old feelings and desires. I am here to tell you that it sneaks back in a little at a time. A taste here, a taste there... "oh look. I've gained a pound. well, that was salty food, I'll just drink more Water tomorrow." HORSE HOCKEY!!!! That's where it starts. Your old head trips creep in. Hiding food. Eating junk now, figuring you'll just shape up "next week" or "tomorrow." Tomorrow never happens and you've gained 30 pounds back. Yes. With your itty bitty stomach, you have gained 30 pounds back. It can happen. Or worse, you gain it all back. That can happen too.
The reason I am writing this and being to harsh about it is that you are a person who is considering, or who has gone through a MAJOR life changing surgery. SO CHANGE YOUR LIFE!!!! Be vigilant. come out of that honeymoon with your armor on! You WILL stop losing at one point and your body will begin to fight you as mine has. The diet my surgeon gave me no longer works at this point in the game, as my metabolism is stuck in cold molasses and it has taken a personal trainer/dietitian to get it moving again, and it is majorly hard work and painful and distasteful at times, but I have another 100 lbs to lose AFTER the 30 lb regain is gone.
Have somebody close to you hold you accountable for exercising and eating right. Splatter it all over Facebook if you have to (I did) so you'll have MANY people holding you accountable! Do what you have to do to reach your goal. Don't settle for less and don't eat crap. And don't think that surgery is the final solution. It's a tool that will get you halfway there. The rest is up to YOU and no one else. Thank you. That is all.

Glad to hear you are doing well!!
This is my second week of my four week pre op diet (surgery is August 16th) and I'm doing okay. Sometimes I fantasize about food lol or I will try and convince myself that I can run out for just one meal and I still have two weeks until my surgery to do just liquids but I have resisted.
On the bright side my house is VERY clean

Most of my friends are super thin naturally, even after having kids. I think they honestly just don't understand the battle. Hopefully they will come around. My husband for one is being very supportive, thank goodness!

Before going for VSG I went to medical weightloss and felt that I was going to be paying money for what I already new how to do (eat low carbs small meals veggies and protein)but my will power was too weak I couldn't keep it up. So, I decided to save my money for the plane ticket instead to get the surgery very happy and satisfied with vsg surgery.

As I am beginning my journey to getting the Gastric Sleeve I had someone ask me what the difference was from having a Gastric Sleeve verses taking an appetiate suppressant and just eating less. I know I was asked this because not long ago I did a medical weight loss program for 5 months and lost 50 pounds but ended gaining it back and then some. I had no idea how to reply except to repeat the information I learned in the seminars I went to. But this conversation really got me down and had me asking myself why can't I just loss the weight that way am I crazy to be on this journey to a gastric sleeve. I am 5'3 327 pounds and I know I need to lose the weight and I am committed to making my sleeve work but if I am committed to that why can't I do it without it.

Being 66 yrs old and obese since 5 yrs old I know diets. Any diet that came along I have tried. In my teens I got what was thin for me between 140-150 lbs. as soon as I got pregnant I ballooned up to 200 and has been a struggle my whole life. I am a CARBOHOLIC and continue to be one. I am 7 months sleeved and down 72 lbs. could I have done this without surgery, NO WAY! As a diabetic on mega amounts of insulin I gained another 25 lb in 2 yrs. I had to do something and the sleeve was it. I can eat anything at this point but I can not gorge myself. I can not eat a sleeve of Cookies or a pint of ice cream anymore, thank God. I am still on insulin but only a 1/5 of what I was on. Only take it once a day instead of 4 times a day and my A1C is much improved. Sorry this is so long but I got carried away.

Well, if it were that easy, most of us would be a lot thinner. For me, my trouble is that I had no will power. Every meal time was like putting a feed bag over a horses head and I was going to town! I kept eating until I felt like I had a food coma. I am not sure why it happened, but it did. All of the diets I went on didn't work for a variety of reason, many of which lead me to go on a huge binge eating whatever it was that I couldn't allow. Weight Watcher's allowed me to have whatever I wanted but with my hectic schedule I couldn't always track my food and would end up eating over my points.
After the sleeve, I am physically forced to stop eating because I feel full much sooner... so in a sense I can still go to town eating, but I wont eat nearly as much as I used to. Additionally, Since some of the ghrelin has been removed and some is produced by the pancreas, so far I have better control and will power to stop when needed so I don't eat until stuffed.
