Day 30: "Mixed Feelings"

I am wondering if anyone had breast reduction/reconstruction after having WLS, and if so: How long did you wait and was it covered by insurance?

I am very well endowed genetically. When I gained weight, I went from a 34DD at 135lbs. to a 40H at 265lbs. I visited a plastic surgeon in October, and he was the one who mentioned the VSG option to lose weight. In fact, it was made me decide to have VSG done. He highly recommended that I lose the weight first, then have the surgery once I was at maintenance weight. Having the surgery at my highest weight would increase my chances of risks, longer hospital stay, etc. He said that losing even 50lbs. would reduce those chances by more than half.

I've never liked having large breasts. I'm an active person and they get in the way. Not to mention trying to find bras, clothes, and bathing suits that fit. I usually have to order my bras from strange online retailers and spend outrageous amounts of return shipping and restocking fees when they don't work. It's not like I can just buy a bra at a local department store for $20! I love to swim, but my only option for bathing suits is a place in the mid-west that makes custom suits. They are close to $180 a pop! And as good as they are, they still don't support me all that well and they fall apart after 15-20 swims. I guess they are made more for those who sit by the pool than actually get in the pool. In regular tops and jackets, I still have to buy 1-2X just to cover my chest, while the rest of me is swimming in fabric. I am easily a size 14 in my arms and waist if that helps make a visual.

I know my breasts are going to be my nemesis during the weight loss process. I've lost 34lbs. and haven't budged in the bra department other than I changed from a 40 band size to 38. I'm going to be very disappointed if I don't lose the boobs.

I'm already daydreaming of having breast reduction as soon as I hit goal. Although we want to have kids, so if I'm able to conceive we may wait a little longer. They are terribly uncomfortable and such a pain. I tried swimming at a new gym yesterday and had a freaky, creepy old man staring at me the whole time. I stayed only 10 minutes before leaving in shame and embarrassment. I've been stared at since high school when I developed, and have always gotten more attention from the male-sex than I ever welcomed. I've been groped at concerts, unable to get security to do anything. I get cat calls when I'm out trying to walk for my health, nasty things.

I can't wait until they are gone and I can have a normal life.

My mom and I was just talking about this topic earlier today. I haven't been sleeved yet, but after reading several posts on here I am wondering if I will actually lose these things once the weight starts falling off? I too am genetically well endowed so I worry they won't go down much :(

I know what a pain they are too (especially in the back)! I hope yours start to shrink soon! Maybe they will be the last thing to go.

I haven't been sleeved yet...but I did have breast reduction when I was 19 and it was one of the BEST decisions I have ever made. I'm 5'5 and at the time I weighed about 145ish and had E/F size breasts. After surgery I went down to a small size C. Now that I've almost doubled my weight (wince) I have a large D.

Before the surgery, though, my back killed me on a daily basis. The key to getting insurance companies to pay for it is to make sure they see it as a health problem, not a vanity problem. Ie- your back/shoulderneck hurts, your bra straps dig into your shoulders, you get tension headaches at the base of your skull, its causing your spine to go out of alignment etc. You might want to start laying some groundwork with your GP or a chiropractor now. My doctor was absolutely amazing and its important to find one that you trust and who also knows how to work with the insurance companies!

As for my recovery, it was actually rather painless. I stayed with my parents and my mom was amazing and made sure that I was on a continuous round of painkiller so I was at a constant therapeutic level. In fact, they had to call the doctor so she would tell me that I needed to rest because I was up be-bopping around! I'm fair skinned, so it took awhile for the scars to fade but now you can barely notice them. Frankly, I wouldn't have cared if it had made me look like Frankenstein as long as my personal torture devices went away!

Good luck and if you have any questions about before, during, after, whatever feel free to message me!

At the time of my VSG I was a 44H. 18 months later I am a 34 DDD. I have lost 125 lbs but even though I've lost volume, the breasts are still there, just deflated =(. That DDD cup still isn't adequate to properly contain all the empty skin and I'm not even at goal yet. I'm afraid that when I am at goal, in another 40 lbs, that I will be a 32DD, and it will all be empty shriveled skin! =( =( I intend to get total body reconstruction after achieving goal, I think a mid C cup would be just fine.

I am curious too. I have a large chest, and I have been thinking about what I am going to do with the boobies. When I was lighter three years ago my boobies went down to a 38DDD. My boobies never had that perkiness. Like the other poster said, in order for insurance to cover it, you have to show that it is causing issues. I have heard the same thing for the tummy tuck. Show that it's causing some skin rashes etc. I also heard that insurance may not cover both, but all insurances are different so I do not know how true that is. I do know that I won't have any work done until at goal. No sense in me doing it not at goal, but I will start the process near goal so once I'm there I've already waited the recommended amount of time.
