Your concerns are very common and ones that many of us can relate to. I questioned my ability to achieve long-term success after being sleeved and still do on occasion.
However, things change after the surgery. My cravings for junk food somehow disappeared and were replaced with cravings for healthy food. I still don't get it but love it nonetheless.

Andrew0929 got a reaction from ProudGrammy in Treated Differently After Weight Loss
I'm 2.5 years out and have been at or near goal since 9 months out. Overall, everything has been great!
However, I've noticed that 2 people (1 relative and 1 friend) have become very distant and stand-offish along the way.
In both cases I can't recall any incident that could have caused this, which is why I'm confused. They are both over weight, although not excessively. Only one of the two knows about my WLS.
I'm tempted to confront them, but for now have just ignored it.
    Any theories or recommendations?

i think i will always identify myself as a sleever
like you, i didn't tell many about WLS (except immediate family)
guess that means i still lead a normal life
    whatever that is!!
    in my past life
i used to think about yummy foods alllll the time
what will i eat next, etc
now, i still think of upcoming food for the day
just healthier food to eat, calories, Protein, carbs etc
i think that is the difference for me
that's where my sleeve comes in
that will continue to help make me be successful
17+ years post op cancer - that's a long time
i can/will never forget those days
WLS is not as significant as breast cancer or a "brain tumor"
will never forget the importance of both (in their own way)
    just my thoughts bud
    different strokes for different folks
continued healthy, happy days to us both!!
    see you around the neighborhood

At 2.5 years post-op, I'm less focused on the surgery part but still as focused on the food choices and exercise.
It is an intriguing question. A few years after the massive weight loss, when the steady flow of comments and questions has diminished, the surgery part of this process fades away.
I worry about losing my edge in staying on top of following the rules as time passes. I want to remain aware of all that I've been through as a WLS patient to help keep me on track.
Note to self: you will always be a WLS patient.

i am close to 5 years PO
i can/will never forget my "roots"- days pre-sleeve
the day i do, is the day i can look "forward" to problems
the sleeve is NOT the only thing that defines me
but it's way up on my list
short and sweet - i will always be a sleeved "proud" grammy
my life has been saved with a my wonderful weight
health issues, you know the rest, are amazing
    happiness abound
these issues were all helped/solved with the aide of WLS
    how could i forget?
I need/will always monitor my food very carefully
i can't afford to go backwards where i started
that's why i will always consider myself a "WLS survivor"
i will always consider myself a proud 17+ year breast cancer survivor
    no difference right??
    Long live the sleeve
    and me too!!!
that's my story and i'm stickin' to it!! LOL

Many of us have gone through the same experience. I'd never had surgery before and was questioning this decision right up to the point of being wheeled into the OR.
Now 2.5 years later and 160 pounds lighter I know it was the best decision I ever made. I tried every diet and even lost 100 pounds a few times, but it never lasted long. I've been at goal since 9 months out and have never been happier.
Just do it and don't look back ...

Crab without butter is very low-calorie and loaded with Protein. I use spray butter (I Can't Believe It's Not Butter) and can barely tell the difference. We bring it to restaurants all the time.
Also put it on baked potato (4 Oz). We pour it in when cooking with it. Zero calories - just chemicals.
    This opens up many options...

I'm going through similar issues. I have so much energy now that I can't sit still. I'm bored sitting in front of the TV and doing other sedentary activities.
I think my high-energy attitude may be too much for one family member and one friend, but I don't care.

I'm 2.5 years out and at goal since 9 months out (down 150). I gained about 13 pounds 2 years out and fixed it by pulling out my notes from the nut. She recommended a level of calories and carbs for maintenance and when I abide by that I stay in check. I continue to measure and log to know exactly where I stand and this has worked well for me. But, of course everyone is different .

Andrew0929 reacted to AvaFern in New relationship after sleeve surgery
I tell no one I am dating because it is none of their business. I also chose to only tell my three best friends and to this day (almost 3-years post-op) those are the only people that know. I had plastics, so I don't have the scars on my stomach, but if I did I would just say I had my gallbladder removed. The placement of the scars is a bit different, but 99% of men are not going to know that or be paying enough attention to care.
I did not date until I had reached goal and had most of my plastics procedures done because I knew it would be a distraction. My boyfriend then made comments that I did not eat a lot and my response was...do you like having a hot gf? Right? Well then no, I don't get to eat ice cream, it's kind of part of wearing a size 2. It irks me when men comment on what I eat, which the vast majority never do. At any rate, the few times someone says something I just say...I had a big lunch, I'm just not really hungry today, I drank way to much Water before dinner, I'm saving room for dessert later (which I then conveniently forget to order), or any variety of perfectly valid excuses.
The only person I will ever tell about surgery is maybe someone I am in a long-term, serious, almost getting married relationship with. My prior surgeries are none of their business. Everyone has secrets and mine is nothing that is ever going to hurt anyone not to know. Relationships are not always about someone knowing every little secret detail about you, particularly those that have no relevance on the relationship. Your new boyfriend has secrets too...in the same way you respect his right to keep them, respect your own right to keep yours to yourself until if and when you may choose not to. Simply dating someone does not mean you have to tell them everything, or even anything, about your life that you might not be ready to talk about. Have a good time with your new man, eat how you want to without feeling the need to justify yourself, and if and when you feel like you are comfortable, maybe tell him, maybe don't, either decision is entirely valid and only yours to make.

Even 2.5 years post-op and down 150 pounds, I still have all my fat clothes in the basement. I'm hoping I never need them but am having difficulty due to the effort needed to buy nice clothes in those sizes. Still, that's no excuse and I just decided that it's time to let go.
