Nervous about the first time i eat soft foods and how to handle lunch when i return to work!

Hi,

I know this is strange but im really nervous about trying softfoods in a couple of weeks.... I am on a 3 week post-op liquid diet per my physician. I have 2 weeks left and I dont know how i will deal with vomiting/sliming/chest pains and whatever else comes along with my new tummy mishaps. Yes i know i decided to have the sleeve and im not regretting my decisions but i dont want the discomfort or the ugly side of the sleeve to become a daily part of my life.... The first day i start soft foods i also return to work . I havent shared with coworkers/ family i had the surgery because i felt they honestly did not need to know and i will share if./when i choose to share. I have struggled with my weight for years and finally had the courage to do something about it but its been very painful, emotional, and extremely difficult. I know i am not the only one that has felt this way and im glad that this forum allows us to express the pain of weight issues/struggles/disappointments. I would greatly appreciate any tips, recipes, ideas on how to start soft foods also how to handle lunch at work!!! Thanks

I went back to work 10 days after surgery. I told no coworkers and hardly any family either. I just felt I didn't need to because it was my business. My advice would be to NOT eat any new foods at work. I had the sliming/vomiting three times and it was the worst, but luckily it was at home. Here is what I ate at work: protein shake on drive in (7am), yogurt (9am), soup (12pm) cottage cheese (3pm) and then I was home for dinner. I typically eat lunch with a group of people in the staff lunchroom, and not one person noticed my change in eating habits or said "you are only having soup?" Try not to think too much about it because you may not have any problems. I've been on mushy foods and have never had any vomiting, sliming or anything. I agree with Karen on not trying new things unless you're at home, just in case you do get sick. Just pay attention to your tell. I get a little pain in my sternum and then I will start to burp....so I stop eating. Measure your foods, no more than 1/4c. at a time, even if you can handle more, until you get used to what your tell will be. Good luck....it's nice getting to eat some protein instead of drink it all the time. Good luck!

Karen thx ssssssoo much for the tips.... I work in a school district with pre-k. I asked to be off 2 additional weeks just to recover from the surgery alone and then i realized OMG i have no idea of how im going to get thru breakfast and lunch at work daily. I dont want to be at work vomiting and having ppl asking whats wrong are u ok etc etc. I am a very private person have been all my life even when i was small. I really appreciate your advice. I had in my mind that i had to take a high protein lunch low carb and pray i dont vomit daily or if i eat to fast. This is allll soooo new to me and im trying to learn as i go!!! Congrats on whatever success you had with your sleeve! :)

I'm on puree right now and can relate to what you are saying. I tried scrambled eggs and they did not work. I didn't puke but kept kind of feeling something come up and stop at my throat. Very uncomfortable and I was glad I had gone slow and only took a couple bites. Don't try new stuff except for at home. I go back to work monday and I'm just going to do shakes or yogurt for now. I'm not sleeved yet...hell, don't even have an idea of a date yet, but the eating at work is frightening for me. I work for the VA and have only 30 mins for lunch and they are very strict about time. I have no idea how I am going to eat slowly if I only have 30 mins to do it in. Also, I plan to take a week off for this...I can't afford more time than that, so I am a bit concerned about that as well.

I did tell people about my surgery. I had to go back to work after two weeks. I took soup and small yogurt cups in the beginning. I don't know where you live, but the excuse of a good cup of soup in the winter to warm you, should fly under the radar ;)

Just eat small bites, slowly, and stop when you feel satisfied - BEFORE you feel full. I've found that I can eat less of the soft foods than the liquids, and the more 'solid' the food, the less of it I can eat before feeling it's time to stop. I haven't had any problem with sliming, etc. yet, and hope to avoid it!

I'm a teacher, and only have 22 minutes for lunch, so I've been eating in my room at my desk even before thinking about surgery - there's just no time to go down to the lunchroom and be able to digest! I've been taking an 8 oz protein shake (in an insulated cup I can shake it up in) and a cup of cottage cheese for my lunch. I eat the cottage cheese during the lunch time, and sip on my shake afterwards while teaching.

    • I’ve used my Xbox for exercise games too and it can be pretty motivating, especially on days when I don’t want to leave the house. Kinect games really do make you move, and after a session with kickboxing or dancing, I always feel like I’ve actually gotten a solid workout. The controller-free setup feels way more natural for workouts than anything I tried on the Wii. Zumba is fun but definitely takes a little time to get the moves right. Lately, when I’m not working out, I spend time trading CS2 skins and finding new guides on this link. There’s a lot of interesting tips if you’re into games outside of fitness too.
