Truth or Consequences

This is a little different from my previous posts in that I'm not going to post about my new stomach, or how much I've lost, or food. I want to talk about telling people about my surgery.

I've been very selective so far about telling people about it. Not at all because of how they might react, but generally because its none of their business. Of course my wife and kids know about it, and even though I told them in confidence, I'm certain that most of my wife's friends (and maybe some acquaintences) probably know. I just know my wife :)

The part that's a little tricky is when when MY friends ask how i've lost the weight. It's easy to say I just don't eat as much or that I'm going to the gym or its a New Year's resolution - all of which aren't lies. But then there's a part of me that really wants to tell them about the surgery - only because I don't want to have to hide anything. So far I've told them on a case by case basis, just making a decision at that moment to tell them or not. But I'm certain a time will come when a friend will approach me asking why I told the truth to another friend and not him. Oh well. I guess the answer is that I didn't feel comfortable telling him at the time he asked! I don't lose sleep over it.

Still the best decision of my life!

More soon,

Joe

I feel the same way as you about telling people. Only my parents and 1 friend knows about my surgery. I am just a very private person and don't care to share my personal life with co-workers and casual acquaintances. I work with about 80 women and they are always sharing every detail of their personal lives and then I hear the catty talking behind each others back. I don't care to be mixed up in any of it. If anyone ever comments on my weight loss, I'll tell them the truth - I cut back on the amount I eat at each meal. I don't have to tell them HOW I managed to cut back. ;-P

I feel the same way as both of you. There have been a couple of women in other departments that have had bariatric surgery in the past years and this one woman constantly cuts them down for doing something "so ignorant" and " taking the easy way out". While she is about 60lbs overweight herself and pays for a gym membership for over a year and hasn't been there once and says she can't understand why she can't lose weight because she says she really doesn't eat that much or bad things while I watch her come in with Burger King or Wendy's for lunch and snacks on microwave buttered popcorn everyday for a snack!!! BUT this woman feels she can cut down other people that have decided to take control over their weight issues and finallyput a stop to the insanity! This woman is just one of many with the same opinion as others which is exactly why we find it hard to tell the " whole" truth. I would love to be able to be 100% truthful and open as this really goes against my

natural grain of being honest and open to a fault but IT IS ME...It doesn't make us dishonest, wrong or indifferent...it's just the society that we live in...a form of self preservation and what we all have to deal with...

I am the complete opposite. Then again, I've had a littany of health issues that friends, co-workers and acquaintances have known about over the last few years. A month before my surgery I started a private facebook group page sorta like a blog. My intent was to have an outlet to chronicle my journey, a place to write etc. Initially I included about 15 close friends and family. This was on Thanksgiving. Today there are close to 100 people following my blog and my progress and cheering me on with incredible support. I am overwhelmed at how well received and how supportive all of these people in my life are to me.

    • I’ve used my Xbox for exercise games too and it can be pretty motivating, especially on days when I don’t want to leave the house. Kinect games really do make you move, and after a session with kickboxing or dancing, I always feel like I’ve actually gotten a solid workout. The controller-free setup feels way more natural for workouts than anything I tried on the Wii. Zumba is fun but definitely takes a little time to get the moves right. Lately, when I’m not working out, I spend time trading CS2 skins and finding new guides on this link. There’s a lot of interesting tips if you’re into games outside of fitness too.

      Einarmige Banditen
