Hi everyone! I am new here, thanks for having me :) I had gastric sleeve surgery on 7.2.25

I was just curious, does anyone experience extreme dry mouth in the mornings when they wake up? I assume its from consuming less liquids, but it is so frustrating to wake up with cotton mouth from hell. I have never experienced this until after surgery. Being 6 weeks out, I just now am getting up to my 64 oz of fluid and will increase as I can. Any suggestions?

I don't know if I got it from surgery, but some meds will give me dry mouth. In addition to drinking more fluids, dry mouth toothpaste, dry mouth lozenges, and dry mouth spray help somewhat. When I'm having issues with it, I even keep a bottle of dry mouth spray on my nightstand next to my bed.

Oh the (Egyptian) mummy mouth is awful. Mouth drier than the Sahara desert & it can be like you can’t even close your mouth. Biotene (dry mouth moisturising spray) can help. I used to hold a mouthful of water in my mouth for a few seconds.

Post surgery it can occur because you don’t have as much flesh around your neck so your mouth drops open while you sleep causing your mouth to dry out. In time your muscles strengthen again (instead of relying on your fleshy neck to keep your mouth closed) & it reduces in frequency. It also is a symptom of perimenopause and menopause that isn’t often spoken about. ☹️

I didn't realise this ! Since having ovaries removed last year my menopause has re started and I am on the patches again. I have the dry mouth occasionally when I wake, its vile, and a little scary for a second. I did have it the early weeks after surgery because of the fluid intake.

Thank you everyone for your responses! I truly hope I'm not peri-menopausal as I'm only 29 😭 BUT definitely a great thing to look out for. So glad I found this forum!
