Mobility and recovery tips when starting at a higher BMI?

"I’m 488 lbs and nervous about the first few weeks post-op. For those who were at a higher BMI during surgery, how did you handle the initial recovery? Any tips on staying mobile and managing the 'gas pain' or incision care when you have more weight on your midsection? I want to get out of bed and start my new life as fast as possible

This is a new start to a new life. You have a lot of changes coming. Don't try and rush things. It takes as long as your body needs. Ok sermon over. I had 3 strikes against me, high BMI, disabled

Walk, walk, walk. Short distances (like laps around your house to begin) often. Start the day after your surgery. It ‘s the best thing to get rid of surgical gas. It is in your abdomen and rises up behind the lungs where it causes the shoulder pain you may feel. It moves into your lungs and you breathe it out. Marching on the spot, lifting/pumping your arms up & down also helps. Get up & down slowly so you don’t strain your wound sites and the tender abdominal muscles. Some people say they find a binder helpful. Some say they struggle to get in & out of bed and slept in a recliner initially but this is all individual so it might not apply to you.

Sure some who started at a higher weight will share more tips.

All the best.

I had 3 strikes against me, high BMI, disabled and old. It took me six months until I could begin walking outdoors again. My weight had put a massive strain on my heart and lungs. Six months later I was feeling a new woman but still had a long way to go. Another twelve months down the line and I was where I wanted to be.

I had dreams but didn't dare dream too far. I do not believe my life now. Have patience, your dreams are coming to you.
