While going through my testing (labs, abdominal ultrasound, chest x-ray etc...) I found out that I have a severe vitamin D deficency. Strange. They gave me a prescription for some mega vitamin D dose that I will take once a week. Has any one heard of this? I've looked it up and nothing seems to fit for me. Any one heard of this??

I also was put on a high dose (5,000 iu) once a week for 8-12 weeks. I guess I was low too.Have had blood work since and I guess everything is ok. :thumbup: Hope so anyway.

DH discovered this about two years ago. Here in Australia, our sun is VERY strong and skin cancer is our biggest national health concern. Most Australians will have experience of some kind of cancerous skin changes within their lifetime. So we slip slop slap (shirt, sunscreen, hat) and avoid the sun at all costs, unless like me you're simply too vain to resist in the summer time. DH being of English heritage with the peaches and cream complexion to match, lol, avoids sun like the plague. He also works in an office from about 7.30 am to 6.30 pm every day and doesnt pursue that many active outdoor pursuits except when he's on holidays. When he does venture out, its 30+ all over.

Whereas I would only apply the 30+ if I were going to be out all day, like at the beach.

He developed a Vitamin D deficiency purely from lack of exposure to the sunlight. He got outside, its just he was covered head to foot in sunblock and clothing.

He went on a short course of supplements - during which time his mood picked up noticeably - he had been suffering from mild anxiety and depression and all the non specific yet very real back pain he'd been having disappeared.

Since then he does make sure to get 10 or 15 minutes outside at lunchtime and more on the weekend WITHOUT sunblock and he's never had a problem again.

I was extremely low too when I went in for my lab work. I asked my doctor if I'd ever been low before. He didn't know because Vitamin D is not something that is tested for on a regular blood panel! 1 billion people worldwide are Vitamin D deficient and most don't even know it. I was prescribed 150,000 IU's per week for 4 weeks and now I'm on 50,000 per week. After much reading, the benefits of Vitamin D being at normal levels and the risks of it being deficient, are reason enough for everyone to ask their doctors to check them...you're not alone!

I got my blood results back last week, I was told i have high vitamin D, all other bloods normal, my colesterol is now 5.0 from 7.4 & hair falling out but not panacking as i have thick hair

When I had labs done for my yearly physical, they came back showing a deficiency in vitamin D. My pcp prescribed 1000 iu per day. She said it was very common here in Maine during the winter for people to be low on vitamin D. The follow up labs I had done 2 months later showed no deficiency.

Vitamin D deficiency is pretty common in the asian populations. Mine is low, and I'm on 2x week 50,000 supplements until my levels are improved.

It sucks...we can't really absorb calcium citrate either if you are D deficient. I'm getting my levels checked every 3 months now.

I am Vitamin B-12 defiicient and Folate deficient and Vit D deficient. I believe all have been caused by my band!

I'm low EVERY time I get bloodwork done...and they specifically check for it now. I've been given prescriptions for it where I took it every third day for 6 weeks. Now I make sure I supplement with a Vit. D in addition to my calcium (w/D), and multi vitamin. What you don't use is "stored" in the fat....you'd think I'd have a surplus but apparently not.

I to am vitamin d deficient. I found this out a couple of years ago when I was getting increasingly more tired. The doc gave me rx for 50,000iu vit d2 yet it did nothing for six months then the doc changed me to vit d3. It made a great difference.

I didn't know there was a difference but after research I learned alot. So if d2 is not working for you ask for d3.

I have a history of Vit D deficiency. I typically take 50,000 iu pills three times a week. My rheumatologist had me stop taking them a while ago, and low and behold I am low again. So I'm back to taking them. I have a history of Rheumatoid arthritis and Lupus, which may contribute to the deficiency.

Being deficient in Vitamin D is quite common anymore, sadly. Our lifestyles have seen to that. Sunscreen blocks the absorption of Vitamin D and our diets of processed foods also prevent proper balance of Calcium and Vitamin D absorption.

I take 10,000 iu daily. Vitamin D has been shown to prevent and even reverse conditions like osteoporosis, spinal degeneration and CANCER. Yes, that's right, cancer. Vitamin deficiencies are largely, if not entirely, responsible for most disease today. A lot of overweight people are vitamin D deficient. Vitamin D is absorbed through fat cells so The more fat cells you have the more it's absorbed too soon before it is allowed to process through your body. This is what my doctor told me at least :-) I'm vitamin D deficient as well.

I had my final appointment today and an VD deficient too! They just gave me tablets.
