Diabetes II remission

I'm not sure what the medical parameters are to say officially that my Diabetes is in remission, but the news is great so far. Prior to the pre-op diet on June 5, I was taking 1,000 mg of metformin per day (with last meal). The blood work I had done in April showed a fasting glucose of 107. They told me not to take metformin the day before surgery and when they checked my fasting glucose the day of surgery it was 76. Wow! That's the first time I can remember I've had a fasting number under 100 (100-124 = pre-diabetic/insulin resistant; 125 and over = diabetic are the medical standards I've been told). I have not taken metformin since prior to my surgery on June 24. I've continued to monitor my blood sugar and the low numbers continue!! This morning my fasting number was 75. I go to my family doctor in a few weeks and she wants me to bring my meter so we can discuss. I got down to my current weight 2 years ago through diet and exercise and my metformin was still needed - just reduced to 750 mg a day. Of course, when I put 30 lbs back on I needed the 1,000 again.

So grateful for my health. Besides looking better, getting around easier, feeling better about myself --- I'm going to live longer thanks to this surgery! I knew it would resolve the Diabetes but I didn't know it would do it PRIOR to surgery!

That is terrific!! That has always been one of my fears is becoming diabetic! My mom has it really bad...she is seriously considering the band now. The only requirement she doesn't meet is the BMI so we will see! I wish you the very best you are doing really well!

Hi, Blondi:

What great news. Diabetes is a very scary disease. It is actually the reason I had the lap-band to begin with.

The night before my surgery I was told to take 1/2 of my metformin. Usually I take 500mg 2x a day. After the surgery I was told to remain on 250 mgs 2x a day, which is great. Last week I went for my blood work and on Tues I will see my primary. I am hoping she says I don't need the medication any longer, but we will see.

Keep on track and best of luck to you.

I am also a diabetic and I am in the process of getting the band, I am wanting so bad to get read of the diabetes I hate taking the medication and feeling tired and ect all the time. I have two small children and I am doing this operation for them and my self so I can be around longer to see them grow up and be able to do things with them. I gained weight my self after I got married and thats when I noticed the diabetes. So hopefully I can have a great out come like you..Congrats on the operation and diabetes.
