Problems With Esophagus

Hi, I had my realize band put it on May 3, 2010. I've lost 93 pounds. It is going very slow. I'm doing what I should, it just took a long time to get resistants and then I started losing 6-7 pounds every 2 months when I went back to my doctor. Once I got resistance my doctor would put in only 1/4 cc for each visit without doing the swallow test. Christmas season 2010 I did great . . . Christmas 2011 not so good. I put on 8 pounds but the day after Christmas I got right back to work and lost those 8 pounds very fast within two weeks.

About 2 weeks ago went back to my doctor and he was going to do a fill but wanted to do it with the xray swallow test. When I swallow that white stuff my esophagus did nothing. Did not spasm like it should and when the liquid got down to the bottom, just before my stomach my esophagus expanded. Since then I have realized that it is not normal for phlem to come up while I am eating (not food). I just swallow and continue to eat slowly. I went on the internet and it seems to describe what is called dysphagia.

I had an upper Gi endoscopy and it show everything is ok except there is a little irratation at the bottom of my esophagus and the doctor has prescriped Nexium (2 a day for 2 weeks and then after that 1 a day). He did take some biopsies of a few things in the bottom of my stomach but said he is sure they are nothing to worry about, the were very small.

Has anyone had and problems like this. I haven't been on this blow for more than a year and I hope that I can get back to find out what anyone says about it. But please give me your input.

Thanks a million.

Hi, well it looks like I'm in the same boat as you.

I had my surgery May 5,2011 and everything has been fine until my last adjustment 5 days ago. I went in on Tuesday and got 1cc but by the time I got home I could drink anything. It got worse as the night progressed so my husband called my surgeon (because the ER said they could do nothing for me due to it be a "specialty" situation), my doctor told my husband to take to his office the next day and to give my HOT TEA in the mean time (but that wouldn't go down either). I went to my doctor the next day (Wednesday) and he took out 1/2 a cc that he had put in. It was instant relief and I drank the water fine. I was fine Thursday but when Friday came along forget it... From Friday to this morning, even water is coming back on me and I've lost 11 pounds since Tuesday... So NOT healthy...

I'm not sure what to do tho and it gets to be very painful...

Hi again, and thanks for the commments.

I still haven't heard the results of my endoscopy but hopefully the doctor will call on Monday. I do have another appointment with him on March 7th. As far as the problem with eating and fluids it is not as bad. My husband pointed out that I seemed to have more problems after the endoscopy so maybe my stomach was swollen a little. I was beginning to think the doctor actually left more in my band than he thought. I think he said he has put 10.5 cc in up to date, and I have the realize band. I forget how much can actually fit in there. Last night for the first time my dinner went down without a problem and I was actually able to drink water shortly after dinner. Before I couldn't drink for several hours after I ate. I have never had the problem drinking to wash down the food which is what they tell you not to do. If I would try and even take a sip of fluids while I was eating that would be the end of my eating . . . couldn't get another thing down after the sip of water. So I've always waited until later to take a drink.

The good news is that I lost 4 pounds since my last visit to the doctor which was about 3 weeks ago. The most I have lost since my surgery in May 2010 is 7 pounds in two months, so I think I'm back on the right track (as long as the tests all come out good). I'm just afraid the doctor will want to take all the fluid out of my band if my esophagus still balloons out when I take the swallow test. I need to still lose about 60 pounds.

nerdybrat: I hope that things are better for you. You are right 11 pounds in less than a week is not good. Please write back and let me know how you are doing. I don't get on the computer often so please don't get discouraged if I don't respond right away. My husband had lap band put in just one month before me in April 2010. He lost all of his weight in about a year. He only had 100 pounds to lose and he has been able to keep it within 5 lbs up or down. The great thing about him is he was taking a lot of insul twice a day and now he is not on any diabetic meds at all. I know men loose faster than women but it was hard for me to see him losing so fast and me just losing a little each week. The thing is I was exercising also and he wasn't. We were eating about the same diet, or he was eating a little more than me. We just had our blood tests done on Saturday and I am worried his A1C will be higher. Last time it was 6.1. He has not been watching his surgar intake by having cappicinos in the morning and tends to eat more carbs than he should. Hopefully everything works out for him. I will be thinking of you and hope when I hear from you again you will have good news.

tat1too: So sorry to hear you are having the problems you are. I've have not heard of this issue before. Can you have the band removed? Has it done any good for you at all, meaning have you lost your weight and have you become more healthy because of it. I've never really had to puke, but have had sliming. I'm going to ask my doctor about that problem, if he has had patients that their body reject the band after several years, I will want to know what to watch for. I know that when I was really having problems getting anything down I was willing to go on just a liquid diet rather than have the fluid removed. Of course I have not talk to my doctor about this because he has not suggested removing everything yet. I just read about that happening to people on the intenet. I am willing to do almost anything to keep it in and filled so I can continue to lose weight.

I have a really good doctor. His name is Rantis and he works at Alexian Brothers and St Alexis hospitals. Some bad news we received is that our insurance company sent us a letter yesterday saying that they have not renewed their contract with those two hospitals . . . I don't kow what I'm going to do if I lose my doctor, I have so much trust in him.

Sorry for going on so long . . . hope to hear from both of you agian. I thought that I would get an email notice when someone commented on my blog but I didn't get anything. Probably don't have things set up right, but I will come back and check my blog. It's been nice to meet both of you.

Betty
