Gaining Weight

To give you all a little background information. I started the process with Kaiser February 6, 2013. Kaiser requires that you do the following before your paperwork is submitted to the board for approval.

1. Complete GB1(1st month) and GB2 (4th month) Class

2. Complete a weight control class

3. See a nutritionist for 6 months

4. Get a mental health evaluation

5. Sleep Study

So as of today, I have done the GB1 class, sleep study and have seen my nutrionist twice, my thrid appointment is April 9th. I'm hoping to get my approval for surgery by the end of July and have my surgery the first week in September.

I have been planning to have this surgery since October of last year. I could have started the process sooner, I just had to switch my insurance over to Kaiser, which I did January 1st.

It seems like since I knew I was getting surgery, I had been eating almost everything in sight. Well not really, I've just been eating out almost everyday. I'm not sure if it was becuase I knew that I may nto be able to eat these things again, or if I was eating out of fear. I had a breakdown in February because I realized that everything about my life was about to change. Now, I've been skinny before and I know how my life was then and compared to now, there is a significant difference. I just don't know if I'm mentally ready to take that on right now. I tell myself that I don't have an addiction to food, but for me to go from 180lbs to 305lbs in 10 years says a lot. 305 lbs is my highest weight EVER. I've gotten close to 300 and got scared, seeing myself over 300 has taken a toll on me emotionally. Now I have to loose 15lbs before July 9th with my nutritionist and I'm feeling like I can't. When I know I can because I've done it before. I know it's all a mental game, but I'm loosing.

When I went to see my nutritionist on Feb 12th, she said I had lost 5 lbs. When I went back on March 13th, she told me I gained 2 lbs back. I couldn't understand it. So now I need to loose the 2 lbs that I gained before I go back on April 9th.

Wish me luck!

You can do it! You have already made the commitment to yourself that you are ready for the change by enrolling in this program. We all have self doubt at moments in our life, that is when we need our motivators. Your motivators can be people, pictures, books really anything. I encourage you first to look in the mirror. Really look. Instead of pointing out your flaws focus on the positives that are in that mirror. Then tell yourself 3 things you should already know the first being I CAN DO THIS. The other 2...well those are on you. Mine were I am a confident woman, and no one can make my day but me! If you slip and eat something you shouldnt do not beat yourself up. Recognize you are not perfect and get yourself back on the road to healthy!! Good luck!!

I was only required to lose 2lbs from my surgeon and I lost 6. Is this the insurance or the drs office request? I had many food funerals the month before surgery. I guess I was a little scared and the thought of never eating the quantity of my favorite foods made me do this.

July is a ways off so you can do this. That is 5 lbs a month. Did they say they would not do the surgery if you did not lose 15 lbs by then?

You can do this. One question though - what area Kaiser are you a member of? California, Ohio, Mid-Atlantic? I ask because I am in the Mid-Atlantic and there is definitely a weight list for the surgery. So, once I got my approval from the board, there was about a 6 month wait before being scheduled for surgery. I just realized I spelled it the first time "weight", which I guess is also true.

I am a Kaiser patient...I had my surgery October 2012 and at almost 6 mos out, am down 75lbs. It really does work - BUT - it is also a lot of work. I work out EVERY day, which I never did before...And, I still track everything I eat. Good luck!

Mokee, with Kaiser they want to make sure you have self control so they ask that you loose a certain amount before surgery with the help of a nutritionist. they will still do the surgery they will just push it back until my nutritionist is comfortable. Really its all up to her to submit my paperwork to the board.

Strange fruit, I'm in the Mid-Atlantic. There was a wait list for those who have primary care doctors in MD, DC. But since my primary care is in VA there is no wait list for me. Congrats on your weight loss and thank you!

Hang in there, Samica - you've got this! Just don't let it overwhelm you. You need to lose 2 lbs in the next 11 days. That's your first goal, and it's very short term, but also very doable. KimMarh suggested a liquid diet for a week. That would almost certainly take care of the 2 lbs, and more, but if that seems overwhelming, maybe think about doing protein shakes for breakfast and lunch, then a sensible dinner. You've already cut the carbs, it sounds like, so a lean protein and some healthy veggies would do the trick. Drink lots of water. Try and get 30 minutes of walking in each day, if you aren't doing so already. I'll bet that you could even manage to do the sensible dinner at a restaurant if you put your mind to it, right? Order grilled meats/poultry/fish, no sauce or at the least sauce on the side so you can control it. Ask for your veggies to be prepared without butter. Hey, it's just a little more than a week, right? Easy-peasy.

Once that is done, think about what you need to do to get the other 10 lbs off. You'll have 3 months to do that. That's less than a pound a month. Focus on one week at a time. I'll bet if you try, you could even manage more than 10 lbs before July 9! Keep us posted - we'll be your cheerleaders :)

Thank you SpaceDust, I agree I can do it. I just hate getting on the scale seeing the number go up instead of down. I have a plan and I will definitely let you know how things turn out. Thanks for your support!
