Hi, I've heard of it too and it wasn't an option for me where I'm at. I think the band is prefered over the sleeve in general

My surgeon told me (in discussing my acid reflux) that the Lap Band may make it worse--and if it did, his only alternative would be the gastric sleeve. Luckily, I've had NO acid reflux since getting my Band--but this sleeve doesn't seem like an option generally offered--all we hear about is gastric bypass and the Band. :rolleyes2:

My acid reflux was totally resolved by my lap band. I suffered for years.

My acid reflux was probably caused by my hiatal hernia which was fixed the same time as the lap band surgery. I haven't had any acid reflux since.:rolleyes2:

Because the Sleeve is so new, there is no long term studies on it.

I have heard positive and negative on the sleeve.

Positive: no fills, immediate restriction, no PBs unless you really push it.

Negative: you can go septic and die. It stretches out over time just like the bypass. I think you still get dumping syndrom but I'm not sure.

This is why you need to research it yourself.

There is no dumping,

No Pbing at all,

You cannot 'go septic and die',

it does not stretch over time just like the bypass.

There have been no long term studies to show that you can stretch the stomach, although I am sure if you dont stop eating you will put weight on... just like the band, the bypass, the balloon etc...

Is there a reason you are pushing the sleeve? It's been around quite a while. Many insurances don't cover it. There are possible problems with it. There are with anything that requires surgery and modifies the body, especially when that surgery is performed on morbidly obese people.

Yep, I have been hearing about the sleeve for quite a while too. You just won't find much here about it as this forum is specifically a lapband support forum.

My insurance doesn't cover the sleeve, so it's not really an option I've considered (I did do some research on it, when I heard about another forum member trying it out).

I'm pretty sure it's been around awhile.

I just went to the surgeon today for the first time. Spent a lot of time here researching the lap band so I was surprised to hear him tell me about the sleeve. The advantages of the vertical sleeve is that they remove the stretchy part of the stomach which sends out the grehlin signal which tells you you are hungry. Your stomach becomes a long restrictive tube. It is a much simpler procedure than the bypass. It is purely a restrictive (not a malabsorptive procedure). the surgeon prefers it to the band HOWEVER, ONLY OXFORD HEALTH INSURANCE COVERS IT. For self pay people it is more expensive than the band. But there are no fills, no slippage, no sweet spot issues. Now beginning to research it in earnest, but there are fewer people out there for this. Am going to check out the support site above.

Hastings I'm not pushing the Sleeve in any way, I was answering the first post regarding the sleeve. this forum might be for the band, but this thread is about the sleeve, I hope that doesnt offend ya! Why does it seem that when lap banders hear about another kind of surgery, they seem to get all defensive and dont want to hear about it?? there are not many forums for sleevers, and that is why sleevers come here!!

If you dont want to hear about a surgery that may be better than the band in someone elses opinions, then dont go into a thread called

'something new - Gastric Sleeve' Yes thanks Hastings, you need to go do some research yourself if you want to comment on a surgery you know nothing about. And yes I have been sleeved for over 4 months.

And just to add to that last post, I also had a lap band in for 3 and a half years, it was the worst three years of my life, I ended up extremely unhealthy, lacking in vital nutrition and was vomiting blood on a daily basis. They took the band of death out of me and then sleeved me three months later, I havent vomited once since being sleeved, I live on a very healthy and balanced diet, I dont have to be ruled by a peice of plastic, what can I eat today, what cant I eat today etc...

I can now eat a healthy salad, that most banders cant eat without having painful Bping and it getting 'stuck'.

I am not totally against the band though, I have some dear freinds that are banders, and they dont regret it, and it has somewhat helped them.

Your post to me Hastings made me feel like utter crap. If you were aiming to make me feel unwelcome here as I am a sleever, then you have succeeded.

Carol, I don't think anyone was trying to make you feel unwelcome. I'm sorry you feel that way, I'd like to hear about your sleeve experience if for no other reason then my own information.

It's sometimes hard to type things in the correct "tone". I'm sorry if you got offended. I hope you continue to share your experience with us.
