"mommy Are You Smaller Yet?"

So I had my blood work done yesterday and my gallbladder ultrasound. Tomorrow I start my pre op diet. Friday I meet with the nutritionist. I'm so excited but also super nervous. I'm so ready for this.

I've been telling my daughter who is three that I'll be having surgery and I'm going to get smaller/Skinny. So on a daily basis she asks "mommy are you skinny yet" lol.. I say no not yet and try to explain to her that I will be normal size or the size of her aunt or my mom (who are both average size) then I will be "skinny".. she looks at me all sweet and concerned and says "but I don't want you to be a skinny mommy I can't love you if your skinny". She is so confused I say I'm going to be smaller/ healthier and she says "but where is the rest of you going to go? I will miss you".. I just keep telling her she will be able to love me more and longer because I will be healthy and alive alot longer now. It makes me happy that she loves me no matter what but also sad that she has no idea how much more fun we could have if I wasnt so big now.

I am even more sure that this is the right choice for me.

My younger son, 9 yrs old, had similar issues. He didn't want his dad to look different than what he is used to. Change can be hard on kids but I also think they are so very adaptable. It doesn't happen over night and they adjust as we change. For a lot of people here, our kids or loved ones are a major reason we have the surgery. We simply want to be with them as long as we can.

Good luck and best wishes.

That's so sweet.

My 5 year old son is the same way. I lost 27 lbs on the pre op diet and he said "Mommy, I can give you bigger hugs." He told all of his friends at school that I had surgery to be healfy. LOL!

Merydia710,

you have made such a smart choice! It is hard for the little ones to "get it"! Even my 7 year old grand daughter can't grasp or understand the whole weight loss thing. I just had my surgery in June of last year, and she saw me on an almost daily basis before and after my surgery, doesn't comprehend or understand the whole thing.

When I make a comment to her mother about how much I have lost, she will say "did you lose weight Grandma? You look the same to me." I am now smaller than her mother (who weighs a normal weight for 5'3") and she still doesn't understand that I used to weight twice as much as her mother. It is just so hard for the younger ones to grasp any of it.

But take heart in the fact that you are on the road to being healthier, and willl still be around to love your daughter when she is an adult. Something that she can not appreciate right now, but surely will when she grows up! My two daughters tell me all the time how happy they are with my weight loss, as they know I will be around a lot longer to bug them, be there for them, etc. now that I am healthier and slimmer!

I just had my lapband removed and am getting prepared to have my sleeve in 3 months. My 9 year old asked me on the phone from hospital "are you skinnier yet mom"? so cute.

For my daughter this has been a great learning curb - she loves to eat - she is not too big yet, but seeing my surgery and what I have been through - she seems more interested in being healthy and walking our dog more. This can only be a positive thing. She is mature and totally understands all the implications of being overweight. If this helps save her the misery of what I have been through in my life - then it is worth every bit of it.

    • I’ve used my Xbox for exercise games too and it can be pretty motivating, especially on days when I don’t want to leave the house. Kinect games really do make you move, and after a session with kickboxing or dancing, I always feel like I’ve actually gotten a solid workout. The controller-free setup feels way more natural for workouts than anything I tried on the Wii. Zumba is fun but definitely takes a little time to get the moves right. Lately, when I’m not working out, I spend time trading CS2 skins and finding new guides on this link. There’s a lot of interesting tips if you’re into games outside of fitness too.
    • I'm literally almost crying reading this. Mostly because I'mon this pre-op diet and these last two days have been difficult... but also because I needed this! Thank you! Congrats!
