Need Motivation

I am still in the pre-approval stage with my insurance. I am trying very hard to go through all the steps that are required and to also get myself ready for after surgery.

One of the things that I struggle with is motivation to exercise. It's not actually doing the exercise that is the hard part it's the "getting there" that I struggle with. I have a major fear of being judged. One of the things that I love doing is swimming laps. But in order for me to get to the pool I have to have this major internal dialog with myself and convince myself to go. I hate it so much! Does anyone else deal with this and if so, do you have any advice to make going to the gym or exercising easier?

do you live near your pool? or do you go after you get home. Half the battle is getting dressed for the workout. It's something funny about putting those clothes on that gives you the energy to go and do it. You have to figure out a way to 'trick' your mind that you are ready to work out. For me I don't sit down when I come home...I walk the dog...switch my clothes and head out.

Thanks for the comment! I do live very close to the pool I use, which is nice. I guess I have to do what you say, and try to trick myself into going. Changing right away is a good idea too.

Thanks!

I get the feeling! I go in and out with struggling to get myself to go, and it's all a head game for me. I read something once that helped to make the head battle a little easier... just make your daily goal to just put on your gym clothes and get to the gym.. don't think about being miserable once your'e there or how much time you have to put in. Get over the hump of just getting dressed and going - that is totally doable! Then, once you're there, chances are you're going to do the rest.

Sounds stupidly simple, but it worked for me!! Good luck!!

I am in the 6th month diet phase for approval and totally understand. However, I did call a local wellness center today and inquired about membership etc... That's a start! The main reason I called this gym was because they had a "endless pool"! They also have a sauna, showers with all supplies, even steam showers! Now that is motivation! Little steep for my budget but I think it is worth it! I am a teacher and can go after school do my workout or swim laps, shower and be refreshed to go home and well you know...

    • I’ve used my Xbox for exercise games too and it can be pretty motivating, especially on days when I don’t want to leave the house. Kinect games really do make you move, and after a session with kickboxing or dancing, I always feel like I’ve actually gotten a solid workout. The controller-free setup feels way more natural for workouts than anything I tried on the Wii. Zumba is fun but definitely takes a little time to get the moves right. Lately, when I’m not working out, I spend time trading CS2 skins and finding new guides on this link. There’s a lot of interesting tips if you’re into games outside of fitness too.
