    Gum

I would stay away from gum after surgery. When you chew gum you swallow air which will bloat you. The gas pains are bad after surgery and adding bloating from chewing gum is not needed. I am 5 years post op and still get bloating from chewing gum. Sent from my Nexus 6 using the BariatricPal App

    Could use a mentor/buddy

I was sleeved 5 years ago and had problems getting my liquids after surgery and had to be hospitalized for borderline kidney failure from severe dehydration. The best advice I can give you is try try water at different temperatures. I was able to drink warm and hot water without issue but the cold water for some reason made my stomach hurt. Hope this helps. Sent from my Nexus 6 using the BariatricPal App

    Approved but scared.

I would say that you would have to be crazy not to be scared. Having surgery is scary. I remember when I was being wheeled into the operating room I was talking to a group of doctors and they asked me if I was scared. I told them that I was but that I didn't have the choice of me not having the surgery. They questioned me saying "you always have a choice". I replied, if I don't have this surgery I will be dead before I turn 30, so to me it's not a choice it's an inevitably. Either I have the surgery and live or don't have it and die. At my highest weight I was 540 pounds, I now weigh 250. This surgery saved my life and it was the best decision of my life. Be strong and remember that you are choosing to have a better life. Good luck. Sent from my Nexus 6 using BariatricPal mobile app

High BMI peeps! Tell me your stories.

I started my journey 5 years ago at 540 pounds. I am 6 foot 2. I am down to 260 pounds which means I lost 280 pounds overall. I no longer suffer from pain in my knees and back, no more blood pressure medication, not borderline diabetic any longer, and sleep apnea is gone. Best decision of my life. Anyone from ohio?

I'm in Cincinnati. I had my sleeve 5 years ago and I am down about 290 pounds overall with my highest weight being 540 pounds. If I had any advice to give it would be to focus primarily on liquids after surgery. After surgery I had to be readmitted to the hospital due to severe dehydration and borderline kidney failure. I was in the hospital for about 4 days getting a Fluid drip and had to work on getting more Water down before I was released . Sent from my Nexus 6 using the BariatricPal App

    Did you find love again?

The simple answer is yes. It took some time but I did. I had to learn how to love myself before I could truly love another. I have found the woman of my life and we are now married. I've been with my wife almost 4 years ( I had surgery 5 years ago). The vsg surgery transformed me in multiple ways and when I look back the only regret I have is not doing it earlier. It's sad but a good amount of relationships don't make it through wls. I think the main reason is because they are built on insecurities and when those insecurities go away everything else crumbles. Sex and more Sex

I would wait a few months ryan.i am here to testify that there is light at the end of the tunnel. I am down over 280 pounds since surgery and my sex drive and performance has skyrocketed. I also gained some length or should I stay recouped some lengthy back since losing all the weight. I am now happily married and we can't keep our hands off each other. The extra stamina has unlocked the inner lioness of my wife and the inner Lion within me. Instant Water works everytime we start messing around. I can't keep my hands off her. I would have the sleeve surgery again, just for the sex benefits alone. We have also mixed it up end the bedroom by adding some toys for her and some light kinky stuff. Before surgery she was begging me not to stop after surgery she is begging me to stop. The biggest thing that I enjoy is that I no longer have to worry about if she is getting hers anymore, it's a given now. Sent from my Nexus 6 using the BariatricPal App

    Hubby not being supportive

He is most likely scared but don't let that change your decision. My surgeon made a statement that changed my entire view of this surgery being elective . his question was " have you ever seen morbidly obese 70 year old ?" I thought for a second and answered "no I have not." He replied "do you know why?" Of course I said "no why?" He then replied " that's because most morbidly obese people die in their 50's and 60's." At that moment I realized that this was literally a life and death decision. I had the surgery almost 5 years ago and have not looked back. I'm down 270 pounds total and could not be happier. Can I eat watermelon?

I am advocating for the OP to follow the instructions his medical team gave him post op. His surgeon gave him the OK to consume the fruit so who am I to state anything different? I am simply trying to give advice about consuming watermelon after surgery after being approved by a medical professional . Let's get back to the original question which was essentially " is it OK to eat watermelon after surgery ". The short answer is yes. Sent from my Nexus 6 using the BariatricPal App

    Can I eat watermelon?

Watermelon has the more sugar than a lot of other melons, if someone wants fruit, there are better options. It is not a low carb fruit. Just because it isn't as high as a pineapple or a banana doesn't mean its low carb. Not to mention it has basically no Protein. We are talking about a person fresh from surgery, not someone in maintenance. @@JMarshall Even right some surgery, Water melon is going to basically be a slider food. Full of sugar, and no protein. Any weight loss patient could sit and eat an entire watermelon if they wanted if they don't dump. It is going down a slippery slope very early on. I am almost 5 years out and I still can't eat a lot of watermelon at 1 time. I have been eating watermelon(juice and slices) since my second month. I am down over 270 pounds as of last week. Yes it can be a slider food but that does not take away it's benefits. I gravitated towards eating cold watermelon because it didn't hurt my stomach early on and hydrated me. Lots of foods are sliders but that does not mean that they are all bad. Just as we cannot blame the fork for being overweight we can't blame watermelon for weight gain. Moderation is key with everything we eat. We can't eliminate everything that has carbs or sugar , but we can be mindful of how much we take in. Sent from my Nexus 6 using the BariatricPal App

    Can I eat watermelon?

I understand your point about calories after surgery, but when you think about how much a person can really consume 1 month post op it's really not a problem. The amount of watermelon that would have to be consumed to gain weight would be impossible for someone 1 month post op(or in this case weeks post op). All sugar is not bad, nor is all carbs bad. I could understand your point of view if we were talking about gummy bears but we are talking about a fruit that has Vitamins and amino acids that will benefit recovery. In the grand scheme of things I don't think consuming watermelon will derail Weight Loss or slow it down. Just my 2 cents. Sent from my Nexus 6 using the BariatricPal App
