To tell or not to tell?

Well, today I went for my pre-op testing and all is good to go. This is my first blog and I'm a little rusty. I'm scheduled to be banded on 7/26 and getting pretty excited. I just hope the insurance company doesn't hold it up for any reason.

I have definitely been feeling stressed recently, not because of the surgery but more because of my family's reaction to the surgery. I expected them to be skeptical but my sister is being downright nasty and unsupportive and has basically told me never to bring it up again to her. So.... I wonder, do I tell anyone else or am I better off keeping it to myself? I'm afraid that if this is how my family is reacting how will my friends and co-workers act? I definitely need support but I don't want the added stress..

I know exactly how you feel. I told the one person that I thought would be completely supportive given she has struggled with her weight her whole life too. Her reaction was so negative, that I told her I changed my mind and have not told anyone since. I had my gall bladder out last year and so people think that I am going back in for surgery due to something of that nature. I have become addicted to this site and it is a wealth of support and advice. I am getting banded on the 22nd and can't wait for the journey. Good luck and feel free to message me anytime!

For now, dont tell anyone that you are not 100% positive will support you! Its not worth it and you can decide at any point later to tell...peoplehave huge issues even with other people's weight (because of their own, Iguess) so just be careful and go slow!

I can relate totally to how what you're experiencing. I found out last week that I have been approved for banding and my surgery is scheduled for 7/21. I've only told my mother who is very supportive, although I initially thought she wouldn't be. My co-workers and a few friends have negative opinions regarding weight-loss surgery so I am not going to let them know. I have explained my beginnning the liquid diet on my desire to lose weight. I've waited too long for this and will not let the opinions of others ruin it for me. Good luck!!

My family as well as my church family, have been supportive. However, I chose to not tell people at work. It kind of sucks now, because everyone's like "How are you doing it?" and I'm just tell them exercise and I had to change how I eat. Which, is technically true, they just don't know it's because I have band. I've almost slipped up a couple times and told people, but have remembered just in time. The only people I told at work were the nurse (just in case) and my boss, who is so super cool, that he said he'd take my secret to his grave. I loved that.

I don't understand why some people aren't supportive, but just remember you're doing it for yourself. I'm so happy I got the band. It's a process, the band doesn't work by itself, you still have to work at it.

Good luck to you.

Thank you so much for all the feedback, it definitely helps to know that I'm not alone and I don't feel so bad for keeping it from friends and co-workers. I did tell my boyfriend finally and his reaction was much better than I anticipated and I feel less stressed that he knows now.
