    November 2013 Bandsters Check In

Hi Nov band-mates, I am still here, trying to stay encouraged. Have lost 59 pounds since I started this journey, that includes my 2 wk pre-op loss. I read at this general site a lot at first but had to stop because everyone seemed to lose like 60lbs in 4 months, for example, and that made me too depressed since I couldn't lose that fast. I am 63 yrs old with 2 knee replacements. I will be the first to say I hate exercise and do it sporadically but also know that when I am walking, biking and swimming on a regular basis,I lose much better. I have many NSVs and am happy with what I have lost, just want to get in high gear and do better. Mt dr is not unhappy with my loss,he is very conservative with fills and I like him a lot. Glad to find this thread and will be coming here more often. Have a good day !

    Jacksonville, Florida

Hi, I am in Jax and would LOVE to talk to somebody, or email, or something. Had my lapband surgery in Nov of this year, have only lost 40lbs since surgery, plus 20 in pre-op. Haven't been able yet to attend a support meeting at St Vincents. Just need some encouragement if anyone has the time, thanks !! Rosemary
  11. Hi, My name is Rosemary and my lap band surgery was mid Nov. I am in the Jax area and have been dying to talk to somebody in person, like just on the phone, maybe. I am using the St Vincents bariatric surgeons as well and am very happy with them. My daughter had surgery 4 yrs ago and she is a great support for me. Thus far, I have been unable to attend any of the support meetings thru the hospital. My email is granniero@bellsouth.net, if you have time to communicate with me. I will send you my phone # by email if I hear from you there. Thanks so much. Ro.

    AIR TRAVEL AFTER LAP BAND

I was banded in Mid-Nov w/ 3 small fills since then, my dr is very conservative. I flew from Florida to Las Vegas in Mid-April then drove back to Fl 20 days later. I felt no restriction from my band whatsoever. No different to me than being at home. I have lost 53 pounds and was thrilled on my flight to no longer need a seat belt extension. I have over 100 lbs yet to go but kn with progress. No problems flying.

Trying to get back on track need help

Hi, I'm Rosemary. I am 63 yrs old and I was banded on Nov.13th. I have lost 50 lbs and have well over 100 to go. I've been slipping, sliding and generally not paying attention, not flowing the rules very closely. I just returned from a 32 day vacation and today started to try the 5 day pouch test. I wanted something to help me get back on track quickly and really focus on what I need to be doing. So far, so good. I was professional at yo-yo dieting in my past life and don't want to live that way. I had the procedure to gain some quality of life and improve my health, the weight loss I expect to come along with that as I change my lifestyle permanently. My best to you, we can do this !! My mantra for today has been "follow the rules and use the tool". My email address is granniero@bellsouth.net if you would like to communicate there. Be blessed !
  14. I am 4 months post op and enjoy baking and cooking, just have to switch recipe types to fit the new life. Was wondering if anyone has a protein powder they recommend for baking or using in recipes other than shakes. I'm afraid to invest in a bunch of brands not knowing if I will be wasting my money if thet don't work well. Thanks for any help you might have !
  15. I once heard it said, "when you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on". Change is usually difficult and a move like yours is a major stressful event. But you had the courage to get your lapband and start a new and better life for yourself in that way, so you will get thru this as well. I also moved after 14 years from the home my children grew up in and for years I dreamed about that little house, it was our first house. But that was 30 years ago and we built out dream house and have enjoyed it every since. You'll make it !!!You will make many memories in your new house ! Be blessed.
  16. My daughter had her lap band 4 yrs ago on a Fri and went back to work on Mon, she has a desk job and 5 children at home. I am 62 yrs old and had mine done in mid Nov. I was sore but never took anything for pain, had no need for it, pain was not that serious to me. I spent 1 night in hosp because of using CPAP for breathing. The afternoon and evening of my first day home, I had nausea to the point of dry heaves. Took some meds I had on hand that didn't help, called dr and got suppositories that stopped the nausea. At my age, I could not have gone back to work in 3 days, but that is me, and for every response you get, the answer will be different because this is a very individual thing. What works for one may not work for anyone else.Listen to your dr and your own body. Best of luck to you, you can do this !

    Is this a good idea?

To me, it's a great idea. My husband went w/me to the pre-op appointment, met the dr, asked questions and has been a great support. Always helps to have your spouse on your cheering team !

    Greek yogurt add-ins

Plain or vanilla greek yogurt with a spoon or 2 of natural peanut butter and a squirt of sugar free chocolate syrup. Or greek yogurt sprinkled with homemade granola for crunch. Both exccelent !!

    APPLES!!!

Today I am 4 weeks out and have been afraid to try apples. I bought several honeycrisps the other day and my granddaughter wanted one tonight so I fixed hers and took a slice for myself. It was wonderful !! Will definitely have some more.

    A cry for a friend...

I just wanted to say I am so sorry for your loss, good friends are hard to come by. 1 year ago I lost my 44 yr old daughter in law. She had gastric bypass and lost a lot of weight. About 6 years in,she began to have health problems from diabetes that she had from age of 6. She didn't take good care of herself before or after surgery and a combination of health issues overcame her. On one of her last hospital admissions, she was diagnosed as severely malnourished. She succumbed a year ago and it has been hard on my family, especially my son, married to her for 18 years. I'm so sorry this happened to your friend, through no fault of her own. You go on and take care of yourself, she would be proud of you.May God bless you in your journey and give you peace.
  21. I want to get healthy to live longer to be here for my grandchildren. Have a grand daughter who adores me and at 12 she already has an obesity problem. I hope to be a good example for her.
  22. Yes, I miss it. I was banded Nov 13th and had stopped several weeks prior, I drank 2 diet Dr Peppers first thing every morning. Now I drink a large glass of iced water. Some mornings I think, I sure would love a Dr Pepper, but I know soda is not good for anyone, one big mix of chemicals, so I know I feel better without putting all those chemicals in my body. But sure would love one some mornings !
  23. My daughter had hers about 4 yrs ago at age 39. She had the procedure, went home from the hospital that day which was a Friday and returned to work on Mon. She has 6 children and works full time. I had mine on Nov 13th at age 62, spent the night in hosp, came home and had dry heaves during the night but was better next morning. I had to take it easy for a week and felt better into the next week. I was sore but did not need pain meds at all. Each person's body is different.Hard to say how yours will handle it and for every person, I would say it is diferent.Have you ever been put to sleep for another surgery and how did you recover from that? I don't consider this major surgery but anytime one is put to sleep it is somewhat of a stress on the body. I'm sure you will get lots of different opinions here and none of them are probably wrong, we just all have different bodies and reactions. Best of luck, I know you will be successful.

    So Disappointed :(

Hi New Life, I can understand how you feel. I am 62 yrs old and struggled w/food all my life until it became an obsessive/compulsive thing and I ate my way to 285lbs (I am 5'4" tall). I got banded on Nov 13th.I am about 2 wks away from getting my first fill.As of today, I have lost 32 lbs and I feel so good. Once in awhile I eat something I shouldn't but I won't waste another minute of my life beating myself up over it. I did this to have a better quality of life. I have wasted so much of my life already struggling with this and hating myself.I am taking it one day at a time. On Thanksgiving day I nibbled on some fried turkey skin, ate a little ham, dressing and sweet potato casserole. Later in the day I had a sliver of 2 pies. Had a small Breakfast and for dinner ate some ham,I think. I enjoyed what I ate and felt very good about not being stuffed to the point of feeling ill like so many times before. Enjoyed being with family, it was a good day. Diet-wise, maybe not perfect but good just the same. It took many yrs for me to get this way and will take time to overcome. I know that getting my stomach banded did not fix my brain so I have to learn to rethink life and coping with it w/out the crutch of compulsive overeating. You can do what you set out to do. Just starting this journey shows that you care about yourself. Sometimes we have to learn how to love ourself and be nice to ourself. We all deserve to take care of us. You have a good day and keep moving forward.Don't look back.....Hugs,Rosemary
  25. I am seeing my dr for 1st post-op visit tomorrow, kind of excited, it will be 13 days out. Was supposed to see him in 1 wk but this was soonest I could be seen, according to scheduling girl. I think I'm doing well. Did the full liquids for a week and am slowly advancing to regular textures. Think I've lost 11 lbs so I am happy. Used to hate going to my regular dr, always got the lecture, you know the one, about how everything would be SO much better if I lost weight. Let you know how it goes tomorrow.
