banded in Feb07 new to the group

Welcome-I am glad you found us too! Your weight loss seems within normal range of the expected 1-2 lbs a week. As for the froggy feeling, you may have irritated your stoma-try a day of soft foods and/or liquids. If you had done something serious, you would have more severe symptoms like inability to swallow, throwing up and the like. Share your concern with your doc when you go for your fill. Hope you get good restriction this time, because that may help to speed up the weight loss.

    Husband getting banded

It is wonderful that you are so actively supportive. Your husband is a lucky man!
  3. Just a point of information about the terms used with amino acids. An essential amino acid is one your body cannot produce so you have to eat it. A nonessential amino acid can be synthesized by your body. The essential term is not about good or bad quality or whether it is necessary, but simply your bady cannot produce it so you have to eat it.

I spent the day reading up on preop and postop diets..and well since i dont a have nutritionist, i figured i would do the preop diet to the most of my ability. from what ive read it seems you guys follow a program from your doctors..would you mind running it by me so i know?? The pre op diet varies form doc to doc. My doctor did not have me do a pre op diet, but I had been dieting for several months anyway. It seems that most people do a 10 day liquid diet or a liquid diet with a small sensible supper. like how long does your preop clearance schedule? does everyone undergo counselling? im require to undergo psychiatric clearance, do you do the same?? It is standard here that everyone needs to be cleared by some sort of counselor. They need to make sure that we are emotionally ready to deal with the band and the changes that it will bring. Since I have had an unhealthy relationship with food for many years, I spoke to a counselor for several years prior to my surgery. how long doe it usually take till the day of banding?? I started the official process in January and got my band in July. Good luck!

I think that anyone who takes this procedure seriously has these doubts and second thoughts. It is a huge commitment and it will change your relationship with food. Food is still my friend-but it is my friend that works with me to be healthy and energetic. Do miss our old relationship-You bet! Will I get over it-I will-sometimes it is hard but I have taken up yoga and walk daily and this really helps me to comfort myself the way I used to with food.

For those of us who weigh in daily!!

I like to weigh daily and graph it on Daily Plate. This way I can look back to when I started tracking in April and appreciate how well I have done-even if the scale hasn't moved in the last few days. Also I tend to drop 1.5 to 2.5 pounds at a time and then it goes up and down a pound for a couple of days.

    Hello from Western Mass!

I too am from Western Mass! I just got my band on 7/13 with Dr Haag at Baystate. I started the process in January. I am very pleased with my band. I am feeling great! I have lost 21 pounds since surgery and lost 55 pounds before the surgery. You are right about the differences between lapband and bypass. The lapband is much less invasive and does not keep you from absorbing nutrients so you don't feel weak. Good luck to you.

    What is general recovery time

The answers to these questions really vary with the individual. Your best source of info would be your doctor who would make these decisions with you. My personal experience. I would have been ready to go back to work in a week-if the job wasn't intensely physical. Your major limitation after that time is lifting. If you had a job that required lifting you would have to take off additional time or have your job responsibilities modified. It took me about 3 weeks to get back to regular foods, but I think my doctor is more liberal about this than most. Often times I see people reporting 6-8 weeks. Good luck.

    How sore was your abdomen?

I have had a c section and I think it was significantly harder than THE BAND. The first couple of days with the band is no picnic, but less painful than a c section. Also you will feel better much faster than you did from the c-section.

Struggling - How do you do it!?!?!

I try not to think about it. I exercise every day. That way I don't have to make a decision every day. Once I get started-I generally enjoy. But even if I exercise a short while it helps and doing it everyday helps to make it a habit. I guess if I were sick I would skip that day, but since I have started my exercise routine I haven't been sick!

My diet immediately after post op was liquids like Protein Shake and Soups put throught the blender. In about a week I was able to eat baby food, yogurt, cottage cheese and mashed potatoes. Then I could eat soft foods like tuna and cooked vegies. Last came meats and uncooked fruits and vegies. Now I eat a well balanced diet of 5-6 small meals a day. I make sure they have plenty of Protein. I try to get at least 70 g of prtein a day. I don't have full restriction yet, so I can eat mostly everything. It takes a few fills to get to a place where the band is really effective. I feel great. I exercise everyday and I have lots of energy. You should be sure you get the best doctor possible. Follow what s/he tells you to do. This is a life long commitment and you will have to change your life. Let me know what other questions you might have.

    Cottonmouth????

Also certain medicines given for nausea can result in a very dry mouth. I had a scolopine (sp?) patch and got immediate relief once I took it off.

So glad that you found us. We may not be there with you. but folks here are always willing to help and support. It is very admirable that you are pursuing the band despite the fact that it is not yet popular in your country. I bet it will be soon and you will be a trailblazer. Best of luck on your journey.
  17. I think if you don't make a big deal about it people will not notice. If you don't want to tell them about your surgery and they say something, just make up an excuse. Tell them that you ate earlier or that your stomach isn't quite right. Try to relax and enjoy your band. You will do fine!!!!!

    Breathing Deeply

Hi it took a few days to get my breath back to normal from the anesthesia. This happens to everyone. If your hospital gave you a spirometer-use it. If not, practice doing a couple of deep breaths several times an hour. If you don't have improvement you might want to call your doc.
  19. Good for you-I took the same route and "practiced" for the band while I waited through the process. I lost 40 pounds during this time. I also started walking a little each day. I think it made the surgery easier and maybe even safer. And you know that once you get the band you won't gain it back. Best of luck on your journey.

Banded 8/13 - NOT doing well

Hi-sorry you are having such a hard time. Many of us have had early TOMs after surgery. I am thinking that the heparin (blood thinners) they give us for surgery might have some effect on our monthly schedules. Hope you resolve some of your issues with your doc tomorrow.

Sorry you are having such a tough time. It sounds like you might need more of an unfill. What does your doc say? Have you make him/her aware of what is going on? It's no wonder you are weak-you are not able to eat a healthy diet!!!

    1 mth post op

Hey I am one month post op and going to get my first fill on Monday. I hear it is not really painful with a skilled doctor. I am not nervous because I have checked with several of his other patients and they all said it was easy. You are doing wonderfully. I have lost 20 lbs since surgery and 55 from dieting before surgery. Good Luck on Monday!
