Older Candidate With Concerns

Recommended Posts

Hi - Have just begun the process leading to surgery. Bloodwork done; Nutrition Appmnt next week; Psychologist appointment in approximately 3 weeks and then -------Who knows for sure? What I do know is that I need to do something soon to help myself get some control over my eating habits after over forty of my 62 years being spent going up and down in weight and feeling like such a failure.

Have been reading as much as I can to try to understand just what I might be getting myself into but don't see too much out there written by people in their sixties who have taken the lapband plunge. I want to be excited and positive about it but would really like to hear from "baby-boomers" who are currently living with the band (positive or negative comments)and am really interested in hearing from some who have had the band for quite awhile and have reached a satisfying weight and been able to maintain. Can anyone out there help me?

I am a baby boomer. I have only had my band since 7/1/08 but I would do it again in a heartbeat. I am 63, absolutely no problems with the surgery, and I am going to get my first fill Monday, 7/28. I had catarac surgery on 7/16, no problems with that either. Going to get other eye done on 7/30. My band dr was all for it.

I was 61 when I began the process.......I was certain I'd be turned down because of heart problems, stents, bp, diabetes, arhtritis, etc etc.......but I was accepted. I had surgery at 62 with a BMI of 62....not a good state to be in. My surgery was a real non-event...no problems at all, not even a gas pain. Eighteen months later, at age 63, my BMI was 34.....and I feel my age to be 34. I'm off all meds and I feel wonderful. If I had not had surgery, I feel sure I would be dead or in a nursing home.....as it is, I feel I'm living my life in reverse - I feel younger, thinner, healthier, happier, stronger, and, even a my age, a whole lot cuter!!

Arizona Grandma here. I had the surgery on June 30th. It took a while longer to get over the surgery than when I was younger but everything turned out ok, with the exception of one incision that lost a stich and is just healing up. I'm scheduled for my first fill on August 6th. I've lost about 15 pounds, but the inches are going even though the pounds are not. So far, so good! Good Luck to you!

Thanks so much to all of you who responded. Am trying to absorb it all like a sponge -- but, hopefully, not the kind that retains water! I just might contact those who offered to answer additional question. Thaks again -- I'll keep checking for other replies.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
