vhoke1 reacted to Vicki Loichinger in Is The Lap Band Just Sticking Your Toe In The Water?
I was banded seven years ago. And yes that is what it is like, "sticking your toe in the water" I was afraid of doing
anything more invasive or "drastic" as I thought at the time. But I should have went the rny route then and saved myself seven years of up and down weight, still all the comorbities I had and all worse now. I don't have any horror story to say about the band, but it just was either too tight, too loose, and between me and it we just didn't do what we should do. I have lost and gained the same 30 to 40 pounds, and now at my heaviest and sickest. I am waiting for insurance approval to revise from the band to rny. Again, I could have been living life and enjoying health benefits if I had just "jumped all the way in" I hope you have that option.

When I attended a support group the surgeon described lap band as just sticking your toe in the Water where as gastric bypass has less of a chance of regaining weight - I am leaning towards gastric bypass my BMI is 39.5 weight 235 like to lose 100 pounds -- looking forward to meeting with the surgeon on 10/5/12 for my consultation. Any thoughts?

I've seen anything from 1 week to 6 weeks from posts on other boards. Does anyone know an average (if all goes well of course). Just trying to plan for when I get approval and a date.

I went to smoothie king. You can get it "skinny" which means no sugar, but I could not drink a lot. It was a little think.

If I were to oversimplify the choice, I think it comes down to what your biggest behavioral obstacles are.
I ruled out the lap band and sleeve because, as my surgeon said, I could still sip milkshakes and nibble on cheeseburgers until I'd gained another 100 pounds. If you want more freedom to still eat certain things (which is a completely valid reason to opt for one of these - it just depends on self-control) then the sleeve or the band might be for you. However, the percentage of excess weight loss is less for these two than for the RNY.
The sleeve is actually pretty darn close in terms of weight loss to the bypass. And the part of the stomach that distributes a hormone that causes hunger is removed, so that's a great perk. You will have to remind yourself to eat.
I might have chosen the sleeve if my insurance carrier covered it, but they don't. I chose the RNY because I wanted the dumping syndrome, which causes you to get sick if you eat anything too high in fat or sugar. Some people don't want that, but I felt like I needed it to help me change my relationship and behavior with those kinds of foods.
My surgeon has videos that go over each surgery and it's pros and cons on his website: http://poplawskibariatric.com/for-prospective-patients/
If you can, watch those videos because I couldn't have made my decision without them.
    Good luck to you!

Yes! 6 months seems like a long time, but goes by so fast. Let the 6 months be a time to focus on what you need to do for you. Before you know it you will be doing everything you never imagined!

I also had to wait 6 months. Please understand that this necessary. Gods word says, be anxious for nothing ... In due season. If you can't survive six months how will you be able make life long changes. Be strong, be informed and remember all things work in due time. Time will pass by so fast. Nothing good comes over night.

Stay with us, Lindsey! You can do this! Just the fact that you have set yourself on this path shows that you have hope for the future and that you are a strong person who is taking charge of her life. Perhaps in addition to all of the other great suggestions here about using this time to ready yourself, you might want to spend some serious self-reflection time around what you want out of life, where you see yourself after you lose the weight, and establish a plan to get there. I know it sounds cliche, but really it is as simple as planning the work and then working the plan to get where you want to be. Lean on all your resources during this difficult time and let everyone--family, friends, and everyone here--help you. It's a big life change and you deserve the wonderful outcome on the other side of this. Stay the course!
    God bless!
