Ok so for as long as I've had cramps, I've taken advil for them. What does everyone do about meds for cramps if we can't take an anti-inflammatory? Would it be ok to take an advil every once in a while? I am miserable and tylenol is a joke! Please help!

Recently I went to a seminar with a friend who is getting banded through Kaiser. The reason for Advil being so bad is it can cause ulcers in the lower stomach pouch. That being said, he did say if you take it here and there it will not kill you. I would think the first and second day of your period when the cramps are really bad it wouldn't hurt. I would definitely not take that much though. Good luck.

while not advised I posed the same question to my dr...she said that if you MUST take advil type products then take the liquid form (children's type w.lots of water) so the tablets are not sitting in your pouch. She also mentioned that she had to hospitalize a patient who developed a bleeding ulcer from taking high dose ibuprofen for an injury. so there is your warning and please ask your dr first.

I am only 2 weeks out and I have a reoccurring pinched nerve in my back that causes my right thigh to go numb and burn (this time from walking bent over the first couple of days after surgery). I took my Flexeril (prescription nsaid) into my surgeon's on my 1 week follow up and asked if I could take it. He looked at the SIZE of the pill, said if it was a small amount it was ok - but not to take it regularly. He didn't want some big honkin pill sitting in the top of my pouch that was an NSAID. I would call your Dr.s office to make sure - since all Dr.s are so different. Let us know what they say.

My doctor said Advil can eat right through the band.

I'd just take the Advil (I use Motrin myself). Take it with a warm liquid so it gets washed down into your stomach and doesn't sit in your pouch, or use the liquid kind.

My doc says it's fine. Ulcers and other problems occur if you are taking large doses or daily for an extended period of time. That can happen whether or not you have the band. But a couple days a month for your period shouldn't be a problem. disclaimer: ultimately, one should follow the advice of one's own doctor

My first period after my surgery is the pitts! I have never had such bad cramps in my life! I was so miserable, I just took my liquid tylenol with codiene. (leftover from surgery). I slept like a baby. I usually take advil, but I didn't think I should take it after having my surgery. I had a pretty heavy flow / unpredictable timing & mega cramps the first 4 months after surgery. My Doc said it was mostly a shock to my system - the surgery / change in hormones. No NSAIDs I was told but if in a lot of pain, to do the childrens motrin - it worked so/so...Get a heating pad, that helps too!!

I took children's ibuprofen for the first few days of my period when the cramps were really bad -- I agree that acetaminophen just doesn't cut it in those situations.

I've had a lot of success with liquid Tylenol ("Rapid Blast"), even though standard/pill Tylenol never did crap for me, even if I took 3 of them. The liquid seems to be much more effective, and much quicker.

minpinmom - I was rear-ended in January and received prescription muscle relaxers as well as injection. I'm pretty sure there was a liquid version of flexiril that they gave me along with the liquid lortab. If you're interested, I can check through my bottles and see if I can find it/and or the name. In fact, I know I had a relaxer, and I know I didn't have to crush or chew anything.

how does that liquid Tylenol taste? i have a bottle of it but am chicken to even try it ... :biggrin:

I have the cherry flavor (it also comes in "Warm Vanilla", maybe only the liquid Tyleon PM tho, I'm not sure... but that flavor makes me want to gag). Personally - the cherry isn't great, but I don't think it's gross either. I'm pretty used to it by now. It's better than the liquid lortab was.

I'm pretty sensitive to tastes. Things like Ny-Quil will literally make me shiver they're so nasty. But the cherry Rapid Blast is fine.

DH on the other hand, cringes if I tell him to take it. He says it's the nastiest thing.
