Pre-op Diet... Phase 1

LonnieThatGirl

These were the phase one diet instructions given to me from my doctor office:

1. Cut meal portions in half

2. No starches or simple sugars: no breads, pasta, rice, candy, or other sweets. This includes cereal, bagels, oatmeal, granola bars and anything made of grains.

3. Eat lean proteins: chicken, fish, beef, pork, eggs

4. Have a fresh fruit or vegetable with every meal.

5. Consume 2-3 serving of dairy per day: low fat milk or low fat yogurt only

6. Exercise at least five (5) days per week. Increase the intensity and time every week. You may start with a brisk walk or swimming and increase by 10 minutes each week.

Well, I certainly have not been perfect during this time. I've run into a little issue with eating absolutely no carbs. Although when I do have a carb, I have chosen healthy ones (eg a wheat wrap or fiber bar) - it's more of the fact that I forget and then remember afterwards I cannot eat it. KWIM? But, still I need to completely cut them. I can say, however, that as the last week and a half has progressed, I find that I am getting better and thinking more about my choices and feel like I've improved.

I have already dropped 9 pounds as of this morning. I need to lose 6 more pounds before surgery, but I am sure this will not be a problem. Especially since I still have my phase 2 diet starting on July 15 (2 weeks liquid diet before surgery). So although I have had a couple cheats with the carbs, I have made good carb choices at least. And, the longer I am on phase one of the diet, the more I have been sticking to it - which gives me hope that I can stick to the strick guidelines after surgery. I am ready for this... with the exception of a few lingering fears that I hope to ease through researching this site and ease when I talk to the doctor at preop appt on July 14.

Goal for today... Remember not to eat any carbs!

I can sympathize with you about the pre-op diet. My surgeon told me to cut out carbs. He said IF I HAD to have carbs, to keep it below 40 gm of carb per day. Well 40 gm of carb per day is almost NONE. I managed, but wouldn't want to be on a carb free diet forever. I loved eating steak, chicken, turkey, etc. I am a big meat eater. But OH did I want some pasta, potatoes, rice, bread, etc with my steak! I lost 20 pounds on the pre-op diet, but it was the worst two weeks of my life as far as eating. I am on solids now, and trying to stick to low carbs, but I do eat a little bit of potatoes, or a littel bit of rice. We are entertaiing tonight, and I made two different kinds of home made ice cream, and a pound cake for our dessert. I intend to have a very small serving of one of them for my dessert. Although I know that my capacity is so limited that I will probably only get one taste of the ice cream and none of the cake. I can only eat four or five small bites and I am full. If I swallow even a single bite after I get that "full" signal, I am physically uncomfortable. So I eat SLOW, SLOW. SLOW. and try to listen to my body and stop before I hit the full stage.

Good luck on Phase 1 and Phase 2 of your pre-op diet. And best wishes for a successful outcome with your surgery!

Thanks so much for your post. It's nice to get glimpses of what it will be like after surgery! I had croutons in my salad for lunch yesterday, but I figured it was so minimal that it couldn't have been too bad? Yeah, carbs are a hard one for me... I do like the proteins portion though! lol Love steak and chicken! But, I am like you, I love carbs! I look forward to a day when my thought process of food is different. For now, I am just trying to make it through this holiday weekend... My sister makes a really great pasta salad that I cannot have (but have been craving!), and so she said she was going to make chicken salad instead so I wouldn't be tempted. Such a sweet gesture...Thanks again for your post!

Hey hang in there I haven't started my pre-op diet. I have to say that I'm a little nervous but I know it will be ok. It's reading about other peoples journey's that seem to help. Thanks for sharing!
