    Love this!
    And I'll add:
Never being concerned if I fit in the turnstile
Never needing a seatbelt extender on airplanes again
Never being afraid to sit on someone's dining room chair

    I did . . . but I didn't follow through on it!
I decided to have wls surgery because I was ready to make a change. Having a "last supper" or splurging on bad-4-me foods felt like a step backwards. Plus I did that right before every other "failed" attempt in the past. I wanted this time to be different! I'm ready and committed to making life long changes starting from the day I walked into the info session! That was three months ago, I've lost 40+ pounds, my surgery is 11/7 and I'm pumped and ready!

I can't wait to post my surgery date. Actually I am a little to a lot jealous of everyone posting theirs. The funny thing is I can't remember the last time I was jealous, or even what it was I was jealous about.

I started off like most on this site, fed up with my weight. Disgusted, tired of not fitting in the booths at restaraunts and having to ask for a table instead. Tired of not being able to shop where I wanted for clothes, tired of all the meds for diabetes and high blood pressure...and just plain tired!. My journey started off very rocky. Went and filled out all the paperwork, did the psych eval, got approved, got a surg date. Super excited at that point, did the presurg diet thing and I'll be damned the night before the surgery got a fever of 103. Went to the emergency room and they found a kidney stone as big as a dime. Surgery on hold at that point of course til later. Had to have emergency surgery to remove the stone, set date again for 3 months out. Had the surgery finally on a Monday, out of the hospital on Tuesday. I went shopping on Friday because I'm stubborn and couldnt just sit at home and went back to work the following monday with my staples still in(ya crazy me)lol. I couldn't eat any solids for like 3 weeks, then graduated eventually to a little, then a little more then solids. Definitely cant eat that much so began to lose weight rapidly. One day while in my car, had change in my hand and I dropped a quarter. For some reason without thinking I reached down between my legs and picked it up. OMG. I stopped the car and start thinking for a second like "what the hell just happened?" usually I would have had to just get out of the car to pick up something underneath my feet because of that belly bulge. From that point on I could see small changes of things I hadn't been able to do for years and its small things that you take for granted, things that once were difficult, not so hard any longer. I used to have to sit at a table in every restaraunt for being embarassed I may get stuck in a booth. I can now slide right in and out just like those thin s.o.b's could do all of their lives!!! Once you see small changes, it makes you want to keep going and keep challeging yourself every single day of your life. I was 408 and would get tired of walking from my job just to my car and all out of breath. Now I can walk 6 miles nonstop and going for more! My kid told me the other day "daddy you play too much, you always wanna wrestle all the time" Now think about that one. I can outplay my kids now. This former 408 pounder's got more energy than a dang 12 year old!! If that don't make one feel good, I don't know what else can. It's the small things that made this journey worthwhile, the looks you get when you show up to Christmas dinner, even the way you fit in your car once the weight is gone is the most rewarding little thing you can ever have. I was diabetic, had high blood pressure and now all of that is gone. I gave myself a raise at work because I don't have to pay for all the meds now associated with being obese. I am about 280 or so now and no more health issue(though I did get a headache and took aspirin once in the last year lol) Do this for your kids and yourself, not only will it change your love life(and life in the bedroom) but you will wake up everyday knowing that you made a choice, went through with it and most of all you can laugh in the face of all those evil little skinny people and say Yes, I was fat, no lie but guess what, I didn't roll over and die..what have you done with your life lately??

Many people find that the sleeve has a shockingly-sudden positive effect on almost every aspect of your health. The doctors cannot even explain all of it, but your blood pressure, blood sugars, lipids, and liver enzymes all get really good really fast. No to mention things like sleep apnea and so on. With your fragile health, it seems pretty likely you will see a lot of big benefits.
Also keep in mind that people who have problems post a lot more than people that don't. Most sail through this procedure effortlessly. I am one of those. It was absolutely not a big deal. Minnimal pain, and a few weeks of restricted diet. I am 9 weeks post op and living a pretty normal life (67 lbs lghter).
I love food. I love to cook and I love eating with people. I can eat almost anything in small quantities. Since the surgery I have eaten stingray, and satay on the back streets of Singapore. At home I have eaten Creole, Sushi, Italian, Tapas and more. In the next 6 weeks I will be eating in Spain, London, Jordan, Chile, and Panama. I plan to eat well. I can't eat the carbs for a while, but I get in everything else. I am holding off on the alcohol, but I might get just a little of that in while I hang out in my favorite underground blues club in London.
The sleeve doesn't control your life, you do. Make your decision on the facts, and then make your new life the way you want it to be. It is all about taking control of those voices in your head and moving on with your life. You will be OK.

I used to have fat overlap on my mid-back creating little wings. Well, I was talking on the phone outside and I put my hand on my back and realized that I couldn't feel the wings anymore! They're gone! Yay!
    So excited about this.

It is a very weird reaction.
I have had a couple of people tell me I should stop now and not lose too much more weight. It is crazy to hear as I am still obese, with a BMI of 33 and about 45 pounds from goal.
I have looked at these people with an extreme WTF expression and really not known how to take it. I have each time decided they were trying to be nice and say I looked good. This feels much better than thinking they were trying to hurt or sabotage me in some way. So take it as a compliment and move on. The best thing about this approach is you spend no time in angst over their comments AND if they did mean to be nasty then they have failed because you didn't react :-)

RunningGranny reacted to Izuri in Has Anyone Convinced Or Gotten Their Work To Add Bariatric Surgery To The Insurance
I think that it would be nice to see a movement toward preventative care. We get so focused on curing people that we forget that we could avoid a number of diseases and ailments by pushing more preventative care. There is some movement toward it, but in the long run we could save ourselves far more money by preventing the disease in the first place. My surgery cost my insurance company about $20,000, but to pay for doctor visits, surgeries/amputations for necrotic ulcers due to noncompliance, hospitalizations, medications, etc for if I got diabetes would far outweigh the cost of surgery. But type 2 diabetes is preventable in a lot of people - does that mean that it should still be under the uncontrollable category? Or alcoholism? The list could really go on and on of self-inflicted ailments that are considered necessary by insurance. Personally, I don't feel that this is all that much different. Some of us are addicted to food, some of us have mobility limitations, etc. It may start out as something that is elective, but obesity is a large risk factor in an endless number of diseases.
I do agree that that's how insurance companies see things like this nowadays, but I hope in the future we can see a change to them covering more preventative care - not just weight loss surgery, but other measures that help keep people healthy.
OP: I would try to see if your HR has any kind of appeals process. The worst that they can do is come back and say no. I know that I - along with probably a number of people on this board - would be very interested to see the process and the results if you do. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.
