    We come to this site for support, and support comes in many forms. I think the concern is, no matter how you look at it, the OP DID go against doctor's orders by introducing soft foods early. If she had talked to him before hand and gotten permission, that's one thing, but she didn't. That is something that frightens a lot of us because of all the complications that can follow. It ended well for her, thank God, but for some it doesn't. And yes, there have been deaths linked to leaks that occur as a result of proceeding the diet too early. I cannot post these as I am on my phone, but feel free to google the subject.
    Yes, respect is important, but sometimes support isn't sugar coated and isn't a pat on the back but a dose of reality. I urge anyone thinking about advancing early to speak with your doctor or nut first. Guidelines are there for a purpose.

    I think that people who make the "I did a dumb/bad thing and didn't follow my doctor's orders" are looking for several different responses.
    Some people slip and get scared that they've hurt themselves. Response to that always seems to overwhelmingly supportive.
    Some people haven't been properly educated about the healing process. Everyone is very quick to inform them and give them ideas for new recipes and coping skills.
    Some people are still enslaved by emotional eating and they don't recognize it. I don't think these posters are looking for support, ideas, or help. I think they want someone to tell them it's OK to disobey doctor's orders and they get angry when they don't get what they want and say we're judging them. Maybe we are, but maybe they need people who won't act as enablers for self destructive behavior.

    Hyperbole alert!
    Some of the confusion is caused by the fact that every surgeon and surgery program have different post op requirements. I know a lot of people here got through their purée stage by eating refried Beans. My NUT said no Beans until 3 months post op.
    I doubt anyone would die from advancing themselves a little early. That being said, surgeons make their standard food stages based on how most people heal. One of the first things my program case manager said to our orientation class was, "You are not special." This was in the context of people objecting to our pre op diet and wanting to tweak it to fit their perceived needs, but it applies to post op healing as well.
    I'm glad that the person you quoted was able to get permission to tweak her recovery eating plan (sorry not to use your name, but I don't remember it and iPhone will lose my post if I go back to see). However, the majority of people should realize that they shouldn't tweak their recovery diets just because it's hard, they don't like it, or they're bored.
    I know that some of us (at least me) are reluctant to share the ways we've gone off plan because we don't want to seem like we're giving permission for others to do so. Last month, if I'd seen a post from someone else in their first week post op who'd been able to eat chicken salad without a problem, I'd have been sneaking it off my Mom's plate when she wasn't looking and I'd probably snitch a chip as well. Maybe I'd have gotten sick, maybe I'd have been fine. I would feel bad if I posted about cheating on my plan and someone hurt themselves by copying me.

    32 oz of Water is very little. My program wanted us getting at least 64 oz a day by the 3rd week post op. I would suggest you try to double your water.

    Once I cleared out all my trigger foods from home, I realized that most of my emotional eating happened at work (I'm a teacher). Toward the end of the last school year, I made it a goal not to eat anything except the food I brought with me for lunch. The first student birthday after I started my program's pre op diet was very hard, but I realized that i would be OK if I didn't have a cupcake. The 2nd and 3rd birthdays were easier.
    Instead of celebrating small victories with food, I started buying myself flowers. I also made a little chart to record the # of days I'd ignored head hunger, kind of like a "this many days without an accident" poster. It helped me think about whether or not a food choice was worth going back to zero.

    Sleeved on June 25, got the OK from my program's dietician to start puréed foods this morning. chicken salad paste never tasted so good. Down 15 lbs since surgery.

    I went through NorCal Kaiser (Richmond) and I was also nervous about the psych meeting, probably because I'd never seen a psychologist and had no idea what to expect.
    It was fine. We talked for about 30-45 minutes. She'll want to know about stress in your life, how you cope, what kind of support system you have, etc. The psych appt also screens for other conditions like OCD and schizophrenia, so be aware that some questions will be really weird!

    I managed to lose 30 pounds from September to December of last year. I gained 5 pounds back over the holidays. My breaking point came in January when I gained 5 more pounds. I wasn't going to spend another year of my life trapped in the yo-yo cycle and I started looking into surgical options.

    You'll mess up on your journey. I was 3 months, 10 days following a really reasonable pre op diet, no shakes, no liquid only, and I fell off the wagon, sometimes just a little, other times with a spectacular binge. Cynthia Alexander said it best in "The Emotional First Aid Kit". "You will fall off the wagon thousands of times between now and the end of your life. Falling off the wagon is not the problem. It never has been. It's how long you stay off that's the problem". So cheer up and remember that tomorrow is a new day.

    I was sleeved on the 25th and my incisions are glued closed.
