Finally Told My Family

When I first decided to get the band I only talked about it with people whom I see me every day. Because we are a military family I am far from my actual family it would be easy to keep my surgery from them. But I really felt I wanted to tell my brother and sister in law that I was going through this process.

I finally talked to both my brother and his wife this past week. I am so glad I did. I really needed to tell people who truly care about me and my well being. They are concerned for my health but they are happy that I am making an educated decision on something I want to do.

I received my sleep study results yesterday and I am in the clear in that respect. It looks like all I have left are 2 nurtritionist meetings and 1 support group meeting due in February.

I'm getting very close to the end!!! So very excited!!!!!teeth_smile.gif

outside of my brother no one in my family knows that i am having this surgery. my mom is going to go nuts when she finds out...she is so critical and i just don't need that right now as i have already made such a big, life changing decision to have wls. what was your brother and sister-in-law's response?

We, my husband and I, told neither family. I never speak/see my family so that's not an issue. His family would have tried to talk me out of it. We just felt like this was a decision we made as a couple and wanted to keep it private for as long as we could. Kind of like getting pregnant! It will come out one day but by then I'll have more sucess behind me and will be fine.

I told my family, but didn't tell my co-workers. I did talk with a few people that I knew already had it done and have talked to some poeple that I thought could benefit from the surgery but I just felt that my co-workers did not need to know my personal business. I had my realize band in May of 2010 and have lost almost 100 lbs so it has come off slow. Not how I wanted it but the doctor says that is best. I go every two months to the doctor and last month was the only time I gain any weight . . . yes, I really screwed up at Christmas this year. My kids talked me into making peanut brittle again and that goes down really good(too bad). Why is it that all the stuff you are not suppose to eat goes down so good, lol.

At first I was ashamed that I had to have the band put in to lose weight and I couldn't do it by myself . . . didn't have the will power. I don't feel that way any more because everyone that has had the lap band knows that it is not the band alone that helps you lose weight but it takes a lot of work on your part to make it work. It is hard to convince people that this is true but I know it is and I know I have worked hard.

Good Luck!!!

Betty

It's a relief to know others have decided to keep their surgery private.

I told My husband and My Aunt. Haven't told my children age 13/10. My Daughter is recovering from weight issues so her therapist thought it was best not to at this stage.

Finally told my Mother in law. Didn't tell her prior she would of worried too much.

I have told a handful of co workers/friends. So far they are very supportive and keeping it private. I don't expect forever. If I had it to do over I wouldn't tell them. I will always have to worry if they decide to share my secret. One of BFF told one our co workers and I pleaded her to respect my privacy. Like I posted on FB if you want a secret to remain a secret only tell God. I had surgery in December and have lost 33 lbs. Very satisfied. I didn't want my job to know because I feel people don't understand. They think you are taking the easy way out. I didn't want people looking at me like an experiment.. like what is she eating? can she eat that? how much weight has she lost? etc...

I can already tell how much better I feel since the weightloss. I can walk without getting out of breath. My clothes are getting loose and I am exercising again.

Had my second fill - have some difficulty eating : ( waiting to see if it improves. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and feelings. it helps
