    new with questions

Welcome to the board. I try to eat 70 g of protein a day. My doctor said I must take a daily vitamin and calcium supplement. I also take Omega 3, fiber caps and glucosamine/chondroitin. I find that the fiber is necessary even with consumption of fruits and veggies.

Hi- For years I had been an avid hiker, but for the last 10 years I have been too fat to hike. I figured I would try it again. I went out this morning for what was supposed to be an hours walk-well, guess who got really lost? I took about three hours to get off the mountain. But I did it!!!!!! :whoo:It was hard. My calorie monitor watch says I burned about 1700 calories. Now that's a workout. Now I want to go back ASAP to find out where I messed up!

    Banded Teachers Talk - BTT

That time of year does come fast. I live in Massachusetts. I have to go back on the 31st and the kids come the following Wednesday. I am trying to get excited! Will definitely bring new band challenges!
  4. I think I have a sense of freedom more than excitement. Its hard to appreciate though because my body is moving way faster than my brain. I look in the mirror and don't recognize myself. Yesterday I was out on my hammock and when getting up I caught a glimpse of my thigh. Did I say my thigh? This thigh was attached to my body but it sure wasn't mine. It was too slim and tan. It was a total disconnect. Today I will talk to my therapist about these feelings and try to work them through.
  5. Wlcome to the beginning of your journey to good health!:clap2:
  6. You are absolutely radiant. Congrats on all of your hard work. :clap2:

    Rock bottom

It's a long journey, but it sounds like you are ready to explore it. Nothing is more important than your health. Go for it!
  8. My seminar was in February, my surgery on July 13th.
  9. I always enjoyed exercise-but it is too hard when you are heavy. The discomfort, shortness of breath and fear of a heart attack gave me plenty of reason to put off exercising. I started walking a 1/2 a mile 3 days after surgery. I have built up to 2.5 miles a day. I also practice yoga, but have to wait til my 6 week check up. I go to classes 2x a week and practice at home 2-3 times a week. Keeps my mind off of food. Am I addicted? Maybe just a little, but I have had far worse vices.

    Anyone able to eat cheese

I have had some small problems with melted mozzerella-chew, chew chew and it still seems to form a big lump. Other than that no problem.:clap2:

My gallbladder has been attacking me...

Let me tell you about my experiences-I had my GB removed laproscopically about 10 years ago. Yes, the surgery is similar but there is less pain. Nothing as painful as the port and in IMHO the gas was easier. The gall bladder's function is to store and modify bile. The modifications are minimal and are basically just concentrating it a little. Without a GB, the liver directly secretes bile to the small intestine. I have never had any shortage of bile. I have never had oily or greasy stools (like I did on the "Alli" type med). I feel completely the same as I did when I had my GB. Getting rid of the horrible pain was the only change. Good luck with your surgery. I think you will find that it leaves little impact on your life.

    Is this true????

Try to remember that during the seminar the doctor must speak in generalities. She also needs to make sure that you don't have unrealistic expectations. Everyone has a different experience with the band. If you choose the band your experience will be unique to you. I have heard of many BMI 50+ folks having their surgery laproscopically. I was at 50+ when I was accepted for lap surgery. As far as the diabetes goes there are too many variables to predict each individual case. Making a choice to have this surgery has its risks and benefits, but the odds are overwhelmingly on your side that your life and health will be significantly improved. There are no guarantees except that if you don't have surgery nothing will change.

    1 week!

It depends on whether your doctor advised clear liquid or full liquids. If it is clear liquids only, you've pretty much got it covered. Full liquids is generally considered to be anything that would pass through a straw (but don't use a straw!), including protien shakes and blenderized soup

    Tried cheating--dont do it!

Take a wedge of one of the laughing cow light cheeses (herb or french onion) and mix with a tablespoon of fat free mayo or fat free sour cream-ITS GREAT! :clap2:

CeCe that sounds rough--and you just had your surgery!! When does your school year start? Hopefully the move closer to home will be more than worth it in the end.

    Swelling?

This was exactly my experience as well. I think it is normal and to be expected.

I'm With The Band, And Lovin It

Congrats to you-You will feel even better with each pound lost. Everything gets easier when you have the extra energy and stamina that comes with weight loss.

Is this really only a tool?

Think of it this way-If you want to drive in a screw, you use a screwdriver to make it easier. You still have to turn it though, but it is much easier than driving the screw in by hand.

    Protein Drinks/ Shakes

This is my basic recipe for a homemade protien shake that is delicious. 1 c. lite soy milk (vanilla or chocolate) 1 scoop EAS vanilla Protein powder 1-2 tablespoons of any flavor sugar free, fat free pudding mix (add the powder directly fom the box) 4 ice cubes optional fruit Blend until ice is smooth Using the pudding you can create a variety of flavors like white chocolate and cheesecake (add a few strawberries to this when you are ready). This recipe makes a thick filling shake with 30 g of protien.
  20. Try using a heating pad on your belly or shoulder. Call your doc and ask for pain meds. I wouldn't have gotten through the first day without them. It does get better. Today is my 3 week anniv. and I can hardly tell I had surgery except for an occasional port twinge. Hang in there, get plenty of rest.
  21. Thanks for asking this question. Prior to my surgery I had practiced yoga for a year and a half and I really miss it. I am only three weeks post surg so obviously I have refained. I plan to talk with my surgeon at the six week fill visit and get his opinion. Yoga is fairly gentle-even when doing vinyasas (sp?) it is about flow and not about jerky sudden movements. As all yogis know you have to be humble and realize your limits by listening to your body-I think this is even more important in our situation. Let me know if you learn anything more. Hope you get to enjoy yoga because it helps in so many ways.
  22. I do-It makes me very sick-My Dr. gave me oxycodone. It was reaaly strong though and I only took it the first 2 days because I felt so out of it!

    Pretend Banding

I practiced for the band for about 3 months. I started exercising everyday. I followed my nutritionist's advice to eat 6 small protein based meals a day and to aim for about 1600 calories. A year and a half ago when I first started considering the band, I gave up candy and have not had any to this day. I lost 15 lbs in a year by giving up the candy. Then since starting the 1600 cal diet I had lost an additional 40 pounds. I am good at losing weight, but better at gaining it back. Once I knew the band was coming it gave me the courage and confidence to lose again, knowing that i had a special friend to help me this time.:whoo:
  25. trystelle

    Well it didn't happen

I did the same thing and am not sorry. Once I met with my nutritionist, I started on a high Protein 1600 calorie diet and daily exercise. I went from 313 to 275-while waiting for my band. I think it was totally worth it, plus it helps you to establish new habits before you get your band. Good luck!
