I posted this on other threads:
info from my dermatologist yesterday:
My dermatologist explained that the type of hair loss we are experiencing is called telogen effluvium and is more due to recent shock to your system, ie., weight loss, pain, recent surgery, over or under active thyroid, childbirth, medications and other underlying conditions not just lack of Protein. The dermatologist mentioned that one could lose over 50% of your hair, but that it will grow back in 5-8 months. She suggested using minoxidil, which will stimulate the growth of new hair faster. The less expensive brands are: (both 2%)
* Equate which can be purchased at Walmart
http://www.walmart.c...e&cat_id=976760
* Kirkland Minoxidil which can be purchased at costco.
Important instructions on use:
It is important that if you do use the minoxidil, it is to be placed on your scalp, do not rub it into your hair, it will just make your hair more brittle and susceptible to breakage. Do not let it drip onto your forehead as it will cause headaches. The best application is laying back preferably into a Shampoo sink.

Sometimes you just have to set some ground rules and let them know that this is your decision and it's not up for discussion or debate. I wish you well.I do have high blood pressure, mild sleep apnea and pre diabetes. Ive told her these things too...my other friend thinks that she is jealous and this is how she is displaying it...

I got my package on Friday also, that was quick. I love the pocket sized Carb Counter book, very helpful!

If you have any Obesity related diseases I would outline the pros of having the surgery versus suffering with Diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, etc. Put it on paper, send them a letter. Good luck!So I have only told a few people about my WLS decition, one of those people being my best friend. When I first told her she was suprised stating that she "didnt think I was that big." I have explained to her why I wanted the surgery, but she still asks me why I cant just diet and exercise. My mother, who is also supportive asks the same question from time to time, stating that I never stick with any diet and that is why I cant lose weight....that if I just stuck to the diet and exercised I would lose the weight.
I am getting really frustrated and I dont know what to tell them anymore to make them understand. I am planning on telling my father and step mother about the surgery right before I have it, and I am afraid that they will have the same reaction.
What do you guys tell people?! I am getting frustrated with being questioned and people thinking that its just a matter of will power and I am taking the "easy way out."

I had the surgery on 10/8, I was 398 today I am 328, down 70lbs and counting. I have not had any problems thus far, it has been a breeze, no pain, no gas, no mood changes. I hope to continue to work toward my goal weight. I would suggest that you carefully compare Sleeve vs. Bypass. Good Luck!

The FITBIT and Myfitnesspal really work! I wear the fitbit religiously now. My colleague that sits in the office next to mine has motivated me, she works vigorously out every day and when I see her logs it makes me get off my but and work out.I saw this article too - it is a great message.... I have alot of anxiety (two kids with autism disorder pretty much sums up why :-))... and I drank alot of wine and took Lexapro prior to surgery.... after surgery, when they told me I had to crush up all my pills - I just stopped taking the Lexapro (I had to take 2 pills of this alone)... the docs (when I told them what I did) where not happy because your body is going through so much already - you just can't stop cold turkey - but I did :-)... now I'm 6 weeks post-op today and still haven't taken any Lexapro.... my pcp and I decided to see if my exercising would replace the need for meds and we are going to take a look at where I am in about a month from now.... I still have "issues" with my anxiety, and question my decision on coming off of Lexapro sometimes - but as I increase my exercise time, I think this is helping - I know they said 8 mins a day, but I'm probably not up to the "speed" yet they imply in that 8 minutes :-) I guess I'm doing my own "research" and study on this... we'll see but so far so good! p.s. I use a fitbit and am soooo addicted to it - this helps me get motivated to stay active!

It won't be too bad. I had the miralax and Gatorade for my colonoscopy...oy. For the sleeve it was Clear Liquids and magnesium citrate which was much better. Oh, I also used a lot of Vaseline on the bottom to avoid elimination burn....if you know what I mean.

Great information. I also feel for me it was important to clear my mind of any potential obstacles prior to the surgery. Preparation and knowledge are power.

Let me know how your first session goes. I know I'll need an Epsom salt bath afterwards. Much success to you also!

Good for you! I'm starting back with my Trainer on Friday's and Sunday’s this week and like you I’m excited. It's going to be tough at the start (My guy loves to push you to the limit) but it will be worth it in the end. Your trainer may also be able to help you on nutrition. Also, I don't know what health insurance you have but my insurance offers an additional program (at no additional cost) to speak with a Nurse, nutritionist and other health care professionals to work with you on all of your health care needs. This might be something your plan may have as well.

Congrats and good luck.

Yes, I got this info from my surgeon, but after visiting my dermatologist, she said the hair loss is due to the weight loss shock to the system. I should preface that the hair loss does not happen to all and that you SHOULD make sure you get your daily protein in.

Probably after my father died, he was a diabetic for over 40 years and although he lived a long life, the last 6 months of his life were pure hell all due to diabetes. I'm not a diabetic and I didn't want to become one. Diabetes is such an insidious disease and if I could avoid It I needed to make some serious changes.

Hi Oakley, from what I understand they typically use the hyperbaric chamber in severe cases wounds that won't heal as a result of diabetes or radiation damage. It's not a normal practice, typically from my own experience with my dad (he was a diabetic), he was referred to a wound care specialist and they would make the decision to use the chamber. Also note the the HBOT is not available in every hospital, and it may not be covered by your insurance. If you have issues with wounds not healing, I would definitely speak with your surgeon Pre op.
Hope this helps.

Has anyone compared About time to Premier Protein? I'd be curious to know. I like premier but I would like to try different favors.

What about a hard boiled egg or deviled egg with avocado? You can also dice up a Seedless cucumber without the skin.

February 6th was my two month postop. I'm eating terribly although I can't eat much I still eat what I want... I dont know how to fix this....is anyone else having or have had this problem? Ive stopped losing and dont want to fail. I am prolly being hard pn myself but I still know I could do better. I also know u lose the most during your first three months and im coming up on three months March 6th HELLLP
Are you on any calorie counter/exercise tracking site? Are you tracking your foods? I think the best thing is to track your daily intake. Try myfitnesspal.com, you can track your daily food intake. I have found that Pre planning works best, do that and stick with it. Like another poster mentioned above, throw out all of the bad foods so you aren't tempted.

I've experienced the queasiness after drinking Water also, especially in the morning. I found drinking cold water was not pleasant so I would have a large cup of hot tea in the morning to sort of warm the stomach up an it made the water more tolerable. It is much better the further out I am from the surgery .Thanks for that I'm 27 days out and sometimes I feel like that and Water make my stomach queasy and I use to drink it all the time but I appreciate you for your encouraging words my Nut is okay but I realize I have to do what helps me she very strict she like I can't but anything in my tuna I'm like then I won't eat it so I put a dab of lite mayo she don't approve but if I'm going to eat two tsp I better enjoy it so I follow her rules but I take me into consideration as I'm doing so cause this is for life and you have to make it work for you

I do know one person who had the gastric bypass procedure in 2011 and she is very pleased with her outcome. I had my surgery with another surgeon from the group and had no problems. It is a very good group.
