I would let your surgeon know that she is dragging his practice down! He doesn't want that kind of review on his business and he will probably talk with her.

You know when I first read this that was my first thought. God knows the number of hairs on our head. I believe we came onto this earth with a predetermined date and we will leave with a predetermined date. I am a saved believing christian and I know that God already knew my walk on this earth including this surgery. So I will keep the faith and lose weight with a smile on my face.

One of the primary reasons I decided to get sleeved is that I'm currently watching my mom die from pancreatic cancer. I know obesity, high blood sugar, etc contributes to the horrible disease, so I wanted to take control of my health before it's too late. I also did a lot of research and still think the benefits outweigh (pun intended!) the other 'possible' consequences.
Good health to all of you.

I just looked it up and the partial gastrectomy that is discussed as having a higher liklihood of getting pancreatic cancer is the kind tht is done to relieve peptic ulcers. The stomach is cut differently and the duodenum is affected, unlike vsg. Also, peptic ulcers could ACTUALLY be the causal factor and the surgery's invasiveness could have accelerated the issue. Not related to vsg imho. My bff's mom died f pancreatic cancer and her doctor specifically said it was probably due to her smoking....

Don't take this the wrong way but sometimes a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
No one risk factor alone will cause cancer. Not even smoking. As someone with a lot more than a layman's grasp of how it works and I have to disagree with your interpretation of studies that deal mostly with either total gastrectomy or peptic ulcer surgery (both for alleviation of peptic ulcers - a very nasty condition to live with).
I looked at that case report someone mentioned above and I think it's pretty clear VSG did NOT cause his cancer to develop. Pancreatic cancer is very, very slow growing and hard to detect until it has advanced. It does not develop 3 months after a surgery, which was when he was diagnosed.
Don't sweat the remote possibilities. Think about how you are taking steps [including this surgery] to not succumb to more real threats - heart disease, diabetes, and the rest of the horrid obesity related diseases.

I agree I did find some info about that but I took the info to mean that the ulcers from H pylori increased this risk not the gastrectomy. Calming down now !

I agree. I don't take this lightly either BUT have you heard all if the ongoing side effects and risks from a lot of the medication we take. REALLY? We are/were killing ourselves daily by eating poorly and abusing this temple of our body. Be comfortable with your decision. The way I see it, I am a spiritual/religious person and when God is ready for me, he'll take me.

This is one topic that is completely foreign to me.. I still love EVERYTHING about food.. Shopping for it, preparing it, eating it... the vibrant colors of the produce, the interesting textures/colors of bags and bags of legumes and grains, the smell of sweating onions with garlic and ginger..... ZOMG! When I'm not eating food or thinking about what I'm going to cook, I'm watching food porn. If anything I enjoy food EVEN MORE than pre-sleeve because I can eat so little of it, I try to make it more special. Also the little bit of food tends to be a bit more calorie rich. Tonight's two teeny tiny chicken fajitas on homemade 4" round corn tortillas were SMOTHERED in an entire ounce of cheese. So rich and decadent... and completely within my calories! I love that I'm able to focus on the tastes now rather than worrying about how to fill my enormous belly!
Yes, I do still eat things like a Protein shake or half a cup of cottage cheese just to get in my Protein and I guess I feel "neutral" about these meals but I try to make sure that at least one of my daily meals is something exciting to my palate.

Yep I'm 8 weeks out today, and that is EXACTLY how I would describe it now -- I just don't enjoy eating. It feels very bizarre too, because my ENTIRE frickin life I adored eating. So....I'm actually quite happy because that's what I signed up for. I didn't want food to rule me like that one second more. But it is a very strange thing to experience......this "meh" feeling about food. So unlike me!
So Laura-ven says the enjoyment will come back.........I just don't want it to ever ever ever be like it was before!

So today I stepped on the scale and I have officially lost 30 pounds and I am six weeks post op. I am very happy with my progress so far. Tomorrow I am heading to Key West and am determined that I will not gain any weight
while I am there. My daughter n law has a gastric bypass and is going also. So I will have partner in crime to help make the correct decisions. I am a little concerned with the heat and humidity down there and staying hydrated so I will keep a bottle of Water with me at all times.

I'm not really pleased with how the program at Wash U is starting out, in that you apply, then wait 2 weeks for a reply on whether you get an invite to a seminar. I called them and pushed the issue today, told them I don't want to waste 2 weeks waiting if the answer is no. She said my invite went out today, yay! I don't know when the seminar is, but when I do learn the price, I'll post it. I've heard that some docs discount for self pay.

thank you guys. I do know that theres a very good chance I'll be a slow loser even with the sleeve. Realisitically I cant say I wont ever get disappointed at a stall, but Ill know that Im on the right track so itll be a bit easier (I think) to stay positive. Im ok with working out and eating well. As long as its actually doing something. Because right now it isn't. And I am coming off the adipex. I see my DR next month so I will be discussing with him whether I wean or I can just come right off. I have a few months of this process left so I should be ok to have them out of my system by the time I see a surgeon. Right now Im still jumping through insurance hoops so itll be a while before I get the sleeve done., I guess I just got sick of waiting. I feel like im in a fatty limbo. I know Im going to do something about it, but I have to wait. So I guess I thought I could drop some decent weight while I was waiting. Oh well. Anyway thanks for all the input guys I appreciate it!!

I completely understand your frustration and I feel for you. This forum will help you a lot! I believe
you need to trust and have faith in the process. My story and most of the people on here is the same as yours. If we could have easily lost weight and controlled our food addictions we wouldn't have needed the help. I bet we have all tried more diets than we have fingers to count them on. I was not fortunate enough to have my insurance pay for mine. I was a self pay. I would suggest to you that you stick this out and work with the insurance company. I do believe the sleeve will allow you to lose weight and allow you to be a happier person. Stick it out and see what happens. I don't think your BMI will stop you from having the surgery. Please keep us posted!!

I am originally from St.Louis and live in Florida now. Wash U has always been a fantastic place to go for anything. They have a stellar reputation. I was a self pay also I had to go to Boca Raton and I paid $10,500 and this was all inclusive. Thought I would give you a starting point for comparison.
    Good luck to you!!
