Bandsters Nov 17-21

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

I had talked with several of you who said you were interested in keeping in touch since we were being banded the same week... so I set up a thread for the week of Nov. 17-21. I am being banded by Dr. Kirshenbaum in Denver on Nov. 19th. I had a phone consult with him yesterday and everything is a go!

Im starting to get all nervous/excited...

Do any of you have to go on pre-op diets? If so what does yours consist of?

I have my surgery Nov. 20, so I don't start my pre-op diet until Nov. 10. In the last few months though, I have just been "practicing"... aka chewing more, trying not to drink with meals, eating more Protein, and getting in lots of Water.

i'm not nervous... yet! but i am definitely excited!

Hi Everyone!

Thanks for starting this thread, Allyson....great idea! Now we can all keep track of our surgeries and support each other! And since I'm not planning on telling anyone about my surgery but my hubby and Aunt, I need all the support here I can get!

Hi Janesays: My surgery is the same day as yours....I have to go on a "liquid" diet for two weeks prior to surgery....but it doesn't just consist of drinking Protein liquids, I can have Jello, Soup, carnation instant Breakfast (no sugar added)....there's more but I don't have my list in front of me so I can't remember....but I do remember that the day before surgery its strictly liquid (Medifast). Like you, I have also been practicing...chewing slower, trying to eat smaller portions....but I'm having a really hard time with not drinking while eating....I don't know about you guys, but this one is SO tough for me. Great to meet you and look forward to keeping in touch!

I have been eating really bad these last few weeks....I swear, I am totally addicted to SWEETS! I can go all day without wanting anything but the minute I get off the train to go home, BOOM....it hits me like a ton of bricks that I NEED something sweet...it doesn't help that I HAVE to walk past a Dunkin Donuts and the stationary store that carries all kinds of artery clogging junk like ring dings and yodels...I'M SO WEAK! And after I walk in to one of these stores and pick out a couple of things to eat on the car ride home, I don't give a rats a-- that I have NO BUSINESS eating this stuff...then once I'm done eating I'm like, what the h--- did I just do that for? This has been my life the last month...I think its a combination of being plain ole' addicted to sweets and thinking that in just a few short weeks I won't be eating this stuff anymore thanks to the band, so what the hell!

Anyhoo, that's my rant! I look forward to keeping in touch with everyone and helping each other get through this. I'm excited and scared all at the same time! Coming here and talking with all of you on this board has truly helped me these last few months! THANKS!

Night all!

Welcome Cappy! We are glad to have you!!!

I can totally relate to your cravings for sweets... cakes, Cookies.. etc are my weakness... which is EXACLTLY what got me to this place in the first place...

My pre-op diet is very different from yours. I am allowed solid foods all the way up until 10 pm the night before my surgery...

HOWEVER...(lol) I am not allowed any complex carbs... no breads, potatoes, rice... anything really starchy... it's basically phase 1 Atkins... But I can have fruit and simple sugars (sugar in coffee... etc)

So it wont be terrible... i have started already... I have really tried to slow down eating... thats my problem.. I am so used to scarfing down my lunch really fast and getting back to work.. so this will be my hardest problem... and letting go of my diet coke... epecially when i eat. I love diet coke.(

Are you guys having to take supplements? My Dr. suggested a chewable multi-Vitamin and a protien supplement... Just curious.

Talk to you guys soon!!!

cappy: so great "meeting" you too! I haven't had as much of a problem with sweets as I have trying to reduce the sodium/carbs. Also, I definitely think my biggest problem is not drinking with meals! I have had some success cutting a lot of things out of my diet, but that is one thing I have no idea how to do..

angieangel: another nov. 20! it will be sooner than we think! i am self pay too, but my doctor has me on a ten day pre-op diet like the rest of his patients. I am nervous about it, but I am kind of looking at it as my last chance to prove to myself that I have *some* will-power. I can handle 10 days..... hopefully! p.s.... love the texas flag picture! I too am a misplaced Texan (I live in Missouri right now, and that is where I will have my surgery). Where in TX are you from?

Kerri,

We are so glad to have you! Yeah the clear liquid diet doesn't sound fun to me either!!! I have 2 days of clears following surgery... but not prior. I have already started a high protien, low carb diet which is what my dr. requires 2 weeks before surgery... I have lost 12 lbs so far! It's like I told my Dr. I have NO problem losing weight! Its the keeping it off that is my problem!!! Good luck with everything. It will be great to keep contact with everyone being banded the same week!

Hi Ladies!

I'm scheduled to be banded on November 17th, so I thought I'd join this group too!

I'm soooo happy to have a surgery date! It's been a fairly fast process for me - started the process in August, had my psych and nutrition consults in September, plus an info session with the surgeon in October. I've attended two different support group meetings - one in September for bypass patients, and a new one in October for banded patients. I have a one-on-one consult with the surgeon on Nov 11th, and then I'll be banded!:wub::w00t:

Nice to meet the rest of you - I am not required to do a pre-op diet (doc told me just don't GAIN any weight) but I am going to do a partial liquid to get used to it. Two Protein shakes plus a normal meal, with fruit for Snacks if needed. I've already lost 10 on my own pre-op eating and exercise plan, and my goal is to lose another 10 before surgery.

Hi All, I'm having my Surgery on Tuesday November 18th YAHOOOO!!! I'm so excited.... I'm scared to be excited because I have an appt. with the Surgeon on Monday and I just want to scream with Excitment. I'm not sharing my surgery with co-workers and only a select friends the judgment from others has been difficult to swallow.

Hi all!

I live in Allen, AngieAngel!

I am scheduled for surgery on 11/21/2008 with Dr. Manuel Castro through TLCEdge. I am paying cash.

Preop will be for two weeks prior to surgery consisting of six Protein shakes a day, all the broth, SF Jello and SF popsicles. I have been practicing with this some days and do really well. Other days I really struggle with an insane desire to eat everything I can while I still can. I keep reminding myself that I won't be giving up everything, just bread, gum and carbonation most likely!

I am glad to meet you all and look forward to both supporting you and being supported.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
