My exercise schedule has been thrown by my poor sick son and I'm worried I'll get what he has.
I repeated Week 7 day 2 on Monday night (I think it was Monday...) and I've just been taking care of my very unhappy boy since then. Not sure if I'll get out this weekend at all, but the monkey comes first!

First day running, walked 5 minutes at 2.8 MPH, 20 min. alternations running at 3.5 for 1 min. then 2.8 for 1 min., then 5 min. at 2.8 MPH. Had knee replacement 2 years ago so have to be careful. Also did 1 hour of Water aerobics in deep end of pool with a class. Not on any anti inflammatory so actually, I'm proud of what I did. Haven't run since I chased grand-kids when they were little and the oldest is 15 now. LOL!!

My newest high tech running shoes. Yes they are made for running. No they don't hurt my feet...they actually help strengthen my feet and lower leg muscles and allow them to work the way mother nature intended.
For those of you runners wearing highly cushioned motion control shoes and/or orthotics, I highly recommend you read the book "Tread Lightly." It's a great history of the development of running shoes, and the (lack of) science behind them.

Got outside and ran today. I used mapmyrun and found a great 5k route to work on but my run was pretty weak. I'm sure I got in 25+ minutes of running, but not all at once. I took a couple of nice walk breaks but at least I got my fanny out there, right?
I really need to find sources of potassium. I had three bags put in my post-op and I never get close to what myfitnesspal indicated I need of a daily basis. I just blended a banana into my Protein Shake for lunch and should try to get a coconut Water in me daily, but what else? I can't stomach V8.

Week 2 day 1 was last night. New shoes felt great. Still doing a lot of self talk - like you can do this! Good work, keep up this pace, etc.
Next week I will go to the class, but as am having a breast biopsy 2 days prior, no running. I can walk, so I plan to walk fast - and as soon as I am cleared to run I will do week 3 on my own.
Never in my life would have thought I would EVER feel disappointed when someone told me I could not run. What a shift in mindset.......

W4D2 was accomplished this morning. I seemed to be more relaxed with the last two runs then the first two. Hoping I will eventually find my "mojo" and be able to relax with the whole run!

You guys are all doing great. The big payoff is going to be that day when you can just take off for a run with no thought to distance or time. Just run as far as you want, whatever makes you happy. There will be a time very soon when you all will be running down a trail, thinking about your life and your weight loss, family, friends...and you'll realize you're not thinking at all about running. You're just doing it. It's a great feeling. Keep it up everybody.

Wow! Everyone here is so motivating and encouraging. I love checking in and reading everyone's posts. Had a good weekend of biking with the hubs and this morning I started Week 4 Day 1. I was a little apprehensive about the 5 min run but I told myself that I was defeating myself before I even attempted. So, I told my innerself to SHUT UP and just get off my a$$ and DO IT! And I did do it!! I am super proud of myself for not quitting before I even started. That is more of a mental breakthrough then a physical for me.
    Happy running everyone.

Thread's too long to read from the beginning so I will just "jump in". I am 46 and was sleeved dec 6, 2012. I was sleeved one month before my 46th birthday. I have lost almost 40 lbs and so happy I made this choice. There's no stopping me now! I will live a long healthy mid life and enjoy my grand babies to the fullest!

What I say to people who think they have to be perfect to start running is don't wait, start now and do the best you can a little bit better each time. This response is not directed at you lessofmeismore, but your response prompted me to share.
I do not tell too many folks, but I was afraid of running due to a long term foot injury that will never be fully repaired. You see, I got in a terrible car accident 3 years ago (other driver t boned me at 60 MPH at an intersection- they ran light) and broke my arms, legs and crushed all the bones in my left foot. I was just arriving at the airport to return the rental car before getting on the plane. Rushed to the ER and ended up flying home coach 3 days later to see a foot surgeon near Seattle. That, my friends, was the longest and most painful flight ever. My left foot was absurdly destroyed and it took 8 months before I could even walk on it again and a year of PT after that. I was just getting to where I could walk 1 mile without bad foot inflammation when I had VSG surgery july 2012. To this day my wife and I joke about my franken foot, named that way because of 2 very long scars spanning the top of the foot.
The sad part is I just bought the treadmill before going on vacation. It was never used until 3 years later. Being disabled and off my feet for such a long time was the contributing factor to a large weight gain and mental depression.
For the first 5 months post op, I was afraid of my treadmill (sat for 3 years since accident) and running in general because of the inflammation pain in my foot. I get a lot of inflammation from arthritis, especially when the barometric pressure changes.
BTB finally motivated me indirectly with his c25k posts 3 months ago to put the fear aside and just do it. I am glad I did. Running has been not only beneficial to dropping weight, but also to really living life and mental health. VSG and running has made me into a completely new person; I enjoy life, food and people!
I started out running a 5 k and was not meaning to at all. I had just wanted to get on the treadmill and see what it was all about.
Needless to say, I have progressively worked on improving my 5k and 10 k times over the last couple months and feel pretty good about the progress. I am absolutely thrilled that some of the other runners have reached out to answer my questions about training, running shoes, clothes, what is best to eat before and after running, etc. I will definitely return the favor and help others who are just starting out their running. It is a great forum where we all help each other.
So, long story short: Do not let fear stop you from trying something out physically. You may actually be quite good at it over time. Start slow and you will get better at it as our bodies are truly miraculous in their potential.

Yes it gets easier as the weight comes off. The movements will be more graceful and mechanical, like a fine Swiss watch. As for trouble with blisters, try using running socks. They are more expensive (mine are 12 dollars a pair), but will cut the friction to zero because of material and fit. Once you start to really get into running, as some of you are at that point, go invest in a fitted pair of running shoes. These will cost upwards of 100, but will really help with maintaining good running form and prevent injury.
