mme5 got a reaction from Boofster in Why Lie?!?!
I have wondered what I would say to the people who ask but based on the reaction of the select few people I have shared with, I think I will keep my surgery private. Am I ashamed? No, this by far will be the hardest thing I have done to lose weight. I have been a yo-yo dieter all my adult life. If no one asked me what I was doing to gain the 100lbs. I have to lose, why should they be privy as to how I lost it? It is MY personal business to share or not. Why invite other's judgement of your decision
Into your life? Who needs that added pressure? Everyone handles things they way they think is best for them, and no one should be judged on how they choose to respond to someone's inquiry into their personal business. I'm just saying.

Nice little quote at the end there...Why do you have to be such an ass to everyone who doesnt agree with you? Everyone here obviously gets that you think we should shout from the rooftops that we all had surgery. Thats great that you are so comfortable with it, but most people arent. Everyone is different in how comfortable they are about the situation and no one is wrong in how they feel.
And I agree with IsB, why go through all the legal troubles if you did get fired... Better to just keep it to yourself and not have to deal with that unfair crap.

No, it has nothing to do with my weight. I'm private about my marriage, my job, my financial status, my children, etc - none of which are related to my weight. I've been this way at almost 300lbs and at 160lbs. Why is it that because I'm different than you, then there must be a reason and hopefully I can get past it so I can be more like you?
You may think I get uncomfortable easily. You're entitled to that opinion, but I am happy where I am. I like keeping my private life private. Why is that a negative thing?
I'm not saying it's wrong to shout it from the rooftops if you're so inclined. Why is it wrong to not want to share?

I hear a lot of chatter about "honesty" and "lying", etc. If someone asks me a personal health question, I am under no obligation to answer it. I'm not sure why it's even socially acceptable to pry into someone's personal medical situation. Weight loss is a medical situation - whether it be by surgery, medication, doctor supervised diet, or any other method. What if the person had cancer or some sort of serious medical condition they did not want to share, and that's why they've lost weight? Are they too obligated to go into their diagnosis and explain that's why they've lost weight, because "honesty is the best policy" and we don't want a "web of lies"? No. No. No.
I wouldn't ask how someone's boobs got bigger and expect they tell me they had augmentation. I wouldn't ask someone why they look 10 years younger and obligate them to tell me they had a face lift.
I put it in the same category as people who ask a newly pregnant woman if the baby was planned. Not an acceptable question, yet somehow is still asked regularly by many.
We live in a society of over sharers. I'm horrified with the things people share on Facebook and even face to face. It's created this expectation that all people are ok with leaving their personal life as an open book. There are still many of us that are private about our private lives. I don't appreciate the insinuation that because I don't want to share the intimate details of my internal organs that somehow I'm a liar or ashamed of my choice. Not the case at all. I just don't feel like other people need to know MY medical history.
Comments on weight loss should start and end with...."You look great!" That is an acknowledgment of the loss and leaves the window open for the person to go into how they lost it - should they want to. Not every person is an open book and it is never appropriate to put a more private person on the spot. Better to be safe than sorry.

I think diets are different when some one loses allot than when not. I have only a few things I am allowed, other people seem to get dilutted drinks, juic, milk, and next step Cereal & more prtein drinks etc.., none of which my doctor allows. My loss is higher after 10 days only.

How about today a co-worker asked me I was losing weight...then goes on to ask what am I doing! I changed my diet and am exercising. Think that was the end of it...that would have been too easy. Her next question "Are you going to stick with it?"
    WTF?
This is exactly what I mean. How the hell is this any of her concern. She's not outside asking the smokers to when they are going to quit. My point is obesity in my opinion will never be considered a legitimate health condition like, diabetes, cancer, etc. Any medical/surgical intervention for it will represent the easy way out for most. We who have taken the step toward health and the providers that treat us KNOW that this is not a easy journey and not one we've entered into lightly.

mme5, thanks for the laugh!! "Are you going to stick with it?" - DUH.... it just makes you want to smack someone very hard. I would have shot something back like, "I think so, 'cuz your husband said he likes me skinny."

I told a few close friends before, the ones that were less close were told that the upcoming surgery was personal. One of my friends was very supportive and expressed interest (more curiosity than anything else). She needs to fit in so she has been telling me how she's been sick and cant eat anything and how much weight she's lost. OK, I get that she needs to join in, it's who she's always been. I asked her if she's ever been on My Fitness Pal as a way to track what she eats. She went off on how she hates those sites because they don't understand that people are different, she doesn't need Protein and resents any site telling her that she does. Whoa! That's what I run into, is people that know more than doctors and no one can convince them otherwise. I'll tell anyone that I trust, but I don't plan on being an evangelist. One person at work knows because she has a lap band. If she tells others I wont be mad but if people ask me how I did it, the answer will be diet and exercise, because in reality that's what is really doing it. The sleeve is a tool to keep us from eating too much, it's our determination to stick to the plan that takes off and keeps off the weight.
