VictoriousPassion reacted to grumpynonna in starting over with lapband
Oh, phew! I thought I was the only one. I was banded November 2007, lost about 100 lbs in about a year and a half, and then sort of leveled off, about 30 lbs above goal. I wasn't gaining OR losing for a long time. Then I thought my port had flipped, but when a flouro was done, turned out the band was katty-wampus, and tilted at a weird angle. The surgeon thought there might be some slippage, so he completely unfilled me for a couple of weeks.
Then we started re-filling but even though I was less filled than before, it kept being too tight, so we'd take a little out again. Long story short, I had to make two unscheduled trips up and over the mountains last year to get UNfilled when even drinking Water was painful. After the first time this happened in August, started re-filling again a few weeks later, only to have the same thing happen again. So beginning of November, we decided to just let the band be unfilled for a month or two so everything could settle down.
It wasn't until the end of January [because of snow/ice on the roads] that I finally was able to get back to start re-filling again, the first time again with fluoro to make sure all was ok, which it was. Band looks good, and have had two fills now, back for another next week.
But having no restriction for over two months, while a relief in some ways after the misery of being too tight, also meant a BIG reminder that while the band may be an excellent tool for losing weight, it does NOTHING to cure the obesity, or the compulsive eating, or whatever you want to call what got me to 280 lbs in the first place. Oooooof.
At first when I was unfilled, I still ate small amounts, maybe from habit, but very slowly that Always Hungry part of me started to come awake, and I slowly started eating a little more. I've gained about 20 lbs, and have noticed those "I'll never get enough food!" feelings creeping back a bit. I do feel as though I need to start over in some ways, at least as far as my mind-set is concerned. I have been able to eat pretty much anything I want, except in smaller amounts, before all this happened. But eating unrestricted seems to have triggered all the old thinking. Sigh. At nearly 65, it's really annoying to have to "reboot" the whole process. But I am hopeful. Wish us all luck! We did it before, we can do it again.......Diane

I haven't been on this site in a while...feels good to be back and reading all the success stories.
Anyways, It's been a year after surgery, and I'm pregnant! 11 weeks along, to be exact. It was definitely a SUPRISE! But happy about everything now
I have a few questions...when should I tell my surgeon?! I'm really afraid to call and tell them, and I don't know why !! I've had some morning sickness, and have only thrown up 1 time. And it was stomach acid ewwww. I feel nauseous when I don't eat, so I'm snacking every 2 hrs or so to keep my stomach full. I don't feel like I need an unfill, but I'm curious about everyone else! I guess I'm scared to see doctor because I have not lost weight like I should and now, here I am with a pregnancy! I feel like a Lapband failure.
Also, I'm going with a midwife, and not an obgyn. I plan on having her baby at a birthing center, naturally. I hope everything will go smoothly so my wishes for baby can happen. This is my first baby!
If anyone has advice on when to see my Lapband surgeon, or any info on midwife and the band, that would he great!

I have taken 3 pregnancy test and they were all positive so I am going to make an appointment tomorrow with my PCP. I'm extremely nervous because I've only had my lapband for a little over a year and I am down 77 lbs. My question is if I am pregnant can I have a normal pregnancy with the lapband?

I am 39 years old...banded July 26, 2009. I met my goal of 100lbs of weight loss. I became pregnant in January, 2012...with TWINS!!!! I am 29 weeks and I have gained 28 pounds, but I am pretty miserable right now. In the last week, things are getting stuck and I am only consuming liquids. My drs want me to gain 15 pounds before delivery so that my boys will get bigger. I will deliver early at 36 because of the high risk twin pregnancy I am having. I don't mind gaining more weight for them. They have to be 5 lbs each in 7 weeks...so I have to fatten up a little more. Normal twin pregnancies suggest the average woman gain 40-45 pounds and I will be on target with that, but will have to have  my band adjusted. My lapband dr says he is only going to take 1/2 out. I am happy with that. I cried making the phone call but I know it is for the boys. Prior to getting pregnant, I was so happy with my weight loss. I will have 1/4 of the 1/2 put back in four weeks after the c-section and then go from there. I am so thrilled my dr is not taking it all out. I don't need it all out, just loosened a little. Thick Soups are giving me problems and that is when I knew I needed to get the adjustment.

For me walking/jogging is best because I usually have the energy and motivation to go half way and then I don't have a choice but to walk my ass all the way back to my house

I agree with Guy, back to the basics. Measure or weight portions and get back to regular exercise.

For me it's just been going back to the basics which are exercise and diet. I try to cut out many carbs such as breads, sugar, fruit juices, etc. and stick to Proteins such as meats, cheese, and Beans with some veggies thrown in as well. It's good to realize that weight loss is about 80/20 diet/exercise. As for exercise I would recommend consistent cardio such as walking/jogging or swimming.

I can take most of the pills I could before surgery. The only change I made was to Calcium minis. Everyone is different. Try chewables until you find on you like. Many people like the gummies.< /p>

My doctor wants me to lose 4 pounds per month, and that's what's happening. I don't have any restriction yet, and have had 4 fills. I'm hoping this fill next week will put me in the green zone. My doctor told me to wait 25 seconds in between bites and to take extremely small bites. But with no restriction this is impossible for me to do..But the good news is that I do yoga 5 days a week, ride my bike for 2.5 hours every day or if not every day I walk about 6 to 8 miles a day. So the exercise is up where it needs to be, and I don't eat sugar or processed foods. I feel bad when I see the postings of people who have lost 50 to 90 pounds but then I remind myself that will be me one of these days. Thanks everyone for posting, I can't tell you how much these postings helped me the first few months. I don't have any stuck feelings, but if I eat or drink to much I get a lot of shoulder pain.

I am just curious. I measure most everything that I eat. I keep seeing posts in some of the lap band groups where people are saying they are upset they are not losing but they count calories. Turns out they are not measuring their food? How on earth can you count calories if you are not measurin your poritons? Most of these posts are newer people. They just want to be right and don't want to listen. Oh well... maybe this post will help someone..
