O.K. something I just thought about (haven't been banded yet). When you have surgery.. are you completely naked or can you have your underwear on? I know it's a weird question but it helps to know "what to expect".

Iwas completely naked, for my lab band as well as for 2 other outpatient surgeries I had (D&C and gall bladder). I had 2 gowns on, one opening in the back and the other in the front, but no clothes on underneath.

Hi Chloemom,

For the band surgery as well as any other surgeries I've had, they required me to be completely naked (no underwear) underneath the gown. Not sure exactly why, but I'm guessing it's so that they can make sure they can easily detect and address any bleeding or problems in all areas of the body.

Good point.. I didn't think of that.

You will be naked under the gown and I had two gowns as well. They'll drape you with surgical drapes around the area they'll work on after you're sleeping.

I had lots of that orange colored betadine on my belly when I woke up. Before I went home, the nurse gave me wet wipes to clean it off, other wise it might stain your clothes.

That is so funny you ask that. The night before surgery my husband who works in surgery, I work in labor and delivery. So. both in the medical field, so I know the answer. I asked him am I going to be able to wear my underwear? HE SAYS THATS IT CANCEL THE SURGERY IF THAT IS WHAT YOURE SO WORRIED ABOUT. Needless to say I didnt and I was naked under my gown.

I had to strip in the waiting area and walk naked to th OR and climb up on the table butt naked while everyone laughed.:blushing:h just kiddding.

lol I haven't gotten banded yet...I haven even thought about that, I'm so afraid of getting put to sleep.

I was banded 1/8, and was allowed to wear underwear. Also, the getting put to sleep was the BEST part. I don't think I have ever slept that good!

eigna-I'm worried about that too. I had a panic wave come over me yesterday. What if I die in surgery? I'm trying so hard not to "go there".

Tracy- I'm thinking about telling the docs I won't wear granny panties (that go up to there) if they will let me wear underwear. Don't know why this is an issue with me. How long was your surgery?, When did you go home?

Benson, I work in labor and delivery too. And even though I knew the answer, I still asked if I could wear my undies. Nope.

I wore a hospital gown open in the back in to the OR, with nothing underneath. Once I was out, they removed the gown, and draped me with sterile drapes, where the only area "showing" was the abdominal area....most of the work was done with the surgeon looking into the scope attachments...being it was laproscopic surgery.

When I woke up in recovery, I had on a hospital gown again.

I was always told when you check into a hospital to check your modesty at the door and pick it up again on your way out!

But don't worry, there have been multiple threads through the time I have been here on this subject, you are not the only one to worry about it!

The occasional patient who happens to be on her period during surgery, is usually given a hospital style pad to lay between her legs for the surgery, and it is not uncommon for that to happen, since we tend to alter our cycles during times of stress, and surgery is stressful! Point being, even then they do not leave you clothed in any way.

We all survived it~~you will too~~ it IS worth it!

Strangely, they told me that as long as it was cotton, I could leave my underwear on. Oh, and to not wear good ones because of all the betadine.

Weird, I've NEVER been allowed into any surgery wearing anything at all (apart from the gown of course) - even for stuff like a pin in my hand!

And I have had surgery whilst I had my period, and they give you a pad as big as a loaf of bread and those lovely mesh undies that you get after you've had a baby (to make sure you dont have any MORE babies too soon I suspect, they're very unattractive).

my surgery lasted 2 hours, the doc said it should only take 45 minutes but I had a hiatial hurnia repaired at the same time. Was in the hospital for 1 night post-op, then got on an airplane and went home the next day! I would do it again in a heartbeat!!

The visual of this brought tears to my eyes. In my mind I'm picturing you doing so with a "you want me, baby? You want this? You KNOW you do!" look of confidence on your face.

I know, I know... I've got to get out more... but it sure made me laugh! Thanks!

I just want to say thanks to all of you. I started reading this thread and by the end of it I couldn't stop laughing. :lol:I hadn't thought of the "no undies" issue yet, my banding is scheduled for 2/15. I'm sure it would have come up sooner or later though. I too am worried about being put under for the surgery but know I'll be okay. :regular_smile:
